Winning Is Everything And The Only Thing …..So Can Someone Explain That To The Chicago Cubs ?

In the quaint old world of sports we all understand that the game itself has its foibles , history but above we’re led to believe its honesty, dignity and integrity.

And the venerable Vince Lombardi , a man known for his honesty and integrity but more so for his success and anecdotes. He states the following ……”Winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”

Lou Piniella is formally introduced as the Chicago Cubs' manager. Assisting him in putting on the team jersey is the GM Jim Hendry. Piniella took over the position from the fired Dusty Baker . He assumed those responsibilities on October of 2006. He signed a three year conract for $10m with a 1 year option extra as an incentive. picture appears courtesy of upi/photo/ Brian Kersey .....................

So it’d explain a great deal at present with regard to the plight of the Chicago Cubs and their woes over the last century plus. And the fact that they’ve continued to be mired in the depths of ineptitude. Furthermore the fans have had to endure these debacles without much recourse. When on the outside looking in would say it’s the Cubs’ fans undying loyalty and willingness to accept the futility that they’re prepared to endure such pain.’ Personally , I feel it’s all a bunch of hog-wash and it lies with the fact that neither the Cubs’ management or ownership aren’t prepared to be ambitious and do what it takes to place a winning product on the field of play !

Hearing on Cubs sale set for Sept. 24

Associated Press

WILMINGTON, Del. — A Delaware bankruptcy judge on Monday approved Tribune Co.’s request for quick court action on the company’s planned sale of the Chicago Cubs.

The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, has agreed to buy a 95 percent stake in the team and its Wrigley Field home for $845 million, but the deal must be approved by the bankruptcy court, as well as Major League Baseball.

Judge Kevin Carey approved Tribune attorneys’ proposals regarding notification to interested parties, including creditors of both the Tribune and the Cubs.

The process approved by the judge calls for any objections to be filed by Sept. 17, followed by a Sept. 24 court hearing on Tribune’s motion for court approval of the deal. Carey also approved break-up fees ranging from $5 million to $20 million to be paid if it falls through.

The plan filed by Tribune attorneys calls for a separate bankruptcy filing by Chicago National League Ball Club, a Tribune affiliate that is not involved in the company’s Chapter 11 case. That filing would come after Carey approves the sale as part of Tribune’s bankruptcy reorganization and escrow financing documents are in place.

Milton Bradley is formally introduced as a Chicago Cubs’ player. Listen carefully, as the player waxes on lyrically about his emotions with regard to the team. My, how times have changed ?

And even though the franchise, having been sold by real estate mogul and developer Sam Zell to Tom Ricketts and the immediate members of his family. Tom Ricketts is one the founders of the online investment firm TD Ameritrade . The final selling price was said to be $845 million . Somewhat of an overly inflated price but clearly what Zell was after- considering that he’d placed the Cubs’ parent company -The Tribune Group into bankruptcy proceedings. And whilst MLB haven’t been all that forthcoming as to the ongoing situation. We’re led to believe that Commissioner Bud Selig and MLB Chief Executive Officer Bob DuPuy were said to be closely monitoring the proceedings. This, I for one find to be totally preposterous. Considering the duo were about as cognizant of the issues with regard to the the steroid issue and its ramifications for the game as a blind man would be in the desert. You know it’s hot but you’re not prepared to do anything to safeguard yourself. Much as in the same they’ve both mishandled the issue. Albeit, that they’re now crediting themselves with what they believe to be the unparalleled success of the game’s steroid program.

In light of what has gone on with regard to Cubs . Isn’t it somewhat strange that a public comment hadn’t been forthcoming from the commissioner’s office or for that matter from anyone within the game’s hierarchy ? But then to MLB … silence is golden . Until there are serious ramifications for the health and financial well being of the game. But even then , they’ve failed to act appropriately and with due diligence. It is to be expected from an organization that has been as transparent as the members of Opus Dei . There’s a lot that they’d have us all believe divine as to their being. But there’s so much more that’s held from the prying eyes of the public. Much like the inner workings of the hierarchy of MLB

Cubs suspend Milton Bradley for rest of season

By R B Fallstrom AP Sports Writer

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Milton Bradley’s(notes) season is finished. Perhaps his days with the Chicago Cubs are, too.

The Cubs suspended their volatile outfielder for the rest of the season Sunday, one day after he criticized the team in a newspaper interview.

Bradley was disciplined for conduct detrimental to the team. General manager Jim Hendry said he decided to send Bradley home after learning of the player’s remarks in the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald of Illinois. Bradley, scratched from Saturday’s lineup with a sore left knee, was quoted as saying “you understand why they haven’t won in 100 years here.”

Bradley has two years remaining on a three-year, $30 million contract that he signed as a free agent last offseason. Hendry said he doesn’t know if the relationship can be salvaged.

“The last few days became too much for me to tolerate,” Hendry said. “I just decided late last night that’s what I was going to do, and I didn’t give it a lot of thought what’s going to transpire moving forward.”

Cubs manager Lou Piniella agreed with Hendry’s move.

“Jim made the decision and I support it,” the manager said. “I really do.”

Chicago signed the switch-hitting Bradley to provide balance in the lineup, but he struggled throughout his first season with Chicago, batting .257 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs. He was booed vigorously by home fans at Wrigley Field.

And if you thought that the present situation for the Cubs couldn’t at all get any worse. You’d be entirely wrong . As the team has taken the unusual step of suspending their outfielder Milton Bradley until the end of the season. The reason behind the suspension are for the statements made to the press with regard to the Cubs’ organization by the player. The Cubs for their part see Bradley’s actions as conduct detrimental to the sport and to the organization. Both GM Jim Hendry and the team’s coach , Lou Piniella are in complete agreement with the course of action taken.

And for the Chicago Cubs as a team who’ve underperformed throughout the entire season. Theirs is a situation that if anything , is viewed as irreparable. Piniella now seems to be out of his depth and unable to communicate with his players. Hendry as the team’s GM has been about as useful to the organization as a three legged horse trying to run an obstacle course. He’s fallen so many times that it has become laughable. Personnel decisions made under his tenure have proven to be disastrous, more often ,than not. And as a duo , Hendry and Piniella would make for some very fine comic relief.
It remains to be seen upon finalization of the sale of the franchise , whether not both the general manager and manager will be asked to remain with the organization.
If they’ve not been able to lead the team win anything of merit . Then in reality there’s no reason at all for them to remain with the Cubs’ organization.

The Chicago Cubs (76-72) remain 10 games behind the NL Central Division leading St Louis Cardinals (87-63) . As the season now winds down , it has to be said that for all sense and purpose the season just can’t end quick enough for the Cubs and their long suffering fans. They’ve been asked to endure far too much and more than any one fan can be asked to bear. And even though there are second , third and fourth generations of fans that still show their unwavering support to the organization. One has to ask the question ….’how much more are they all willing to bear’ ?

Bradley’s future with the club remains bleak and it’s enough of a suggestion to believe that the player won’t be back with the club for the 2010-11 season. And it wouldn’t be at all out of the question to suggest that the player’s professional career within baseball has reached its climax. One hardly feels that there’s still a major league team that’s willing to want the player- with the all the baggage that he’ll apparently bring with him. A worse case scenario, would be to see the volatile Bradley implode once again and seemingly bring down an organization with him. Best case scenario , he once again becomes a productive player and contributes to an organization. One of those is preferable but in actuality I’m inclined to believe that he won’t be around to contribute to a team. It’s as plain and simple as that !

For the Chicago Cubs and their long suffering fans. One empathizes with them. But at the same time how must they feel seeing the likes of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays all making it to a World Series . Two of those organizations winning the game’s most prestigious prize. But bear this mind, all three in question have been around a lot less longer than the Chicago Cubs, in terms of their tenure within the game of baseball. And it has been over 100 years since the Chicago Cubs won the last of their two World Series championships. And it could well be another century before they’re liable to achieve the feat again.

So what say you as to the impending fate of the Chicago Cubs ? The game’s lovable losers seemingly can’t win but for losing. It’s not been within their DNA for years ! Winning that is .

PTI Inquiring Minds Need To Know

Unless I’m mistaken but have the Los Angeles Dodgers (83-58) suddenly forgotten how to play baseball ? Merely a little over a month ago this team had a 7 game lead on their nearest rivals within NL West, within the division . And they almost certainly had the best record in baseball. And now all of a sudden they’ve become about as welcoming a sight as the President is,to those who oppose his health-care reform package. Well, that’s in terms of their competitiveness of on the field of play. Which at this moment in time can be best described as being lackluster.

Seemingly now the Dodgers have the Colorado Rockies (81-60) breathing down their necks. And those within the Dodgers’ organization and their fans would have you believe that they’re not overly concerned with the situation. Unless I’m mistaken anyone within the Dodgers’ shoes ought to have a great deal to worry about at this juncture. It’s not as if their play of late has reflected a team playing with a great deal of confidence to begin with. At the same time the Rockies have merely thought “….. what the hell , let’s give it a go and see where things take us ?” And if that’s not enough of a warning for the Dodgers . When one considers that this team has performed underperformed in their last ten games , going (5-5)against that of the Rockies’ impressive 9-1 . One can well understand why it is that all of a sudden the impression of the Rockies creeping up and then perhaps supplanting the Dodgers atop of the NL West isn’t as outrageous as it’d first appear.

Dodgers’ fans be afraid , be very, very afraid . Because should your season go up in flames as to your aspirations of the winning the division. And then for your team not to regain its composure and then contend in the playoffs. Be prepared to become the butt of so many jokes across MLB . Perhaps even more so, than for the likes of the Mets, Cubs , Pirates , Nationals and Royals’ fans.

The Dodgers’ struggles haven’t just been at the plate but their once stellar pitching has all of a sudden become pedantic. For the moment we can but only take the wait and see attitude as to the team’s plight. As to the excuses that may well be forthcoming from their fans . Well, who knows what they might be should things not fare well at all ?

So it’d appear that all of a sudden , the now under siege commissioner of the NFL , Roger Goodell , thinks it prudent to hire former NFL coach and analyst, John Madden as a special counsel ? Madden will provide, it’s been assumed – Goodell, with much needed advice as to issues that the league now faces. As well as meeting with the general managers around the league to discuss various problems they no doubt feel pertinent. The former coach will also keep the commissioner up to date with weekly calls .

Granted , on the face of it this seems like a wise move. But with the ensuing upcoming round of meetings that will no doubt be taking place between the league and the NFLPA and its senior representative , DeMaurice Smith. These meetings are bound to be very contentious as the two sides invariably discuss the renegotiating of the collective bargaining agreement. One has to remember that the NFL chose to opt out of this – much to the dismay of Smith. And the league takes the standpoint , that in light of the change in the economic environment - changes had to be made. However, one has to also remember that this agreement wasn’t set to become void until the end of the 2010-11 season.

Madden to serve as special adviser to Goodell

NEW YORK (AP)—Hall of Fame coach John Madden will serve as a special adviser to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The league said Thursday that as part of his unpaid position Madden will chair the coaches group in the competition committee. Madden will also participate in meetings of a general managers committee and be part of a weekly call with Goodell or another NFL official to discuss issues from the previous week’s games.

Madden retired from broadcasting in April. He says the new role allows him to stay active in football. Goodell says that when Madden suggested helping out, “it was an offer we couldn’t refuse.”

______________________________________________________

Wise , aged and presumably viewed as something of a sage when it comes to the NFL and the game itself. I personally, can’t envision Madden being something of an enforcer . Much less, a Mafia consigliere in the mould of a ‘Tom Hayden’ , or that of Al Capone’s enforcer Frank Nitti. Madden may well bring with him a great deal of respect to the table. But in all honesty , if anything he’s more now known as a celebrity and NFL analyst.
Albeit , that as an endorser of EA Sports’ Madden NFL 10 . The game which bears his name and which has made him immeasurably wealthy. We can only surmise that Madden clearly believes that he still feels he has a role to play within the NFL. As to the pretense that he can work with the likes of Goodell and provide him with sound advice , heed the thoughts of the owners and GM’s alike. It could very well happen, but I, for one, seriously doubt it ! Madden may well have an instinctive mind and his analysis and commentary of the game can at times , be insightful. One doubts that when it comes to the business aspect of the NFL’s workings, he can provide Goodell with anything worthwhile.

The game has changed immensely since Madden stepped away from it as a coach. And while the players and their attitudes have invariably become more business like. And there’s also now more of a ‘me’ mentality as to their persona , for many of them . Whatever Madden and Goodell hope to achieve had better be tempered about as what’s perceived to be best for the game and that of its most loyal fans. Issues asides, can we actually now expect Madden to proclaim there to be a ‘Brett Favre Day’ within the NFL , anytime soon ? I mean after-all he’s been the biggest Favre supporter of them all , throughout the years. His wanderlust for the player has never been abated. And now with Favre’s return to the NFL , one might wonder whether or not he returned to that inner sanctum in order to be closer to his hero ?

What is it now with social networking and everyone wanting to Twitter ? I mean, you know things have got to be bad when the likes of Paris Hilton , Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs feels it necessary to let you know how their day is said to be going. Where’s the rhyme and reason behind it all ? Is there no longer the need to hold a conversation with a person face to face ? But perhaps , it’s just me !

Well Allen Iverson has let it be known that he’s finally found a place where he’ll be domiciled professionally. The player ‘tweeted’ that he’d be joining the Memphis Grizzlies. Laugh if you must , but at least it’s not the Los Angeles Clippers. All fooling asides, it’s sad to see a player of Iverson’s undoubted talents fall so far in such a short space of time. But the player has signed a one year deal with the team in the hope of leading them to some semblance of success. And for a team that’s never been in contention for anything within the NBA , other than being steeped in the depths of mediocrity. It’s hoped that in some way he can fulfill those aspirations for the franchise and its fans.

I’ve longed maintained that some athletes tend to remain in the game far too long. Even when their skills are on the decline and they can no longer contribute to a team. And that becomes even more glaring when an athlete performs as an individual within the sporting arena. We’ve seen it with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya , Joe Namath and most certainly Brett Favre ! But you’d be hard pressed to tell even Favre’s most erstwhile fans that. Many of whom believe, that he’ll be able to work miracles there in Minnesota , with the Vikings.

As to Allen Iverson , he may well be able to change some of the thought process there within the franchise. But it’s clear that this is just being done as a maneuver to lure Grizzlies’ fans within the Fedex Forum their home arena, in Memphis. Of late it has been sparsely attended for NBA league games. And with Iverson within their midst , it’s hoped by the franchise’s owner Michael Heisley , GM Chris Wallace and team coach , Lionel Hollins that the player can bring some luster back to the franchise. And as to the form that the luster might take, is anyone skeptical as to its apparent form ?

So please pardon the interruption as this inquiring mind needed to know what your thoughts might be on this particular subject matter ? Any answers at this juncture ?

We Didn’t Give Up On The Season The Season Gave Up On Us ………….

Pick your poison ? Is it better to be insulted by ownership or by the management of a professional sports franchise ? That’s the question that the Tampa Bay Rays’ fans have to be asking themselves right about now.

From left to right , Carlos Pena , Gable Kapler and Ben Zobrist celebrate the team's 11-7 triumph over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit , Michigan on Monday. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Nate Burleson ...................

Here’s a team that sits in the midst of a wild-card playoff mix. And in essence their ownership has basically given up on the season. The Rays at (71-59) sit some 5 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox within the AL East division. The division leading New York Yankees (83-48) are a further 11 1/2 games ahead of the third placed Rays. So , effectively the Rays are in effect playing for a wild-card berth and not much else beyond that at this juncture.

That being said , in the midst of this all the Rays, its ownership and their remote but loyal band of followers , have to be asking themselves. How differently might things have turned out had this team played with a great deal more resolve ? They have in effect been somewhat complacent as to their play. So much so , that the fans , as well as management and ownership included, may have felt that all they had to do, was to turn up at the start of the regular season.

Rays' Matthew Silverman(left) a partner in the ownership group alongside GM Andrew Friedman (center) and senior managing partner and majority stake-holder Stuart Sternberg (right) . picture appears courtesy of nytimes/ Phillip Diedrich .......................

Granted , their unexpected win of the division, the AL pennant and then their appearance in the World Series. Which culminated in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies . It led to a great deal of exposure for the team and its young cadre of players. That being said that sense self importance may well have gone to their heads far too quickly than their manager, Joe Maddon, may well have wanted. His mastery of cajoling and fostering team spirit led to exemplary and exceptional play from a number of members on this team. That being said , when complacency sets in , bad habits tend not to be too far behind. And that has been definitely the case with this Rays’ team this season !

The Rays' Evan Longoria rounds the bases past the Detroit Tigers' Ramon Santiago after hitting a two run home run during the fourth innings of their game at Comerica Park , in Detroit Michigan on Sunday. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Duane Burleson ........................

Now , in the midst of the a three horse race for the wild-card berth in the American League. The Tampa Bay Rays now find themselves up against a rock and a hard place. And now comes the even more daunting task, as they face off against the Boston Red Sox . In what might be their most important series of the season. Failure to make up ground on the Red Sox as well as the Texas Rangers (72-58) . And in effect, their season is all over , bar the shouting !

Pitching and timely hitting thereof, has been one of the major letdowns on the team. And when the offense has been on fire , it has been the pitching which has let them down. And when the pitching has been stellar , the bats all of a sudden has become all too silent. What might be even more scary is the bullpen , which many thought last year would be their achilles’ heel. In effect it, withstood the pressure and was one of their saving graces. This year that hasn’t been always been the case. It has fluctuated between being average and barely above that.

Granted , this season several of the team’s stars have performed above and beyond the call of duty. But at the same time a great deal more had been expected of some. As to whose fault this might’ve been is open to a great deal of debate and conjecture. What we do know is this, the team for all sense and purpose has regressed somewhat. Whether it was the high expectations placed upon them their fans and perhaps management and ownership as well. What we do know is that the team was found wanting in a number of areas. Roster-wise this team can measure up against the elite of the MLB teams within the game. But somehow , they can never seem to orchestrate the consistency needed to win multiple games and even more earnestly multiple series. If they were able to do that with even greater consistency. Then the Tampa Bay Rays wouldn’t now find themselves on the outside looking in, with the regard to the potential playoff scenario as it now stands.

Carlos Pena of the Rays hits a two run home run against the Tigers. The Tampa Bay Rays would go on to defeat the Tigers 11-7 . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Duane Burleson ..................

What , I for one find more surprising with this team is the lack of a true leader, on it. Not only terms of their being a vocal leader but also one, who leads by example. Certainly that hasn’t been forthcoming from Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford , or even a seasoned veteran such as Pat Burrell. And though it’s often said that a team tends to reflect the persona of its coach or manager , as the case may be. It could well preclude to the fact that it’s left to Joe Maddon to communicate what’s needed on the field of play at any given moment. If that is indeed the case. Then Maddon, being too laconic may well be the real problem. He’s a man of few words in terms of his needs from the players. He’s certainly not as rambunctious as his predecessor , Lou Piniella . But then again , Piniella has never been known to be a patient man to begin with.

Maddon said and did all the right things that turned this team into winners. And he is to be off-course commended for that. As good as it was, a great deal more was expected out of this season. That being said, winning for the Rays as an organization hasn’t been ingrained as a template. Wherein, it becomes a thing of regularity. It’s still learning from the success of last year and that may well be the overall problem. But what’s now needed is for both the manager and team to raise the level of their intensity and not just rest on the laurels of last season.

This now leads me to my final point , insofar as the team is in the midst of a playoff scenario as to its ambitions. If they weren’t said to be giving up on the season . Then why indeed did they trade away their pitcher Scott Kazmir ? The player was traded to the Los Angeles Angels for three players to be named later. Call me naive’ , but at this juncture wouldn’t it have been better to retain the player until the season had ended ? When at least then we’d have known you gave it your best shot in trying to acquire a postseason berth. Instead, for all appearances it becomes apparent that in essence you’ve waved the white flag of retreat and basically surrendered your season. Fate as complicated as it can sometimes be. In essence it is what you make of it . Either you grasp it or you can essentially walk away. That on appearance seems to be what the organization has done with this maneuver.

Salary cap dumping , call it what you will. It’s now bringing back the type of maneuver one equates with that of the previous ownership of the Rays under the auspices of then,Vince Naimoli .
The Stuart Sternberg regime, as astute on the face of it , as they might appear to be. They can ill afford to fall out of the good graces of a select but small and loyal fan-base. It is one thing to try and allay their fears but it’s another to try and sell them a bill of goods . Which is essentially what the team GM , Andrew Friedman is saying when he states “… that the trade of Kazmir gives the team a chance to call up players whom we feel can contribute to a playoff run.” Isn’t that akin to saying that it’s our intention not to give up. But we’re going to try something new down the home stretch because we can’t see the finish line clear enough ahead of us.

I only call it like I see it ! So let me know what you think as to the Rays’ aspirations at this juncture ? It ought to make for a great topic of discussion , don’t you think ?

And  it  certainly  hasn’t   bode  well  for  the   game   domestically  that  its  hierarchy  has   been   about   as  proactive   in  dealing   with  many  of its  problems  about   as  much  as   the  Federal   government   has  been  in   dealing  with  the   current   economic   crisis.      The   game’s   most  prominent  star   domestically  is   under   a   cloud  of  suspicion   and   his   actions  as  of  late   have  been  deplorable.   And   now   comes   word   that  he’s   curtailed   his   availability  for  his   national side,  the  Dominican Republic.   What  makes   Alex  Rodriguez’s  actions   even  more   suspicious at    this   juncture is  his  every  move   thus   far   has   been  orchestrated   in order to  amass  degree  of sympathy   from  the  public.  Hip  injury  or  not  and  with   allegations   still  surrounding   and  his   steroid use.   Could  it  be that   this  might’ve  been   borne   out    of  his   of  the  illecit   substances  ?

As  to  the  event   itself  if  it   is   to  be   the   showcase  that   Major  League  Baseball  anticipates   and  that  of  the  game’s  international   governing   body.  Then   the   game’s   major   stars   who  are   representing  the   various   international   concerns  will  have  to  step  up  to  the  plate  and  make  sure   that  this  event  is   a  memorable  one   to  say  the  very  least.

The  event   itself  has  already  started  and  we’ve   already   witnessed  a  surprise   with  the  Netherlands  defeating  the  Dominican Republic 3-2.  They were  viewed  as  the  presumptive   favorites  to  win the  competition  outright.  But  then  again  the  US  team  was   also   viewed  as   a presumptive   favorite  at  the  Classic’s  inception.  And   we  can  all  remember  how  badly  the competition  went   for  the  team  can’t  we ?

The  United  States’  team  makes   its   formal  entry   today   with   a  game  against   Canada.   And  it’s being    viewed   with   a  great  deal  of   expectancy.   Its roster   is  filled   with a  litany  of    All  Stars  and  they’re  expected   to  overcome  the   play  of  the  northern   counterparts  with   some   ease.    But   as  we’ve   already   seen   anything   can    happen  and   will.  We’ve  already   had  a  number  of  players   saying  that    they’re  playing   with  and  for  the  pride  of  their   country” .  It’s   not  something   that   ought  to  be  undermined   but  in   reality   for  many  of  these  players  it’ll  be   the  only   opportunity  that  they’ll   ever   get  to   play   at  this  level   and  infront  of   a  viewership  on  this   grand   a  scale.

A Sport Can Only Be As Good As Its Players And The Leadership That’s Shown By Its Executives …………

A  Sport   Can  Only  Be    As   Good   As  Its  Players   And    The  Leadership   That’s  Shown   By  Its  Executives.

Much  like  a   profitable   company   is   viewed  as  a  viable  investment   opportunity  for  equity  investors.    The   same  can   be   said   for    professional   sports.   And   in  particular ,  baseball    and   the   fans   who  are  avid  followers  and   supporters  of  not  only  the   game   but  the   franchises as  well.  The  fans   are   much   like  that   of  an   investor   as  they’ve   a   vested  interest  in  seeing  the equity   maximize  its   profit  potential   exponentially .   However   of  late     the   share   price   of  baseball  were   it     a  share   price   on  the   New  York  Stock  Exchange  would   be  at  an  alltime  low.   Baseball’s   share   price  has   dropped   precipitously   low .  It’s  now   nothing  more  than a   penny  stock  at  present   and  is  not   about   to  rise  anytime  soon.

Unfortunately   for   baseball   at  present   it’s not   looking  as   worthy  an  investment  as   say   the   Big   Three  (Chrysler, Ford , GM) automotive   companies  or that  of   the   failing   banking   industry   on  Wall  Street.    About  the  only  thing  that    separates  these   entities  at  present.   Is  the  mere   fact  that  now    the   titans  of  those    two  particular  industries   have   finally  the  will   to   stand  up  and   admit  to  the  mistakes  that  they’ve   made.   Albeit   that   they’re  now   being   bailed   out  at  the   taxpayers’  expense.    But   then  again    the  automotive  industry    hasn’t   been  a  worthwhile    entity   in  well  over  a   decade !    However   the   game  of  baseball   hasn’t   the  leadership  or   presence   of   mind   to  even  admit   that  it   is  at   fault  in  any  way.

If   nothing   else   Commissioner   Bud  Selig   and  the  owners   have   shown    that  they   don’t   possess  a  backbone   or  the  willingness  to  stand  up  to  the  union.  If   anything   at  the   owners’  beckoning  and  acting   in   collusion  with   Donald  Fehr  of   the  Players’  Union   they’ve   seen   fit  to  defraud   the   public   and  the   fans  at  large.   And   we’re   meant to   believe  that   these   individuals   have   the    best   interests   of   the   game   in  their   mindset  ?   In  reality   nothing   could  be   further   from  the   truth.     Selig   couldn’t   spot   the   truth   if   it     were   written    in   5  foot  high   letters  and   place   atop  of   the   Time  Magazine  building  in  New  York City  for  the  world   to   see.    One  thing   is   now  becoming   abundantly   clear    is   that   Selig   lives   in  his  own  imaginary   world  of  make  belief.   And   each  of  the  characters   in  it  are   merely   those   from a  fairy   tale.     As   to  which    to   fable   that  might   be  ,  is   open  to    a  great    deal  of   debate.

Now  as   the  game  finds  itself   in  perhaps   the   most  unexpected  of    controversies  concerning  that  of   one  the  pre-eminent  players  in  the  game .  It   has  to   be   asked   is   there   nothing  a  shoe   awaiting   to  be  dropped   concerning  Alex  Rodriguez  or   any  other   player    who  might  well  be   on  the  infamous   list  of   104  names  ?    Rodriguez’s  admittance   that  he’d  used  steroids   for    three  years  whilst  playing   for  the  Texas  Rangers.   Though  it   has  to  be  said  the   veracity  of  the   argument   being   put   forward  by  the   player  himself    has   so  many  holes  in  it.  That  the  press  conference    convened   by  the  New  York  Yankees  was merely   nothing   more  than  a  charade.      Clearly   the  player  is   still  delusional  and   his   thinking  that   this   may   well   lead   to  a  dissipation   in  the  ongoing   interest  in the  matter.

You’re Either In Or You’re Out …………

Well it came to a parting of the ways.  Today after some consideration and a great deal of deliberating New York pitcher and a stalwart of their four consecutive World Series’ wins Andy Pettite wasn’t picked up by the team.  It shouldn’t come as a surprise  to anyone but it’d appear that the Yankees  and the organization are looking to start afresh.

Perhaps this, an indication of what co-team chairman  Hal Steinbrenner states that this is a fresh but new start for the organization as a whole.  Allow me some latitude here but  I’d like to look at this whole situation with a fresh set of  eyes.  But over the years  the organization has never met  a  high priced free  agent that they didn’t like. Let’s look  at some of those individuals  in particular.  Namely  Randy Johnson ,  Carl Pavano,  Jason Giambi, Aaron Boone and  Hideki Irabu.  Now that’s an array of  stars  who are  about  as  welcoming  and  cerebral  as one could ever wish to come across. About the only thing  relevant about these  players  were  the fact  that  a  Brinks’ truck  no doubt  would have  to  be backed up in order  for  them to  get  paid. And  paid  they were  , vast sums  for  reasons  too numerous  to mention. Except to say  that the  vaults of  the  Federal Bank of New York would  be rendered meaningless.

Hank and Al Steinbrenner Co-Chairmen of the New York Yankees.......

And whilst we know that the Yankees possess a vast array of  resources  which is unmatched by any other professional sport’s organization  in or outside  Major League Baseball. The YES Network is the cash cow that keeps on giving, giving and keeps on giving.  With the team moving into a spanking  new  edifice  that costs  in excess  of  $1.9bn at last  count.  Granted  Mayor  Michael  Bloomberg may well  have  played a part  in  making  that  figure so excessive. And  for a structure  that was  originally meant  to be  a privately financed  structure. It goes a long way in stating  that  Bloomberg  was  out  of  line  within his  inane rant as  to  the  Federal government in bailing  out the financial behemoths of  Wall Street. Then again it ought to  against the  grain considering  that the Yankees’ new home was publically financed and all of  this  was at  the behest  of the incumbent mayor.

Now as  much as one ought to appreciate  the contributions of Pettite  over  the years.  And considering that he along  with Derek Jeter , Mariano Rivera and  Jorge Posada  are  the only remnants  left  from those multi championship winning days. The franchise  has fallen somewhat on hard times in terms  of  their presence in the  postseason. Last year for the first time in fourteen years  was the  very first time  that they’d  missed the playoffs. And to say that it was viewed as a catastrophe would be an understatement.

Andy Pettite the now former Yankees who's turned down a $10m one year contract offer from his former team .......................

Andy Pettite the now former Yankee who's said to have turned down a $10m one year contract offer from the organization ................

Andy Pettite the now former New York Yankee who’s turned down a $10m one year contract offer  from the  team .   picture appears  courtesy of getty images/  Paul  Roberts …………………..

Pettite was offered a one year contract said  to be in the region of  $10m . Nothing to be sneezed at mind you. But it’d appear  that  Andy  thought it beneath him to accept what he  might’ve viewed as a derisory offer. In these  tough economic times $10m may well not be viewed  as a great deal of money to some. But  to those New York Yankees’ fans who are  spending  thousands of dollars  a year to pay  for tickets  as  well  as concessions and souvenirs.  That’s the sort of money  that  would take care  of  several families’  dreams  for life  and  beyond.

And while we ponder this latest of changes within the Yankees’ organization we ought to consider this.  In reality is the team any better off now with their newly gleaming  additions in the guise of  CC Sabbathia, A J Burnett  and Mark Teixeira ?  Chances  are  we’re likely to see an improvement of sorts.  But that’s not  the thing  that’s most  important to the franchise.  It’s about winning  and the winning of multiple World Series in particular. That’s what counts to the franchise and the business template that is in place.  Losing isn’t meant  to be an option  for the Steinbrenner family.  And when you see  Hank  Steinbrenner  wailing  on about the perceived  unfairness of the game  when  his team fails to make the playoffs because  they were others who did so  with a less than winning record. It oughtn’t not to pain us as to his whining.   After all  that’s what you tend to get  from a whining narcissistic individual with a verbose persona.

Pettite for all of his intentions is now on his way out of New York and whilst there’ll be some heartfelt wishes.  There’ll be some who think that the player has done himself and  the franchise a  great disservice  by refusing  the team’s offer. But it’s the player’s decision and he can either live with or he cannot. As to the Yankees and their ambitions for the upcoming season. It’s quite  clear that  they’re back in business and looking to win it all and no expense  will be spared.  Andy Pettite won’t be a part of the team’s strategy as this season beckons. But that’s not to say that the issue won’t be revisited  especially should the  team feel that the pitching isn’t  up  to standard. If there’s a choice to be made  between a player of his experience and  someone who knows the  ins and outs of  the  franchise. You can rest assured that more likely than not he may well  be  the  player  that  they’ll choose to turn to.  That’s if he’s not signed elsewhere  before  the  season starts.

So say what you will about the franchise  they may well be  turning their back on the past. But hey they’ve been known to turn back the hands of time if only for a moment and it brings to mind Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite. No chance that they’d have both back within their realm but quite possibly one for sure. Any thoughts on who  that  might be  ?

The upcoming baseball season ought to be one of  intrigue and suspense. If  nothing else we’ll see whether or not  the New  York Yankees can get back atop  of the pedestal where they and their  fans feel they rightfully belong.  We’ll  also see  if the Tampa Bay Rays can  remain amongst the contenders.  And as one would suppose a newly fledged member  of  what one would  deem  to be a contender, though yet  to  be  considered  a perennial contender. It will be interesting  to see what the year  ahead holds for the  team and its fans.    The New York Yankees  will always  be  considered contenders  merely because they  are the  Yankees.  And the fact  that everyone  wants  to see  them  back at  the  top.  Well  those of us  who  want  to see them back  there.

Spend Big Live Big And You Too Can Be Successful …Well That’s The Credo Lived By In Baseball ………………..

This cannot be the time for fans of baseball to think that the game is back to where it ought to be. With the New York Yankees simply announcing that they’re able to go out and spend in excess of $420m on three players.  The world is of the belief that all is right within the game. Nothing now could be further from the truth.

Whilst no one can complain of  this latest development it has to be said that the teams within the AL East may well be looking at this with some trepidation.  Well perhaps not the Boston Red Sox.  But most certainly the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles have to be  thinking to themselves what is it that they have to do in order to become competitive with the likes of high flying and big spending Yankees.  Neither of the teams in question possesses the sort of financial acumen that the likes of the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox have within their means.

At some time in the foreseeable future  the commissioner’s office  will  have to contemplate whether or  not it is  feasible  to consider a salary  cap within the game.  Albeit that this will present a dilemma for a number of teams.  Especially those with  the financial  wherewithal  of the  Red Sox and Yankees. Big  market  teams  being what  they  are  can  afford  to  spend lavishly  on players  whom they  feel  with  be of  benefit to  their  teams.  Unfortunately this is  not  the  case  for  the  majority of  the  teams  within  major league  baseball.  And it is  something  that  Bud Selig  and  the  team owners  certainly  have to face, despite  their  passionate  belief  that  the  game  is  in  a healthy state.

With revenues in excess  of  $6.5bn a year  it can be  said  that  the game  still isn’t  where  it ought  to be  when it  comes  to complete transparency  and  accountability  by  the  league  and  the  franchises themselves. And although  it is  a private entity  the hierarchy of the   game  itself  relies  heavily on the goodwill of  the public  and  the  communities within which it has a presence. But  if  this policy is to be  accepted  by all of  the  teams within  the  major leagues.  Then it has to be  done in such a way whereby it is  equitable  for  all.  It’s something  that  not  even  the  owners  can agree to  let  alone  the  commissioner’s  office.  For much of  his  tenure  Allan ’Bud’ Selig  has  been  nothing more  than a  mouth piece  for  the  owners  and  when  needed  most  to be assertive.  He  was  almost  as docile  as  a  church  mouse.   So  why  would  we  expect him  now  to be  assertive  ?  He  had  to  be  dragged  kicking and  screaming  into  the  twenty  first  century  when  addressing  the  steroid  issue  as  he  himself  appeared  to be oblivious  as to  what was  happening  around him.  It  was patently  obvious  what  was  happening  but  he  and his  minions  chose  to  ignore it .

He may well  feel that  when a team like the New York Yankees  can  go  out openly  and  spend  a  quarter of a billion  dollars  much  like a family spends on an entertaining evening   out.  We  may  well  think of it  as an evening’s entertainment for the  family.   But  for  the Yankees  it’s merely  nothing  more  than a day at  the  office. With the sort  of  financial  acumen  that’s  within  the realms of  the  Yankees  and  Red  Sox  is now  placing an even greater obstacle on the majority of  the  teams  within the  game.  They  in no way  can match  these  teams for  their financial muscle  or success.  Between  the two  they’ve won  six of  the last eleven   World Series .  And  as much  as  many  will  say  that  there’s  a  balance within the  game  more so  than any of  the  other  major  team sports.  One   would  also  say  that  when  it comes  to  the  financial  viability  of  their   teams.  Those  within   the game  of baseball  are in even more of  precarious  position than  that  of  their  counterparts  in  basketball,  football and perhaps  hockey.  The  latter  we  know  are still  trying  to create  a sound  business  structure  under  which  they  can  operate  with  some semblance  of  normalcy and success. There’s something  that  baseball can  learn from the  pratfalls  made  by the

NHL.

With these  uncertain  economic  times  it’ll  now  be  very interesting  to  see how many of the  teams  operate.  A  number of the  game’s  major  corporate sponsors  are  already  cutting  back on their  expenditure  and  exposure  within the  game.  And it’s  going to  become all too  apparent  as  to how  it’ll  end  up affecting many  of  the  teams  within the  game.  And  with  that’ll  come  the  uncertainty  of  the  fans  themselves  and  how  they  choose to  spend  their  discretionary  dollars.  If it comes to choosing  to feeding  their  families  and going to a game ?.  Then  the  family  will  win  hands down  each  and  every  time. Again that  is something  that the  league  will  most definitely  have  to  think  about for  the  foreseeable future.

The  signing  of  CC Sabathia , AJ Burnett may  well  have  made  everyone sit up and  take note  as to  how serious the New York Yankees  are about reacquiring  their position at the top of  the  food chain.  But  it  also  sets  about a  dangerous  precedence  about  the haves and have-nots  within the game. Their  signing of  Mark  Texieira  sets  about an  even  bigger  indication  as  to the direction that some are  able to  afford themselves  whilst  others  are  not.  They  say “‘all is  fair  in love  and  war ………”   But  it’d  appear  that  when it comes to  the  game  of professional  baseball all  semblance  of  common sense on the  part  of  the owners  as  well  as the  league and  players  themselves are  falling  on deaf  ears.  What they perceive as sound economic sense  and a guarantee as to  the aspirations  of success  is merely nothing  more  than  a  bold  face  charade  to lure  the fans through  the turnstiles. In order that their coffers  are  filled  and at the same time the cycle  of  greed and avarice  on  both sides  continues amongst  the players  and  league alike.  Whilst  the  fans and  consumers  alike  are  thrown up a  diluted and often mediocre  product  on the  field of play.
