Oh Yes Here Comes The Silly Season ……….. And It Includes NASCAR’s The Chase For The Cup , Shaq’s Asinine TV Show

Unless I’m mistaken , NASCAR’s regular season schedule has now come to a halt. And we now have the final-four postseason races for the 2009 season , that ends with the sport crowing its Sprint-Nextel Series’ Cup champion. And for all of the hoop-lah created by the sport and its fans. The tension that they’ve tried to build up has been about as suspenseful as being read the story of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. And while I don’t doubt the immense popularity of the sport across the country and seemingly across various demographics. It’s easily recognizable that the sport has now reached its zenith in terms of its popularity domestically. Now as the sport’s hierarchy seeks to further its presence on the global front. We’re led to believe that the sport can gain some further traction and resonance with a new-found fledgling of true budding NASCAR fans.

Juan Pablo Montoya of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing .

It has done its very best to lure the ever growing Hispanic market into the fray and with the popularity of Juan Pablo Montoya -his accessibility and the fact that he’s qualified for the final stages of the postseason. It bodes well for Brian France and Mike Helton , who oversee the sport under the NASCAR banner. And though it would be doing NASCAR a disservice in being critical of in their drive to lure fans of ethnicity and in particular the African American race within the sport. It’s been something of an uphill battle for the sport’s hierarchy thus far. They initially went about this haphazardly .Albeit , that they now have NFL star Randy Moss , who’s competing in NASCAR , as an owner in one of the lower echelons of the sport- the Truck Series. He’s had some semblance of success within the series and his fervor and passion for the sport hasn’t gone unabated. His Randy Moss Motorsports team has been at the forefront of NASCAR’s drive to lure the fans of color to the sport. And in particular those of the African American persuasion. And at the same time NASCAR also has its very own diversity program in place- which is proving to be something of a success .

As I alluded to earlier NASCAR went about trying to lure the African American fans with about as much aplomb as as would be befitting a group that they’ve been oblivious to in recognizing their many contributions to the sport over the years. And it most certainly didn’t initially help their cause when the interest shown by former NBA star Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson was summarily brushed aside with their feigned interest in Johnson’s wish to enter the sport as an owner. Communications and PR wise it was an immense blunder on NASCAR’s part. But they’ve learnt from those mistakes and continues to do their utmost to make all fans welcome to the sport.

Randy Moss discusses his passion for NASCAR on ESPN’s sports magazine program E:60.

As to NASCAR’s winding down to its regular season schedule and the upcoming postseason events. Well , there’s been about as much excitement created-as that of watching paint dry. Granted, the sport has its colorful cast of characters. But in all honesty , without its most popular Dale Earnhardt Jr not competing in the postseason. The ensuing events will create about as much excitement as watching a performance of Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson lip syncing to one of their odious pop songs. The fans of the sport will no doubt tune in for the events as they take place and even in this dire economic climate. The faithful fans will turn out in some quantity to cheer on their very own. But as it’s been widely acknowledged that the sport has been seeing a decline in attendance for many of its events at the Sprint Cup level. The feeling is that some changes will have to be made with regard as to how NASCAR determines it champion in its highest echelon event. They’ve tinkered around with this system since its inception. And yet it has not been to everyone’s satisfaction. Though the drivers have seemingly remained mute on the topic. The fans for their part in general have accepted it up to a point. But there have been those who’ve voiced their displeasure as to the competitiveness and veracity of the system.

One has to take the good , the bad and the ugly . O'Neal and James auditioning for ' Dancing With The Stars' ......maybe . There was a case at one time, where one could state unequivocally that Shaquille O’Neal was one of the most dynamic athletes in the NBA. In his younger years the fifteen-time All Star was also viewed as a dominant and some might opine an athletic individual. Nowadays, that would most definitely be the furthest thing from the truth. O’Neal, never one not to allude to his own perceived greatness. In truth however, over the last five years , he’s been doing it all with smoking mirrors. OK, it’s agreed he’s won with Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. The latter of whom, made a much greater contribution in the Miami Heat’s effort to win its only NBA championship-than O’Neal,, himself, is prepared to acknowledge. Granted ,he made the guarantee to the Heat’s fans that he’d secure them a championship. But having done so, he outstayed his welcome and inexplicably became something of a pariah amongst the fans and organization in Miami.

Shaquille O’Neal takes on the NFL’s Ben Roethlisberger and tries to prove his worth as a football player. Tonight’s episode of his show -you will get to see O’Neal go up against multi- Olympic champion swimmer , Michael Phelps in the pool.

After his sojourn with the Phoenix Suns, where his domicile with the team brought about some excitement amongst their fans. But added very little as to the team’s competitiveness and hopes of making the postseason. O’Neal now finds himself on his way to Cleveland to play alongside the ‘anointed one’ - LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. And now there’s the added incentive for Shaq to play alongside James and guide this team to its first win of an NBA championship. It has to have been the primary reason that , the franchise’s owner, Dan Gilbert and GM Danny Ferry made the splash to acquire the player. With the clock ticking on James and his desire win a championship with the franchise . And the very fact that he’s not yet prepared to address his future with the team as to whether or not he’ll stay or pursue his career goals elsewhere. This season will be make or break for the Cavaliers-as well as for both ,LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

O’Neal in the ring with former world boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya.

Last season’s disappointment of being dispatched by the Dwight Howard led Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA postseason ,was a bitter pill to swallow for James and his teammates. And the thought is with the addition of O’Neal . It will be enough to put the team over the top. But much of that will be predicated upon O’Neal’s wish to be first, a team player and at the same time defer to James. Never-mind that O’Neal’s health and fitness will come into play. And even with his performances with the Suns having been somewhat lackluster. There is the strong belief that this may well be all the motivation he needs to prove the naysayers wrong as to his declining form and zeal for the game. But I for one wouldn’t bet on it. Shaq’s been mailing it in and the whole world knows it ! And the very fact of the matter is , he has been robbing several franchises blind with his antics and his lack of professionalism when it comes to the game !

LeBron James talks about his new teammate Shaquille O’Neal and the expectations ahead for the duo.

Now we’ve been regaled with his laughable efforts to prove that he’s an athlete who can perform at the highest levels in certain sporting endeavors. His ABC reality show ‘Shaq vs.’ is about as welcoming a respite as having teeth pulled without the use of novacaine. It’s embarrassing not only for O’Neal but also for the athletes participating in the facade. O’Neal as always , the consummate class clown but even the class clown eventually has to grow up and act with maturity. Something that O’Neal has failed to exude at this juncture. For the athletes such as Albert Pujols, Michael Phelps ,Oscar De La Hoya, Kerri Walsh and Ben Roethlisberger , amongst others. It may well have been fun to be around Shaq and to have participated in the concept. But in actuality unless they were very well compensated by ABC and the thought of raising their profile alongside Shaq was deemed to be necessary. The endeavor has been an entire waste of time. Was there anyone actually watching ? So much so , it’s understandable to me why ABC would want to place this piece of garbage on the network. It can remind us why , we are appreciative of real athletes who can consistently perform at the highest level. Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t done that in years . And that’s why when it comes to the silly season we’re asked to put up with more than the human condition can bare.

PTI Inquiring Minds Need To Know

Unless I’m mistaken but have the Los Angeles Dodgers (83-58) suddenly forgotten how to play baseball ? Merely a little over a month ago this team had a 7 game lead on their nearest rivals within NL West, within the division . And they almost certainly had the best record in baseball. And now all of a sudden they’ve become about as welcoming a sight as the President is,to those who oppose his health-care reform package. Well, that’s in terms of their competitiveness of on the field of play. Which at this moment in time can be best described as being lackluster.

Seemingly now the Dodgers have the Colorado Rockies (81-60) breathing down their necks. And those within the Dodgers’ organization and their fans would have you believe that they’re not overly concerned with the situation. Unless I’m mistaken anyone within the Dodgers’ shoes ought to have a great deal to worry about at this juncture. It’s not as if their play of late has reflected a team playing with a great deal of confidence to begin with. At the same time the Rockies have merely thought “….. what the hell , let’s give it a go and see where things take us ?” And if that’s not enough of a warning for the Dodgers . When one considers that this team has performed underperformed in their last ten games , going (5-5)against that of the Rockies’ impressive 9-1 . One can well understand why it is that all of a sudden the impression of the Rockies creeping up and then perhaps supplanting the Dodgers atop of the NL West isn’t as outrageous as it’d first appear.

Dodgers’ fans be afraid , be very, very afraid . Because should your season go up in flames as to your aspirations of the winning the division. And then for your team not to regain its composure and then contend in the playoffs. Be prepared to become the butt of so many jokes across MLB . Perhaps even more so, than for the likes of the Mets, Cubs , Pirates , Nationals and Royals’ fans.

The Dodgers’ struggles haven’t just been at the plate but their once stellar pitching has all of a sudden become pedantic. For the moment we can but only take the wait and see attitude as to the team’s plight. As to the excuses that may well be forthcoming from their fans . Well, who knows what they might be should things not fare well at all ?

So it’d appear that all of a sudden , the now under siege commissioner of the NFL , Roger Goodell , thinks it prudent to hire former NFL coach and analyst, John Madden as a special counsel ? Madden will provide, it’s been assumed – Goodell, with much needed advice as to issues that the league now faces. As well as meeting with the general managers around the league to discuss various problems they no doubt feel pertinent. The former coach will also keep the commissioner up to date with weekly calls .

Granted , on the face of it this seems like a wise move. But with the ensuing upcoming round of meetings that will no doubt be taking place between the league and the NFLPA and its senior representative , DeMaurice Smith. These meetings are bound to be very contentious as the two sides invariably discuss the renegotiating of the collective bargaining agreement. One has to remember that the NFL chose to opt out of this – much to the dismay of Smith. And the league takes the standpoint , that in light of the change in the economic environment - changes had to be made. However, one has to also remember that this agreement wasn’t set to become void until the end of the 2010-11 season.

Madden to serve as special adviser to Goodell

NEW YORK (AP)—Hall of Fame coach John Madden will serve as a special adviser to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The league said Thursday that as part of his unpaid position Madden will chair the coaches group in the competition committee. Madden will also participate in meetings of a general managers committee and be part of a weekly call with Goodell or another NFL official to discuss issues from the previous week’s games.

Madden retired from broadcasting in April. He says the new role allows him to stay active in football. Goodell says that when Madden suggested helping out, “it was an offer we couldn’t refuse.”

______________________________________________________

Wise , aged and presumably viewed as something of a sage when it comes to the NFL and the game itself. I personally, can’t envision Madden being something of an enforcer . Much less, a Mafia consigliere in the mould of a ‘Tom Hayden’ , or that of Al Capone’s enforcer Frank Nitti. Madden may well bring with him a great deal of respect to the table. But in all honesty , if anything he’s more now known as a celebrity and NFL analyst.
Albeit , that as an endorser of EA Sports’ Madden NFL 10 . The game which bears his name and which has made him immeasurably wealthy. We can only surmise that Madden clearly believes that he still feels he has a role to play within the NFL. As to the pretense that he can work with the likes of Goodell and provide him with sound advice , heed the thoughts of the owners and GM’s alike. It could very well happen, but I, for one, seriously doubt it ! Madden may well have an instinctive mind and his analysis and commentary of the game can at times , be insightful. One doubts that when it comes to the business aspect of the NFL’s workings, he can provide Goodell with anything worthwhile.

The game has changed immensely since Madden stepped away from it as a coach. And while the players and their attitudes have invariably become more business like. And there’s also now more of a ‘me’ mentality as to their persona , for many of them . Whatever Madden and Goodell hope to achieve had better be tempered about as what’s perceived to be best for the game and that of its most loyal fans. Issues asides, can we actually now expect Madden to proclaim there to be a ‘Brett Favre Day’ within the NFL , anytime soon ? I mean after-all he’s been the biggest Favre supporter of them all , throughout the years. His wanderlust for the player has never been abated. And now with Favre’s return to the NFL , one might wonder whether or not he returned to that inner sanctum in order to be closer to his hero ?

What is it now with social networking and everyone wanting to Twitter ? I mean, you know things have got to be bad when the likes of Paris Hilton , Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs feels it necessary to let you know how their day is said to be going. Where’s the rhyme and reason behind it all ? Is there no longer the need to hold a conversation with a person face to face ? But perhaps , it’s just me !

Well Allen Iverson has let it be known that he’s finally found a place where he’ll be domiciled professionally. The player ‘tweeted’ that he’d be joining the Memphis Grizzlies. Laugh if you must , but at least it’s not the Los Angeles Clippers. All fooling asides, it’s sad to see a player of Iverson’s undoubted talents fall so far in such a short space of time. But the player has signed a one year deal with the team in the hope of leading them to some semblance of success. And for a team that’s never been in contention for anything within the NBA , other than being steeped in the depths of mediocrity. It’s hoped that in some way he can fulfill those aspirations for the franchise and its fans.

I’ve longed maintained that some athletes tend to remain in the game far too long. Even when their skills are on the decline and they can no longer contribute to a team. And that becomes even more glaring when an athlete performs as an individual within the sporting arena. We’ve seen it with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya , Joe Namath and most certainly Brett Favre ! But you’d be hard pressed to tell even Favre’s most erstwhile fans that. Many of whom believe, that he’ll be able to work miracles there in Minnesota , with the Vikings.

As to Allen Iverson , he may well be able to change some of the thought process there within the franchise. But it’s clear that this is just being done as a maneuver to lure Grizzlies’ fans within the Fedex Forum their home arena, in Memphis. Of late it has been sparsely attended for NBA league games. And with Iverson within their midst , it’s hoped by the franchise’s owner Michael Heisley , GM Chris Wallace and team coach , Lionel Hollins that the player can bring some luster back to the franchise. And as to the form that the luster might take, is anyone skeptical as to its apparent form ?

So please pardon the interruption as this inquiring mind needed to know what your thoughts might be on this particular subject matter ? Any answers at this juncture ?

Being There Live Or Watching From The Confines Of Your Home ?

There’s no denying that investing one’s money in a sports franchise by way of purchasing a ticket for an event or in the stock market at this moment in time. Well, it’s about as wise , as allowing Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan to indeed drive an automobile with a child in tow. You know for a fact that no actual good can come of it. And at this moment in time the same could very well be said for any investment made in a professional sports franchise.

And that would most definitely count for any one of the major sports governing bodies and their franchises. Be it NASCAR , NHL, NFL, NBA , MLB . And dare I say the MLS ? We can attest to the fact that the country is in an economic downturn. From which not even the many experts are sure of when the tide will no doubt turn. Meanwhile, we’ve seen each of the governing bodies mentioned shed jobs and and in some cases raise general admission prices as well as season ticket prices. And if you should happen to be an erstwhile follower of any of the major sports in question and should happen to be all too willing to put down an extravagant amount for a PSL non-refundable deposit. Then I can only assume that you’re prepared to pay for the privilege of supporting your team live.

I’ve got to admit that I’m an avid sport’s fan and my allegiances are to the following teams. In no discerning order they are the San Antonio Spurs , New England Patriots , Florida Marlins and with regard to NASCAR and the NHL . Well , let’s just say you’d be more inclined to see me watching paint dry before taking a complete interest in either of those two sports and that’s despite their popularity.

It’s been often said that “…..sports is a way for one to get away from it all and enjoy a recreational pursuit with family or friends as the case may be.” And whilst there’s indeed nothing at all wrong with that. We’re now having to become ever more discerning as to our disposable income and where we’re indeed getting value for our money. Long gone are the days where a family of four could attend a major sporting event and spend less than $250-00 , even with the price of admission, parking and concessions. Which I might add that unless you’re a fervent follower of all of the major sports and are prepared to follow your team to the ends of the earth. The cost that one or even a family might spend on traveling several sporting events throughout the year has to be quite substantial.

For myself , being a lone bachelor , albeit , that at times the girlfriend is there in tow. I try and attend as many games as is possible when my team is in town. I reside within the state of Florida, in the central region of the state. So, when it comes to top flight sport’s franchises. The area isn’t necessarily inundated with franchises that meet that particular criteria in terms of premiere sporting entertainment. OK, some of you may well state that there’s the Orlando Magic, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Lightning , as well as the Tampa Bay Rays. Entertainment and true value for money in terms of the on-field product is a stark difference in a number of cases. But I might hazard a guess that there some who may well feel that I’m lucky in that respect. Given the number of professional sports franchises that there are across the country. Value is value , no matter where one might be. But then again so is beauty and isn’t that meant to be in the eye of the beholder ? So accordingly whatever your tastes are you’re supposedly plead your allegiance to a team.

Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton . A PPV event that garnered 1.25m buys. Mayweather defeated Hatton with a TKO.

Attending perhaps no more than 20 sporting events a year . The rest of my time I am quite prepared to either sit within the confines of my home to watch an event. Or in some cases , a number of my buddies and I will find the local sports bar and watch an event. This has now become a ritual for us , primarily on a Saturday night in terms of a PPV (*) event, when it comes to boxing. And then, it has to be a marquee card with premiere talent on display . And the same can be said when it comes the UFC and their MMA bouts.

Now for many of us, I know that in the present economic climate attending a sports event has to be measured against other familial priorities and urgent needs. So much so , that it now becomes not so much of a want but more of a luxury in attending a sports event. At the same time we also have measure the benefits one is said to obtain from that. Whether or not it’s something that can be measured tangibly. As it now stands I’d be hard pressed to say that going to a game would still be of a real benefit. And it’s not just from the standpoint of the economic climate. But I know that in the confines of my own home , alongside friends or family as the case maybe . I can enjoy an event to my heart’s content and judged upon the content , I can switch to another channel if the event in question isn’t to my liking. However , if you’re there at an event live and it isn’t to your liking . The only two choices you’ve invariably got ,are whether or not to stay or to leave ? . And in doing so you’ve then got to question your wisdom in making such an expenditure to begin with.

On the 19th September Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel-Marquez will meet in a welterweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Which will act a precursor for the privilege of meeting Filipino boxer , Manny Pacquiao in a blockbuster bout , possibly later on this year or early, 2010 .

As  for  Gilbert’s  own  wish  to  have  a  cash  infusion  into  the  Cavaliers’ organization.  It’s quite understandable   given  the   fact that  he   and  the  hierarchy    within  the  Cavaliers’   inner circle  have  got  to  be  looking   ahead as  to  the  direction they  believe the   franchise  to  be   heading  in.    In   2010   they’ve  got  to  look   secure  the  re-signing  of  their   superstar  LeBron  James  .  And   if  nothing   else   bolster  the  roster   if   the  franchise  is  to  be   thought  of  as   a  legitimate  contender   for    postseason  honors,  in   terms  of   winning  an   NBA  championship.

LeBron James leaves the court after his team's loss to the Orlando Magic in game three of the Eastern Conference Finals played at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida.

LeBron James leaves the court after his team's 99-89 loss to the Orlando Magic in game three of the Eastern Conference Finals. The game was played at the Amway Arena in Orlando , Florida. Orlando leads the Cavaliers 2-1 in the best of seven games' finals.

The  postseason   travails  of  the   Cavaliers   thus   far  has   been   impressive.   But   now   it  appears  that   they’ve   ran  into  a  buzz-saw  in the  guise  of the  Orlando  Magic. With   tonight’s  99-89   loss   to the  Magic  and  the   fact that  they  now  find   themselves  in a  2-1  deficit  in the  Eastern  Conference  Finals.   It  might   suggest  Gilbert   may  well of the  opinion that  the   team   mightn’t  be  the  franchise  everyone   believed them to  be .

The   postseason  has    a  way  of   creating   something  of   an   illusion.    And   nowhere  is it  now  becoming  more  apparent   than  with  the all  too  unbelievable  fortunes  that  has   befallen  the   franchise.    What  was  seen   as  the  season  that  was  filled  with  so  much   promise.   All  of a  sudden  it   looks  as  if  it’s  all   falling   at  the  feet  of  LeBron  and  his  castmates.   But for   his    heroics   in   game  2 , we’d  be   talking   about   the  Magic  leading  this   series   3-0  and  looking  to  close  it  out   ,  in  double   quick   time.     And though the  belief  is  that   this   series  is   still   far  from  over and  there’s  still  a  great  deal  to  play.   One  can’t  but  help  feeling  that  a  further   loss.  And  indeed  the  postseason  ambitions    of the  Cavaliers  would  be  definitely   dead  and   buried   , bar  the  shouting.

Now  comes  the  hard  part  how  will  this  all  be   viewed   by  the   fans  of the   Cleveland  Cavaliers  ?   Would  the  impression   be  that   Gilbert  is   looking  to  actually  sell  the  franchise ?   Could    his  financial    viability    be  teetering   on the  brink  of a  precipice  ?   Billionaire  or   not  this  is   still    a  tough  time  for  everyone  in this   financial   meltdown.

LeBron James (left) and Dwight Howard share a few words during the game interval of their Eastern Conference Finals matchup played at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Fl.

Gilbert   is merely   looking  to   make   sure   that  his   slice  of the   pie   still   remains   the same.  And   if   anything   also   his   slice  of  the  American  Dream   still   is  in  tact.      The   fact that he  might   be  selling  to  a  foreign   investor   shouldn’t   really   be  a  cause  for  concern  should   it  ?

Afterall  it’s  not as   if  it’s  a  major   industrial   entity that’s now   falling into  the  hands   of  a   foreign   invader  ?  Or   is it  ?

The Writing Was On The Wall Somehow Some Didn’t Heed The Warning

The Writing   Was  On  The  Wall   …..Somehow  Some   Didn’t  Heed  The Warning

Last   night   the  San   Antonio  Spurs   were   unceremoniously    dumped  out  of  this   year’s   playoffs  in the   NBA.   Having  succumbed at the  hands  of  their  instate   foe  divisional   rival  the Dallas Mavericks.  It  has to   be   said  that    this   was  all   foreseen    the  very  moment   they   lost  their indomitable  super   sub   Manu   Ginobli   before  the start of  the  playoffs.   If  nothing   else   this was   as much  a   gut  wrench  to the  team  as  it  was   for   their   fans.

Josh Howard of the Mavericks dunks the ball while the Spurs' Michael Finley looks on in game 5 of the playoff series between the two teams.

The Mavericks would end up winning the game (106-93) and close out winning the series 4-1. picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ D Clarke Evans ................

However  in  losing  the   series   outright  (4-1)   and   the  result of  the   game  last  night  being   so  conclusive  with  an  emphatic   106-93  win.   The  Dallas  Mavericks   move  on   with a   no  doubt   happy   owner  in Mark  Cuban   smiling  from  ear to ear. For  the  San  Antonio  Spurs  the   ride  while   it  lasted  was a  pleasant  one   for  their  fans  and   the  community  at   large.

However it  can’t  hide  the  fact  that   the   team    underperformed.  And   much of  that  responsibility   rests   squarely  on the  shoulders   of  coach  Gregg Popovich  and   that of    his  bench  players   who   failed to  show   up.  It  was  left   to the    team’s   erstwhile duo  of  All  Stars   in   Tim   Duncan   and   Tony  Parker   to  try  and  carry   the  team   on  their   shoulders.     And  as  gallantly   as  they   both   performed    the   task   was  made   all   the  more  insurmountable   by  the  ineptitude  shown   by  the   duo’s  supporting   cast.

Popovich   in  large  part   was   outcoached   by  his   counterpart  Rick Carlisle  throughout   much  of this  series.  But  then again   the  Mavericks’  players  also   stepped  up  to  the  plate  and   answered  the  call  of their   coach  to   go  out  there and   execute.  And   nowhere  was   this   more apparent   than  with  the  play   of  Josh  Howard     who   proved  to  be  the   catalyst    for  the  Mavericks    through  much  of  the  series  when  it  mattered   most.    There  were  also    valid   contributions  from  Dirk Nowitzki  and  Jason  Kidd.  For  Nowitzki  he  may  well  be   now  cast  off  that   name  tag  of   being  considered    just  a  regular  season  player,  instead of   being   a   postseason performer.

And that if  anything   has   proven  to  be  the   difference  between  the  two   teams.   When   asked  for  the  contributions  to be   made  in whatever   way   possible   it   was   the   players  of  the  Mavericks   who  stepped  and   answered the   call.   For   the    Spurs  it  was   the  complete    opposite   but   for  the  exceptions   of  Duncan and  Parker.   The  Spurs  were   languid  and   slow  to   the   touch   and   but   for   their  sole   victory  in game   2 of  the   series.    This    would   definitely   have    been a  blowout    for the  Dallas Mavericks.  The  heroics  of   Tony   Parker  in that  105-84  triumph   cannot    be   underscored.   Parker   himself   single  handedly    willed  the  team  victory  and   ended   up  scoring  38 pts  in  his   team’s  triumph.

The  thing  now   everyone may  well  be  asking    is  what  now  happens to  the  San Antonio  Spurs  ?   Having   won   four   NBA  championships    in   the  decade.   They may  well  have   been  considered   a   modern  day   dynasty.   And   if   nothing  else theirs  is  a   consistency   that’s  not   often  seen   in the  game   over  the  decade  in  question.  However  with   Duncan   now   viewed as   an  aged   veteran    no  longer  being  able  to  perform   like   the   player   he   once  was in  halcyon days.  It  has  to  be  said  that this   is  no  longer  the   team    that  once    performed   so  methodically and   whom   about   everything  was   admired  as  an  organization  within the  NBA.    Never    viewed  as  one   of  the   more  glamorous  franchises   within the  NBA.   That  spotlight   is  often  shone  on the  Los Angeles    Lakers , Chicago Bulls  (Jordan  era) and  Boston  Celtics   because of the  renowned   history. Though   now  there  are   fans   who  believe  that  the Cleveland  Cavaliers   ought  to be   added  to  the  mix.   I  beg  to   differ  as  having   perhaps  the  game’s  most  celebrated   player   in  LeBron  James  at  present   doesn’t  give   you   legitimacy  for staking  that particular   claim. You  have to  win something  first   be  considered  a  perennial  contender   amongst  the  game’s   elite.

Rip My Heart Out Why Don’t You ….? It’s All But A Done Deal ………!

Rip  My  Heart  Out  Why  Don’t  You  …?   It’s  All  But  A  Done  Deal    !

Well as  the  NBA season  comes  down  the final  stretch  of the  season.  A  number of  teams  with  playoff ambitions   are  aligning  themselves  and  jockeying   for  positions  that’d  be  favorable  in  terms  of  the  seeding.

In the  Eastern  Conference   it’s  all  but  a  certainty  that the  Cleveland  Cavaliers (62-15) will be  the  overall  number  one  seed.    And  it’s  a  deserving  mantel  to  have   for  what  can  be  best   described  as  an  outstanding  season.  Having  already   surpassed  the  60  win  threshold   for  the  season .   The   team  is   further   looking   to  cement   its  status   as  the  league’s best   team  in  terms  of  the  overall   win total  and   number  one  seeding throughout  the  playoffs.

That  being   said in  the  Western  Conference   the  Los  Angeles  Lakers (62-16) are  loking  to  make  something  of   a late   run and  perhaps  derail   the  Cavaliers’  hopes. Well  that’s  unless  divine   intervention  from  up  on  high .  I  think  it’s  pretty  safe   to  say  that’s  not   going  to  happen  at  this   juncture.   And   as  much  as   those   in  the  West  would   very  much   like  to  see this   happen  .  It’s  somewhat  safe  to   say  there  are  those   who’d   rather   see someone  else  seated  atop    of   the  hill.

Which  now  brings  me  to  my  next   point.   As  a  long  avid   San Antonio Spurs’ (50-27) fan.  I   for  one   felt  that  this  season  there  might’ve   been  a  chance   of  at  least  of  gaining   revenge   against  our  conference   rivals  in the  Los  Angeles  Lakers. Well at  least  I  thought it  was  going  to  be  that  way.    Much   of  the  season  it   has  been   something  of   a   turnstile  of  players  being    injured   and  re-injuring  themselves. Wherein  there  was  never   any   real   continuity  , fluidity  or  cohesiveness  as  to  the  team’s  play.  And  that  has  led  to   a  great  deal  of   inconsistency    despite  them  once  again  obtaining  a  50  win  season  thus   far.   Suffice  to  say   it’s  been  other  another  remarkable  coaching  job  done  by  Gregg Popovich.    Even  if  the  carousel  ride  itself  at  times  has  flirted  with   disaster.  And  the  milestones    he’s  achieved   the  man  still  remains  almost   unflappable.  He’s   won  four   NBA  titles   as a coach  and  this  season  became  one  of  a  handful   of  coaches  to  have   attained   1,000 regular  season  wins.    Joining  a  select  few   and   most  certainly   he’ll  one  day  be   enshrined   in the  Naismith  Basketball  Hall  of  Fame .

The View From The Top Is All It’s Cracked Up To Be …..Some’d Like It More Than Others

The  View From The Top  Is  All  It’s Cracked  Up  To  Be  ……Some’d  Like  It More   Than  Others

Tonight   is  the  night   whereby   the  defending   NBA  champions  the  Boston  Celtics (54-18) will   face   one their   main  challengers   and  conference  rivals  the  Orlando Magic (52-18).  It’s  being   viewed   as  a  make   or  break   game  for  both  teams.  And  in  many  respects  it’s   more   a  gauge   in  seeing   whether   or   not   the  Magic   can  be  considered  an   elite    team  within  the  NBA.

So   much   of  what  we  tend  to  view   is  all   about  perception  if  nothing  else.  And  over  the  last   couple  of   years   the   Magic  as a  team  has  improved  greatly.  But   can  they   finally  considered  to  be  one  of the  elite   teams within  the  NBA  ?  They  may  well  be  zoning   in  on  winning  their   second   consecutive  Southeast   Divisional  title.   And   that’s   most   certainly  a  compliment  to  the  coaching   of  Stan  Van  Gundy.   But    until   the   Magic  are  capable   of  showing   that  they’re   capable   of  just  making   the   playoffs   and   going   beyond  the   first   round  on  a  consistent   basis.   The  veracity   in  trying  to  make  the  argument   that  they’re   indeed  an  elite   teams  stands   on   shaky  ground.

This  season   they’ve   played   exceptionally  well   but    there   have   been  times   where  they’ve    come   back   to the  pack .  And   have   looked  extraordinarily   ordinary.   As  a  team  they    possess  a   player  who’s  now   considered   the  best   center  in  the  league   in  Dwight  Howard.   And that’s   no   disrespect  to  ‘The   Diesel’ Shaquille  O’Neal ,  who  it  can  be  said  is  now on the  downside  of  an  illustrious   career. It’s   now  Howard’s   time  to   shine   as  the   sun  sets   on  O’Neal.

Howard   for   his part   has  led   the   team  impressively  and    his   cast  of  subordinates  have  been  prepared   to   follow  wherever   he’s  led  them.   And  with  Hedo  Turkoglu  ,  Rashard  Lewis , Rafer  Alston and   Mickael  Pietrus   providing   able   support.   One   might   consider  the  team  to   be  a   worthy   if   not   dangerous    opponent   in the  playoffs.  They’ve   suggested  that   they  can   raise   the  level    of  their   play  and   be   on  par   with   some  of  the   more   finesse  teams   around  the  league.  But    all  too   often   we’ve   seen   spurts   where  they’ve   regressed    back  to  just  a    middle   of  the  pack   mentality   type  of  team.   And that’s   nothing  that  they  can  ill  afford  to  have  happen   in the  playoffs.   So  tonight   against the   Celtics  they  will  have   to   prove  themselves.   And   with  their   opponents   seemingly     rejuvenated  with the  return  with   their  inspirational   leader  and   the   player   viewed   as their   heart  and   soul  in  Kevin Garnett.    Tonight’s   game   should   indeed   be   filled   with  a  great  deal   of  drama   and   excitement.  And   no  doubt  the   Amway  Arena  in  downtown  Orlando    will  be  brimming   with  the  home  fans   hoping  to  see  their   team  acquit  themselves  well.

Whilst   this  is  all  being    played   out  we  can’t  forget  that  the  Celtics   themselves    have   something  to  play  for  as well.   With a   four   game   winning  streak   to  their   name  at   present .  The Boston Celtics   are   looking   for a  way   to   remind  the  Cleveland  Cavaliers (57-13)  that  they’re  still  close  enough   in their    rear    view   mirror   to  remind   LeBron  James   and   his  team  that  the  regular season  hasn’t   ended   just  yet.  And   with   the   number  one  seeding   still  up   for   grabs  even  though  it   favors  the  Cavaliers.   The   Celtics   would   like  to  remind  Cleveland  that   until  the schedule  is  finished  not  everyone   within  the  Celtics’   organization  has  given  up  hope    of  catching  them  before  they   reach  the  finish  line.

Whoever  holds  that   number   one  seeding   has  the  advantage   of   playing   their  games  at  home throughout  the  playoffs.   And   it can   be  said   with  the  home   record  of  Cleveland   looking  all  the  more   impressive.  The   odds are  against   either  Boston  or  Orlando   catching   the   Cavaliers  at  this   juncture.  Homecourt  advantage    does   mean   a  great   deal   but   if  anything   it’s   also  predicated   on  the   form  of  the  team  in question.   The   robust   home  record  (32-1) that  the  Cavaliers  possess  makes  the   team  all   the  more   ominous.  And   away   from   home   it   just   doesn’t   get   any  better   where  they  are  25-12.   So   whatever  way   one   would   look  at  it  . A  one   horse    race   is  now  on  the  cards  with    just   Boston   and  Orlando   looking  to   see  who   will  come   in  second    to   grab  the  second   seeding    in the  Eastern  Conference.

The   Orlando  Magic  are   8-2  over their   last   ten   games  with  a   three  game   winning  streak  in  their   possession.    But   if  anything    a  win  tonight   would   be  viewed  with  a  great   deal  of  pleasure   and  perhaps   cement  the   credentials  they’re   seeking.   Defensively   sound    and   efficient   when   needed  to  be  on  offense. The   team  wants   now   to show  that   they  also   possess  all  of  the   facets    that   one   would    consider   to  be   part   of   a  championship   caliber   team.   Howard  possesses  the  leaderships    skills   sought.   And  as  alluded  to before  he’s  ably   abetted   by  some  very   good   players  to   complement   his   skills.    But  all  too   often  what’s  been  seen  or  viewed   by   many   as  toughness   shown .  Suddenly   becomes   lackadaisical   where  the  effort   put    forth  seems  all   too  abysmal.  The   good   teams   play  well    but  the    great  teams   know  how  to   raise  the  level  of  their  game  and  maintain  that   consistency.

The  NBA  regular   season  is   now  winding   down   and  the   Eastern  Conference   if  anything   has   provided    us  with  a  great   deal  more  excitement  than  we   could   have   perceived.  Last  year  it   was    the  Boston  Celtics   streaking  away   with  the  best   record   in  the  league.   Then  winning  the  Eastern  Conference  and   finally   defeating   the  Los Angeles  Lakers    to    lift  the  NBA  Championship    trophy   for  the  seventeenth  time.     This    time   around    we   could  well  be   in   for  seeing  a  new   name   on  the  Eastern  Conference  trophy   and  perhaps   one   even  on  NBA  trophy  as  well.   But  that’d   also    be  predicated    on the  eastern   representative  being  able   to   deal  with   their    counterpart  in  the  West.

The   room  at the  top  does   give   you  a  spectacular   view.  As  you’re   able  to  look   down   upon   all  that    you   reign   over.  For   some  they’re    able  to  deal  with  the  climb   to the  top .  Others  aren’t  so  lucky  as  they  aren’t  able  to  often   deal   with  the  pressure  of   being   there   let  alone   remaining  there over a  long   period   of   time.

Is It Safe …………?

Is  It  Safe    ?

Those  are the  words   uttered   in    thriller   suspense  movie  Marathon Man” starring  Laurence Olivier  and   Dustin  Hoffman. “Is It Safe ?”:  And  if one   can  remember  the  scene    whereby  the  villain  of   the  piece   Olivier  an  on  the  run  Nazi  war  criminal   subjects his   prisoner  Hoffman  to  some  undue  torture  by way  of  drilling  into  his   tooth    with  a  drill.

Olivier (left) subdues his captive Hoffman and then proceeds to torture his captive with some unspeakable torture. Scene from the movie "Marathon Man" released by Columbia Tri Star Pictures circa @ 1974 ...........

What  then   follows   is  an   unseemingly  tortuous   scene   that  one   can  only   lament.    As  too  was   last   night’s   abysmal   showing   by  the  Los  Angeles  Lakers   in  their   loss  to the  Portland  Trailblazers.  No matter  which   way  you  slice  and   dice  it  ,  analyze  it  or  whatever.  This  may  well  have  been  the  Lakers’   worst   regular    season  display.  And   one  might  question the  fact that  there’d  been   a  skirmish   during  the  game  between  the  two  teams.  But   it  oughtn’t  to  excuse   the  fact    that  they  were  handed  their   heads  on  a  silver  platter.  And  if  nothing  else   it  proves  the   point  that  the  assumption  being   made  that  they  possess  the  deepest   bench  in  the  league  can  no  longer   be   justified.     Based  on  last  night’s  performance    they   were   anemic  to  say  the  very  least.

As   for  the  Trailblazers   they’re   proving  to  be  a  very   young ,  hungry  and   tough  team.   Whatever   they’re   lacking  in     inexperience  they’re  more  than  making   up  for  with  their   very   determined  displays. To  my  mind  they  are   indeed   the   surprise   team   within  the  NBA  this  season  and   the   fact  that  they’re   now   locked   in  a  two way   tie   within  their division  alongside  the  Utah  Jazz (40-23).  It  shows  the  progress  that   they’re   now  making  under coach  Nate McMillan.  He’s  providing  the   stability  needed  and  the  players   themselves  are   buying  into  the  thought  process  and   teachings. If  nothing  else  it  has  proved  that  this   team   though  not   yet   tried  and   tested   they’re   now  proving  that  they’re   capable   of   contending   with  the  best.   Whether  or  not  they   can  convert  that  into  anything  sustentative  remains  to  be  seen.  At this   juncture   they’re   trying  to   play  themselves   into  the  playoffs  and   garner  a  postseason  berth.

In  Brandon  Roy  the   Portland Trailblazers    possess   one  of  the   better   young   players  within  the  NBA.  And   this  season  he  proved  that   point   by  him  being  named to  the  All   Star   roster  of  the  Western  Conference   for  the  NBA  midseason  showcase  event.  But  it’s  not   just   Roy alone  that   one   has  to  be  impressed  with   on  this  team. The  roster   has  a  nucleus   that   should   they   remain  together   over  the   next    five   or   six   years   can   contend   for   numerous   championships.  But   that’d  be   predicated   upon  the  desires  of  the   hierarchy  within  the  organization  and  the   financial   constraints   that  they  would  be   under.  If  nothing  else   this   team   has   become  a  pleasure  to  watch  as  they  set  about   doing  things   the   right  way.    They  play  with a  zest  and  zeal   not  often  seen   in  such  a  young   and  inexperienced   team.

Ah The World Baseball Classic ………..

Ah  The  World  Baseball  Classic  ……….

Well  this   quadrennial  event   much    like  the  Miss  America  and  Miss  Universe  pageants.    When  it  comes   creating   a  hullabaloo  this  may  well  be  the  one   sporting  event   that   by  its   very  own   creation  may   well  be  about  as  relevant   as  the  pageants  mentioned  themselves.

The  only   thing  is   whereby   the  participants   of   the  pageants   seek something  of  relevance  at  the  end  of  the  day  .  The World Baseball Classic  only  seeks  to  apportion  some  sort  of   credibility  to  a  game  that  as  of  late   has     shot  itself   in  the  foot   more  times  than  one  would  care   to mention.

And  it  certainly  hasn’t   bode  well  for  the   game   domestically  that  its  hierarchy  has   been   about   as  proactive   in  dealing   with  many  of its  problems  about   as  much  as   the  Federal   government   has  been  in   dealing  with  the   current   economic   crisis.      The   game’s   most  prominent  star   domestically  is   under   a   cloud  of  suspicion   and   his   actions  as  of  late   have  been  deplorable.   And   now   comes   word   that  he’s   curtailed   his   availability  for  his   national side,  the  Dominican Republic.   What  makes   Alex  Rodriguez’s  actions   even  more   suspicious at    this   juncture is  his  every  move   thus   far   has   been  orchestrated   in order to  amass  degree  of sympathy   from  the  public.  Hip  injury  or  not  and  with   allegations   still  surrounding   and  his   steroid use.   Could  it  be that   this  might’ve  been   borne   out    of  his   of  the  illecit   substances  ?

As  to  the  event   itself  if  it   is   to  be   the   showcase  that   Major  League  Baseball  anticipates   and  that  of  the  game’s  international   governing   body.  Then   the   game’s   major   stars   who  are   representing  the   various   international   concerns  will  have  to  step  up  to  the  plate  and  make  sure   that  this  event  is   a  memorable  one   to  say  the  very  least.

The  event   itself  has  already  started  and  we’ve   already   witnessed  a  surprise   with  the  Netherlands  defeating  the  Dominican Republic 3-2.  They were  viewed  as  the  presumptive   favorites  to  win the  competition  outright.  But  then  again  the  US  team  was   also   viewed  as   a presumptive   favorite  at  the  Classic’s  inception.  And   we  can  all  remember  how  badly  the competition  went   for  the  team  can’t  we ?

The  United  States’  team  makes   its   formal  entry   today   with   a  game  against   Canada.   And  it’s being    viewed   with   a  great  deal  of   expectancy.   Its roster   is  filled   with a  litany  of    All  Stars  and  they’re  expected   to  overcome  the   play  of  the  northern   counterparts  with   some   ease.    But   as  we’ve   already   seen   anything   can    happen  and   will.  We’ve  already   had  a  number  of  players   saying  that    they’re  playing   with  and  for  the  pride  of  their   country” .  It’s   not  something   that   ought  to  be  undermined   but  in   reality   for  many  of  these  players  it’ll  be   the  only   opportunity  that  they’ll   ever   get  to   play   at  this  level   and  infront  of   a  viewership  on  this   grand   a  scale.

I’ll Say It Again ’cause You Can Jump Over The Moon It Doesn’t Make You A Team Player …………..

I’ll   Say  It    Again  ‘cause  You  Can  Jump  Over  The  Moon  It  Doesn’t  Make  You   A Team Player …………..

Last  night  just  in  case  anyone  missed  it  the  New  York  Knicks (24-35)  all  but   gave  away   a  game  to  the  Miami  Heat (31-27).   And  we  all   know  what  the  Knicks  are  actually  waiting   for   don’t  we  ?    The   chance  to  become   a  part  of the   LeBron  James  free agent sweepstakes.    Well  if  it’s  not   becoming   how   apparent   this  woeful    New  York  Knicks’  teams   really  is.   Then    there’s   no  reason  to  let   you  in  last   night.     Suffice   to  say   if  you  let  Dwyane  Wade   go  off   on you  then   you  deserve   what   you   get   and a   damn   whole   lot   more.

And   if there’s   anything  that   we can  all   agree   on  then  it’s   that   the  New  York  Knicks  aren’t  all  that  good  nor  are  they   likely   to  be   in   the  near   future.    I  don’t    care  what  anyone   says    but   if  the   team  isn’t  prepared  to  complement    James    with   an   arsenal  of   players    comparative  to  his   skill  level.  Then   how  in  God’s   name  can  they   expect to    compete   with  anyone   in  the  Eastern  Conference ,  much  less  the   rest   of  the  NBA.

And  as  we   let  this  all   foment   and   try    to  analyze   what   it  is   that   makes  the  Knicks   so   terrible.    It’s   becoming   patently    obvious   that   when  you’ve   got  an   ill   disciplined   team  whose   only   apparent   wish  is  to  play  offense.   One   can  only   understand   why  if  any   the  relative   progress   made   under  coach  Mike D’Antoni  has   been   minimal   at  best.   And   to   top   last   night’s   events   it   doesn’t   bode   well   for   the   league   when   someone  within  the  game’s   hierarchy   chooses  to   alienate   one  of   its  and  the  game’s   top   stars.    In   all    but   reprimanding   Wade   by   the  banning  of  his   wearing   a   band-aid   underneath   his   left   eye.   They  all   but   told   Wade  that   they   intend  to  now  make  the  league   something   more   akin  to   its   counterpart  within  the  NFL  …………”  a  No Fun  League “  .    Well   Commissioner David  Stern  and  his   autocratic   ways   do  tend  to   rile   the   rancor   of  many  of  its   players   one  way  or  another.

In  the   victory  last  night   by   the  Heat   120-115   over  New  York. It  has   all   but  cemented   that  the  two   teams   may   well  be    going  in    opposite   directions.  The  Heat  would   love  to  make  the  NBA  playoffs   and  it appears  likely   that  they’re   likely  to  make  it.  As   for   the  Knicks   any  aspirations  that  they   might   have   may   have  been   sealed   with  the   ineptitude   that   they’ve   shown  as  a   team  with  its   overall   lack  of   cohesion   of   the   court.   It   would    appear   that   whatever   communicative   skills  that    Mike D’Antoni   possesses   seems  to  be   falling   on  deaf  ears when  it   comes to  this    Knicks’   roster.  But  then   again  being   communicative  and   teaching     players   how   to  play   defense   was   never   one   of   D’Antoni’s   strongest    points   to  begin   with.    It   clearly   wasn’t   the   case  when   he  was  coaching   the   Phoenix  Suns   in   his   previous   stop  as  an  NBA coach.   Now   come  full   circle   the   teams  aren’t   that  much   different    in  terms   of   their  play   on court.   The   up-tempo  offense    is    still   there   but    beyond   that    there    doesn’t   seem  to  be   much   there    that’d    would    heighten  one’s   interest   in   the  Knicks .   Unless   you’ve   shown  the   utmost   devotion    to  the  team  the   way   that    film maker  Spike   Lee   has  over   the  years.

Lee’s   devotion  to  the  franchise     borders   on  the   type   fan  worship   and   devotion   shown   by   Jack   Nicholson  to   the   Los  Angeles   Lakers.  And  when   that   sort   of   devotion  is   being   shown     by  show   businesses’   top   stars   to   the   sport.  It   can  only   mean  that   they’ve    got  a  great   deal  of   time  of  their   hands.

The  New  York  Knicks   for  their    part   have  got  to  be   in  some ways   happy  with  the  play   of  Nate  Robinson.  He   may   well   be  the  lone   reason  to  watch   this   team   at  any   time.    Looking  down  at  the   roster  of  the   team  and  there’s  absolutely   nothing   there    that   would    have   you  believe  that  this   team  is   capable  of  competing    with  amongst  the  elite  of  the   NBA.   It’s  clear  to  see   why   the     LeBron  James’  overkill  as  to  his   final   destination   in   2010   has  become  so  much  of  the  lore   as  it   now  stands.   If   nothing   else   it  gives  the   fans   there   in  New  York   something  to  wish  for.  Well  that  along   with  perhaps  the  New  York  Yankees  winning  the  World  Series   or    even  Alex  Rodriguez  showing  up  in the  postseason  for  just  once  in  his   career.     But  then  again    isn’t   Alex   liable  to  blame  his   woes   upon   that  of   his  cousin  and   the   effects  of  the   boli  ?   Where’s   Papi  Chulo   when  you  need   him  most  ?     Well   Alex   much    like  your  New  York   counterparts   within  the  NBA  it’s   time  to   put    up   or   shut   up   once  and   for  all.

Jermaine O'Neal of the Miami Heat has to be restrained by teammate Udonis Haslem having got into an altercation with Larry Hughes of the New York Knicks during the game. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Lyne Sladky ............

And  as  of   now   with  this   loss   one  can  say  that  it’s   time   for  the  New  York  Knicks   and  their   hierarchy  to   look   at   what  it  is   they’re   now  striving  to  achieve. They’ve   struggled    in  almost    every   facet  of  the  game.  And   in  spite  of   everything  that     Donnie  Walsh  and    coach   Mike  D’Antoni   are   hoping   to   elicit    from  this   roster.  It   just   doesn’t   seem  to   be   equating    in  the   form  of   results   on  the   court.    The  fact  of the   matter   is   Wade’s   performance     last   night   basically  showed   us   all  the   monumental    challenges   that  this   team   faces   if  it’s   to   contend   with  the  elite    teams    within   the   Eastern   Conference   and  the   rest  of   the  NBA.    He   torched   the   Knicks    for     46  points   and  it   could   well  have    been   a  hell  of   a  whole  lot  more   were   he  able  to  apply   himself  more.

The  New  York   Knicks   for   their   part   merely     played   that  of  a    supporting   cast   as   the   Wade   and   his    teammates  waylaid    them  and  any  aspiration  that   they  had  on the   night.   It’s  at   times   like   these  we’ve    got  to  be   thankful   that     New  York  City  is   viewed  as  the   city  that  never  sleeps.  With   so    much   happening   around  this    vast  metropolis  .  It’s    good   to  know   that   there   are    avenues   where   can  one   spend  their   money   and   actually    obtain   something   or   real   value   in  return   that’s   tangible.   Spending  it  on  watching   the  New  York  Knicks   has  to   be  about  as  welcoming    as   having  a   root   canal.
