Herein Lies The Rub , The BCS Is …. ?

Someone really needs to let me know why I’m suppose to be enamored with the college football bowl games that we’re now being festooned with. It has become something of an oxymoron to think that these Bowl Games are in the best interests of competitive collegiate football. But that is what the BCS hierarchy would have us all believe. And who am I, to question their rationale ? Oh I know , I’m one of a growing number of detractors of the system ! But let’s put it this way, they’re hardly liable to listen to the fans of the game, much less anyone else.

Bill Hancock , the recently installed Executive Director of Bowl College Series (BCS). Hancock will oversee the operations of the BCS but is ultimately answerable to the six major conferences that essentially make up the organization. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo / Rex Thompson .......

The six conferences that in large part makes up the BCS, are essentially the custodians of a financial behemoth who’d rather see the status quo remain as is. And why not, when one considers that the system rakes in , in excess of $ 6 billion a year. The SEC, Big 10, Big 12,ACC , PAC 10 and the Big East make the operations of KBR (Kellog Brown & Root) (a Halliburton subsidiary)and Blackwater LLC seem like positive bastions of morality and accountability. Less we forget also, the six conferences in question, as too the BCS, is registered essentially, as a charity as a way of circumventing having to pay federal taxes. And the way the BCS operates, offers absolutely no transparency whatsoever. Much like the two aforementioned government contractors. Who by last count were under investigation by federal government under the auspices of the US Justice Department, for numerous issues borne out of their operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Misappropriation of funds and several criminal charges brought against both entities.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/nick-saban-coach-of-alabama-the-crimson-tide1.jpg?w=415&h=300" alt="Nick Saban (center) leads out his Alabama team ('The Crimson Tide') prior to the start of NCAA college football game.
Now it’s understandable that the system has its admirers as well its detractors. But from there your guess is as good as mind as to their very existence and what they represent and do. Does anyone really know ? But somehow here we are regaling over the virtues of this pseudo organization. They are about as trustworthy as La Cosa Nostra (Mafia). But then again what’s new ?

BCS again proves its worthlessness

By John Feinstein

Let us begin today by turning to John Swofford, the commissioner of the ACC, a football conference that might — might — have one good football team. As it happens, this is Swofford’s year to be the spokesman (read: spinner) for the BCS because the six commissioners who run the so-called power conferences take two-year turns trying to defend their indefensible system.

After Sunday night’s BCS “selection show,” — which had all the suspense of the tallying of the electoral college — Swofford said this about the fact that undefeated Texas Christian and undefeated Boise State had been so graciously included in the BCS bowls — actually one BCS bowl, since they will play one another in the Fiesta Bowl.

“I think it certainly shows that there’s more access than before in terms of the BCS system,” Swofford said. “If you look back in recent years, there’s a consistency in that access that is evident and very healthy for college football.”

Gee, why does the BCS need to spend all that money on former White House flack Ari Fleischer when it has Swofford and his fellow commissioners out there to drop such words of wisdom on us?

To paraphrase another former White House press secretary, here’s what the commissioner meant to say: “Look, Congress pretty much forced us to let them [non-BCS schools] into our house, but you can be damn sure they’ll be using the back door.”

Texas coach, Mack Brown (left) and the team's quarterback, Colt McCoy (12) seen here at the end of a NCAA game . picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Tim Sawyer ................

It’s now on to the Bowl Championship Series , a series of games set out to reflect the popularity of the collegiate football. But in no way does this determine or truly represent who eventually is the national champion in collegiate football, at the 1 A level. The national championship game will pit Alabama (13-0) of the South East Conference against Texas (13-0) of the Big 12 Conference. Alabama the newly installed number one team in the nation against the number three. Though these two teams are unbeaten , it was probably more out of serendipity than anything else that the BCS was in some way fortuitous with this final scenario. Whoop di-do , if that wasn’t a joke to begin with ! A ranking system that has a computer as part of the derivative in determining the actual ranking. Well there is voting , but that’s done by the coaches and writers who cover the sport. Did I miss something here ? Please let me know when China and the US begins to use computers as part of the democratic process , well with regard to them (computers) being able to vote. Can someone say I Robot ?

Well as much as I may well be looking forward to the big game itself, I’ll just say that I may well or may not watch. It’s not that I’m not an avowed a fan of collegiate football. But let’s just say that the game in terms of the BCS, is in dire need of restructuring . Unfortunately as it is all driven by commercialism and money. We ’ll just have to continue living with this monstrosity as determined by the game’s hierarchy and the tv broadcasters who over the years have emboldened the BCS to carry on with this outrage.

Now if you were under the impression that in any way shape or form, the BCS benefits the smaller conferences and schools within collegiate football. Then you’d be sadly mistaken, as theirs is the mantra ,…..’you’re on your own buddy’ ! And given the fact that it’s a rarity if the BCS actually recognizes the merits of a smaller conference and the contributions and competitiveness of a smaller school’s program. It is as if they’re not worthy of being part of the bigger overall picture as to the system and what it allegedly stands for. But you’d be hard pressed to find someone within the BCS not try and change things to the benefit of the smaller conferences and schools with national title ambitions. It’s essentially a ‘closed shop amongst the Big Boys’, unless you happen to gate crash the party. And even then, you’re still at a disadvantage in the ‘pecking order’ of things.

It doesn’t say much for your sport that’s allegedly male dominated but your most popular driver happens to be a curvacious self effacing female by the name of Danica Patrick. And in the world of Indy Car Racing (IRL) , where all things being equal . Danica Patrick reigns supreme as the sport’s most popular driver by far. Though she’s not the lone female competitor within the sport. Alongside Patrick as fellow female participants are Sarah Fisher and Milk Duno .

Patrick makes use of her assets and was in-fact #91 in Maxim’s Hot 100 females. She’s not averse to showing of her body to further gain that notoriety that she eagerly craves.

And in a sport where one excels through sheer determination and having nerves of steel to handle a vehicle that at times can travel in excess of 200 mph . One can only but admire Patrick, Duno and Fisher. Their male counterparts haven’t readily accepted Patrick within their throng. But in reality , they know that without her presence , the sport in effect would be on its last legs. Nevermind the fact that only recently had the sport re-enter into detente , wherein the former splintered factions of IRL and CART re-emerged to form the present body of IRL. For the present things seem to be working out OK.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/milka-duno.jpg?w=390&h=470" alt="Milka Duno of Venezuela.

The sport itself is now at a crossroads , merely of the financial constraints that a number of teams are now being placed under. With major Fortune 500 companies now leaving the sport because of the uneasiness of the current economic crisis. And the mere fact that in terms of cost effectiveness the visual media in terms of direct television advertising is far more cost effective , than that of spending millions of dollars each year, with marginal returns if that specific team isn’t having a great of success on the track.

History is made by Danica Patrick as she wins in Japan. Finishing second was Helio Castroneves in the Indy Japan 300 at the Twin Rings circuit , Motegi, Japan

Financially the sport cannot live without its major corporate sponsors or without the backing of several auto manufacturers. As the sport is one the primary testing grounds for its technology. But as with most auto sports where large part of the costs comes from the running of a team and the costant testing retesting. It’s easy to understand why it’s to cost millions of dollars to run a team for an entire season. It’s no wonder that several teams have either fallen by the way or merged with other notable teams in order to cut costs. The dilemma though for IRL was the impact that it would’ve caused had Danica Patrick left the sport to make the jump to NASCAR . The temptation was there as it had been suggested that several teams within the sport had shown interest in the driver. However , she was still under contract with her team Andretti Green Racing, until the end of the year. So it was imperative for the team and the sport not to lose the driver. She’d become the darling of Madison Ave , in terms of sponsorships and endorsements. But with Patrick , also came the glare of the spotlight for the sport in general. And genuinely that was what the sport wanted and very much needed.

Patrick’s Sports Illustrated 2009 expose’

For Patrick apart from her brassiness and her willingness to run afoul of her male and at times female competitors. There was no denying her eagerness to become a success on the track. She made history by becoming the first female to win an open wheel event within IRL. That moment came with her winning the Indy Japan 300 at the Twin Rings at the Motegi circuit in Japan , in 2008 . The fact wasn’t lost within the realms of the sport. And it certainly wasn’t overlooked by the press and the public alike.

By Associated Press

Danica Patrick has agreed to a three-year contract to remain at Andretti Green Racing and stay in the IndyCar Series, according to a report in the Indianapolis Star.

Patrick, the first woman to win a major open-wheel race in last year’s Indy Japan, is finishing her fifth season in the IndyCar series and is fifth in points. She’s been rumored to be considering a move to NASCAR and still could compete in a limited number of races.

Patrick’s agent, Alan Zucker, did not return calls from The Associated Press. The Indy Racing League and Andretti Green Racing had no comment.

The IndyCar Series season finale is Oct. 10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Jeff Belskus, the president and CEO of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has said the 27-year-old driver is important to the future of the series.

“I know she has said winning the Indianapolis 500 is important to her and that it’s a lifelong dream to win that race,” Belskus said at the Indy Japan 300.

Patrick finished sixth at this year’s Indy Japan, which was won by Scott Dixon.

NASCAR star Tony Stewart said this month that he has no doubts that Patrick will eventually make the jump to stock cars. They’ve talked frequently about what it would take for Patrick to go from open-wheel racing to the heavier cars.

Stewart said Friday at Dover International Speedway that he has not talked to Patrick about her decision.

——————————————————————–

And for Patrick it’d appear that her being in a swimsuit is almost as desirable as being in her fire retardant race gear.

It’s now almost certain that Patrick will remain within the discipline , having signed a lucrative three year contract with Andretti Green Racing. It will no doubt make her one of the highest paid individuals within the sport. And when one adds in her earning potential away from the track. It’s easy to understand why she’s the most popular driver within the sport. She’s no doubt the envy of many of her male contestants. However, in light of the fact that she’ll remain within IRL for the forseeable future. She may well participate in several NASCAR events. Quite possibly in the Sprint Cup Series ,as well as in the second tiered Busch Series . The opportunities are there for her.

The very infamous spat between Duno and Patrick had everyone talking . Even if it was viewed in some circles as being for all the wrong reasons. But as they say “….. a little bit of controversy never hurt anyone”. In this case it only added to the persona of Danica Patrick. Who some viewed as a bitch , while others viewed her as the sport’s saving grace.

And while Danica Patrick no doubt has her admirers . She also too , has her detractors. She’s often viewed as a person who’s willing to push the envelope just a little too far on the course and then seemingly take the stance that she wasn’t at fault. In doing so she’s courted controversy with her antics. But in the not much has come of it , by way of a reprimand from the sport’s ruling body.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/ryan-briscoe-6-drives-the-penske-dallara-honda-as-dario-franchitto-10-leaves-the-pits-chip-ganasssi-racing-honda.jpg?w=425&h=300" alt="Ryan Briscoe # 6 pits his Penske Dallara Racing Honda as Dario Franchitti #10 leaves the pits in his Target Chip Ganassi Dallara Honda.
For the male contestants within IRL , it’s hard to see what their take is on Danica Patrick. Some may well view her favorably . While there are bound to be others who look upon her as something of a mild irritant that for the time being they’ll have to live. Afterall the sport hasn’t seen a female competitor race within the sport since Janet Guthrie. Since the emergence of first Sarah Fisher , then to be followed by Patirick and Duno. The sport has seen a raise in its profile somewhat. And for the likes of Dan Wheldon, Tony Kanaan, Ryan Briscoe , Scott Dixion , Vitor Meira , Graham Rahal and Thomas Scheckter , this may seem as something of a welcoming
respite. Albeit , that it might well take away in part , the level of seriousness of the competition.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/danica-patrick-drives-the-andretti-green-racing-honda.jpg?w=420&h=300" alt="Danica Patrick #7 drives the Andretti Green Racing Dallara Honda in the Indy Car Series 300 at Twin Rings Circuit in Motegi , Japan.

Seemingly Patrick now has the sport at her feet to almost do with as she pleases. Let’s just hope that she’ll act with a little more decorum when competing. At the same it’ll prove to the fans of the sport she’s capable of not only being competitive . But also that she’s serious about remaining in the sport and looking for continued consistency and success. Patrick now stands fifth in the IRL standings and without much hope of winning the championship. But it represents thus far her most successful season to date. In 2010 it’s hoped she’ll look to make further progress in the series. And take another shot at making history by winning the series championship outright.

Coming into this NFL season , it was thought that there was room for hope and improvement as far as the Detroit Lions goes. And in the NFC North where the Lions reside , they’re at present 0-2 in a season still young in its infancy. Nevermind the fact that this team will have to contend with the likes of the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers within the division this season.

Detroit Lions first round draft pick, starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Carlos Osorio ...............

What has further exacerbated the Lions’ plight is that with the two losses suffered this season. The team has now lost eighteen straight regular season games , taking into account last season. And there we all know what transpired as to their travails. They had the pleasure of posting the first winless season since the NFL went to a 16 game regular season schedule. The players and the Lions’ fans in particular of had to face the ignominy of the franchise going down in NFL history – having the dubious distinction of attainig that milestone. Now with these two losses at the start of the 2009-10 season. One can only ask this of the franchise … are things liable to get a whole lot worse before they get better ? I for one don’t think that this would be something that the Lions’ fans and the fans of the NFL in general would be contemplating this early in the season.

Lions' coach Jim Schwartz and the team's defensive tackle Lance Cohen (98) look on from the sidelines as the waning moments die down in an NFL game played against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field in Detroit , Michigan.
Statistically for the Lions their season has become one of impending woes in every facet of their game. And if they’re at all to fare well , then there will have to be drastic improvements made on all fronts . The franchise took a great deal of pride in the fact that they drafted quarteraback, Matthew Stafford as the number one overall pick in the NFL draft. And it was thought that he would solidify the team’s offense with his play. And with veteran quarterback , Daunte Culpepper on the team’s roster. There too , it was felt that the elder statesman could provide his experience and leadership qualities in making Stafford’s introduction into the NFL an easy transition. So far thing haven’t seemed to have worked out as planned. Stafford’s baptism of fire has been a telling one to say the very least. He’ll no doubt learn from his mistakes but at what cost to his team and his very own psyche ?

Week one , saw the Detroit Lions capitulate to the New Orleans Saints in losing 45-27 . And in that particular game we saw Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees eviscerate the Lions, throwing for 6 touchdowns in leading his team to victory. In week two , we saw the Brett Favre led Minnesota Vikings inflict more of the same in defeating the Detroit Lions 27-13. The Lions were lethargic and ineffective on both sides of the ball. And it’s hard to see what the team’s coach , Jim Schwartz can now do from here. Inasmuch , as we know that Schwartz is passionate about the game and his team. It can’t have escaped him that history now seems to be repeating itself. And for Lions’ fans having to resort back to wearing paper bags over their heads to hide their shame and disgust ,can’t be someting that they’d envisage having to do once again this season.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—The Detroit Lions were down in their opener at New Orleans and refused to be out.

In their next game, the Lions stuffed Adrian Peterson more times than not and had some success running the ball against Minnesota’s vaunted defense.

Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford(notes) has connected with standout receiver Calvin Johnson(notes) on breathtaking plays and fellow rookie, Louis Delmas(notes), looked like a battering ram in a violent collisions with Peterson that jarred loose the running back’s helmet.

Detroit is off to an 0-2 start, extending its losing streak to 19 games, and yet coach Jim Schwartz is seeing signs of life.

“There’s tangible proof of what we can do—of what we’re going to be,” Schwartz said Wednesday.

The first-year coach and his players say a lack of consistency has kept them winless.

“We’ve put up two good quarters in both games,” linebacker Julian Peterson(notes) said. “Now, we’ve got to put it together for four quarters to win.”

Peterson insisted if Detroit can string together four quarters of sound football to win some games, earning a spot in the playoffs is possible.

Playoffs?!

The strange thing is , on this Lions’ team there’s a nucleus of young players who can play the game. The problem however, may well lie in the fact that they’ve yet to acclimatize themselves to the schemes being taught to them by the coaching staff. It’s not that there isn’t effective communication going on between Schwartz’s staff and his players. It’s just the mere fact that they’ve been all to slow on its intake. And nowhere is this more evident than in the play itself of Matthew Stafford. His play at best, can be described as being tentative. And when you have offensive weapons such as Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith . You had better be sure that you’re not under utilizing them from the outset.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/lions-receiver-calvin-johnson-goes-in-for-the-touchdown-against-the-minnesota-vikings.jpg?w=410&h=265" alt="Lions' receiver Calvin Johnson (81) goes in for the touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings .

The steps that are being taken are indeed baby steps and purposefully so at this juncture. Afterall , this franchise has had to live with the Matt Millen years. And those we know bordered on being manical in its very execution. Suffice to say, that with Millen’s departure from the franchise , sanity it was felt, was brought back to the inner sanctum of the franchise. Ownership, in the form of the Ford family, has been positive with the hiring of Jim Schwartz. And it is to the coach whom they now look to lead the team to success. And if success should found this season by way of an improvement upon last year. Then it can be thought of a resounding success by the organization.
If not then then they’ll just have to batten down the hatches and just get the job done in the best way possible.

I for one would like to think that this franchise after what it has had to endure . It can improve in such a way the fans and indeed the entire city of Detroit can feel a sense of pride in the organization. It’d indeed go a long way in suggesting that the bad times are now behind them. Rather than them having to endure unwanted notoriety and mockery from others. The history and legacy behind the franchise suggests that it’s capable of being and remaining a success in the true sense of the word. What one has to still ask at this juncture is, are the fans willing to wait for it all to materialize ?

As a fan of the NFL do you ultimately feel that the Detroit Lions can turn things around ? If so , how do you see them achieving this ? Will it take a year or longer ? And will the present coach be the one to guide this team back to respectability ?

I’d welcome your thoughts and comments on this matter and I’ll look forward to discussing them with you in great detail. As always, thanks for the incredible support shown. It’s gratefully appreciated !

Well it appears that the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars are in for a long and arduous season. Not only that but the now winless Jaguars at 0-2 within the AFC South , are seemingly facing an uphill battle in order to gain some semblance of respectability within the NFL .

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/jags-wide-receiver-nate-hughes-misses-a-pass-in-the-second-half-of-the-game-played-against-the-arizona-cardinals.jpg?w=390&h=300" alt="Jags' wide receiver Nate Hughes (16) misses a pass in the second half of a game played against the Arizona Cardinals .
And Sunday’s 31-17 debilitating loss , sustained at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals did nothing to dispel the growing disquiet amongst the Jaguars’ fans and around the city of Jacksonville. Clearly this isn’t just a growing concern amongst the fans but also the franchise’s hierarchy. They have to be now placing the club’s coach , Jack Del Rio under close scrutiny. In all probability Del Rio could very well become the first managerial casualty of this, still young , NFL season.

If the fact that the team hasn’t at all performed well during their first two games of the season. Well also consider this , there is a guaranteed certainty that the franchise will not sell out all of its eight scheduled home game this season. That is indeed a terrifying obstacle for the franchise to face. With the dire economic climate across the nation and the high unemployment(9.7%) across the state. The present fate of the franchise not only rests in the hands of its players but also , the fortunes of the state and in particular within the city of Jacksonville, itself. And for Del Rio and his coaching staff . Now isn’t the time to be making any excuses whatsoever ,as to how his team is underachieving. They’ve got to batten down the hatches and get this team back on the right track.

By Dan Wetzel Yahoo Sports

It was a fine afternoon for football Sunday in Jacksonville and 46,520 fans (actually, probably less) showed up to rattle around the city’s Municipal Stadium for the Jaguars’ home opener. The stadium, which hasn’t had a name-rights deal in two years, can seat over 76,000. The Jags long ago gave up on that number, and in an effort to avoid television blackouts they covered up sections to cut capacity to 66,066.

They still didn’t come close to selling out.

They’ve publicly stated there is no hope for filling the joint for a single game the entire season. They aren’t even blaming the fact they’re coming off a 5-11 campaign.

“Even if we made the playoffs last year, we’d still be in this situation,” Bill Prescott, the team’s CFO, told the Florida Times-Union. He went on to claim that based on playoff appearances in two of the last four years, the postseason is worth only a 5 percent bump in sales.

This is all the economy’s fault, Prescott maintained.

If that’s true, then the NFL’s grand small-market experiment hatched in 1995 is all but over. Jacksonville as a viable professional sports market isn’t going to end well. Eventually everyone will have to admit it.

No one is blaming fans for staying home. Even with discounted tickets and generous package rates, attending a pro sports event is an expensive and time-consuming proposition. You can be the most loyal fan in the world and never go to a game. Jaguar fans shouldn’t apologize for saving money for something more important than football.

Still, a market that can truly support professional sports has enough people who either can afford it or simply won’t live without it. Every town will support a new team or a big winner. The truth comes not in good times but, like now, bad.

Jacksonville is struggling. The unemployment rate is 10.5 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, and like much of Florida foreclosures are high.

——————————————————————–

Certainly there seems to be something askew with regard to franchise’s thinking as to their present problems. Chief Financial Officer of the franchise, Bill Prescott thinks that the franchise’s inherent problems lies in the fact .’…. the country is in the midst of a bad economy and that is in large part to blame’ for the the franchise’s woes. Either Prescott isn’t prepared to acknowledge the fact that the Jaguars can also be apportioned much of the blame for its own self inflicted malaise. Wherein, it hasn’t performed up to standard by way of being a competitive NFL franchise on the field of play. At best, the franchise’s form over the past few year can be described as being lackluster . One has to wonder if Prescott’s sentiments are shared by team owner , Wayne Weaver ?

Wayne Weaver (left) ,owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars is seen here with Atlanta Falcons' owner Arthur Blank at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium prior to an NFL game between their respective teams . picture appears courtesy of getty images / Paul Hughes ................

Coming off a 5-11 season in 2008 . It was felt that there was room for improvement for the Jaguars. Within the AFC South, they were always considered to be a better than average team. And within that division they may well have been viewed as the second or third best team behind the Indianapolis Colts . With the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans , as well as the Jags at one time or not being closely bunched together. The difference between the trio was a matter, as to their levels of consistency. Make of it what you will.

Del Rio for his part saw fit to rid the team of players, whom he felt could no longer contribute to the Jaguars. And though on the face of it – it might well have been done in order for the franchise to be financially prudent. Those players seem to now be making somewhat solid contributions for their new found teams. Draft wise, Del Rio sought young talent but at the same he brought in veteran wide receiver, Torry Holt, to add to the team’s receiving corps and provide some much needed veteran leadership. As to whether or not Holt can provide that theme, remains to be seen. And no doubt the jury is still out on that ? And the team’s roster doesn’t make you sit up and take note as to its presence. You’d be hard pressed to state that there’s someone on the roster that would seriously pose a threat on either side of the ball.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/jags-wide-receiver-torry-holt.jpg?w=390&h=460" alt="Jags' wide receiver Torry Holt signals a completion against the Arizona Cardinals in an NFL game played at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium .

We can regale that one of the problems also facing the Jaguars is that of the NFL’s blackout policy with regard to televised broadcast games. NFL Commissioner , Roger Goodell has taken note as to the inherent problems that this no doubt brings for many of the NFL’s franchises. In particular for those within the small markets. But he’s done little to address the issue, merely pointing out that the NFL has taken note. It’s plain to see that for Goodell and the hierarchy of the game ……the gravy train has to continue flowing without there being seemingly any disruptions in whatever form it might well take.

By Richard Sandomir

Reduced season-ticket sales for some N.F.L. teams could result in a greater than usual number of local television blackouts.

“It’s all part of the challenges that we’re seeing in the economy and what our clubs are going through,” Roger Goodell told reporters Tuesday at the Washington Redskins’ training camp in Ashburn, Va. “Our clubs have been working hard in the off-season to create other ways to try to get people in the stadiums and to have policies that are a little more flexible, and hopefully, they’re going to pay dividends for us.”

He said that the Jacksonville Jaguars, whose season tickets have fallen to 25,000 this season from 42,000 last season, were one of the teams whose games could be blacked out if their home games are not sold out.

N.F.L. rules require that games be blacked out in local markets if they are not sold out 72 hours before kickoff.

A USA Today survey found that the fans of a dozen teams might face some blackouts this season.

CBS and Fox said they did not expect the blackouts to significantly affect ratings or cause them to provide givebacks to advertisers.

The scene now facing the Jacksonville Jaguars now takes on an acute scenario. They have to turn things around with an immediacy not often associated with the team. And with the franchise’s fixtures now getting into full swing. Attaining wins will be of the utmost urgency for the franchise. Jack Del Rio , no doubt understands that he’s now on the clock. With that , each moment of indecision may well play a part as to his immediate future. The chances are he may well not see out the remainder of the season , should there not be signs of a significant turnaround. Meanwhile, Wayne Weaver and GM Gene Smith will be watching Del Rio with an intense scrutiny, for the first time since he took the helm of the franchise in January of 2003. Six years and but two playoff appearances under Del Rio’s tenure. It’s a meager dividend by most NFL standards . Certainly not something befitting Weaver’s lofty standards.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/jags-coach-jack-del-rio.jpg?w=410&h=300" alt="Jacksonville Jaguars' coach Jack Del Rio (center) contests a call by officials Greg Gautreaux (80), Bob Waggoner (25) and Gene Steratore (14) in the first half of the game played between the Jaguars and Arizona Cardinals . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Phil Coale .........................

Though much has been made of the fact that there has been dwindling attendance at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. And the rumblings that the ownership might well choose to relocate the franchise. Certainly for the fans of the Jaguars they may well feel that they’re being betrayed by not only the ownership but also the NFL . It could very well be that this present situation could be cause for the Jaguars to take leave of the city of Jacksonville , altogether. Because the fan-base there, seems to be dwindling in ever growing proportions. The dwindling loyal band of supporters appear to be no longer interested Jaguars’ football. And it’s not just because of the present economic climate. But seemingly , from a competitive standpoint as well with regard to lack its lack of success on the field of play. And you can’t but blame the economy for one’s own self inflicted woes. Bill Prescott, his fellow executives and the Jags’ management seem to be forgetting that at this juncture.

In the quaint old world of sports we all understand that the game itself has its foibles , history but above we’re led to believe its honesty, dignity and integrity.

And the venerable Vince Lombardi , a man known for his honesty and integrity but more so for his success and anecdotes. He states the following ……”Winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”

So it’d explain a great deal at present with regard to the plight of the Chicago Cubs and their woes over the last century plus. And the fact that they’ve continued to be mired in the depths of ineptitude. Furthermore the fans have had to endure these debacles without much recourse. When on the outside looking in would say it’s the Cubs’ fans undying loyalty and willingness to accept the futility that they’re prepared to endure such pain.’ Personally , I feel it’s all a bunch of hog-wash and it lies with the fact that neither the Cubs’ management or ownership aren’t prepared to be ambitious and do what it takes to place a winning product on the field of play !

Hearing on Cubs sale set for Sept. 24

Associated Press

WILMINGTON, Del. — A Delaware bankruptcy judge on Monday approved Tribune Co.’s request for quick court action on the company’s planned sale of the Chicago Cubs.

The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, has agreed to buy a 95 percent stake in the team and its Wrigley Field home for $845 million, but the deal must be approved by the bankruptcy court, as well as Major League Baseball.

Judge Kevin Carey approved Tribune attorneys’ proposals regarding notification to interested parties, including creditors of both the Tribune and the Cubs.

The process approved by the judge calls for any objections to be filed by Sept. 17, followed by a Sept. 24 court hearing on Tribune’s motion for court approval of the deal. Carey also approved break-up fees ranging from $5 million to $20 million to be paid if it falls through.

The plan filed by Tribune attorneys calls for a separate bankruptcy filing by Chicago National League Ball Club, a Tribune affiliate that is not involved in the company’s Chapter 11 case. That filing would come after Carey approves the sale as part of Tribune’s bankruptcy reorganization and escrow financing documents are in place.

Milton Bradley is formally introduced as a Chicago Cubs’ player. Listen carefully, as the player waxes on lyrically about his emotions with regard to the team. My, how times have changed ?

And even though the franchise, having been sold by real estate mogul and developer Sam Zell to Tom Ricketts and the immediate members of his family. Tom Ricketts is one the founders of the online investment firm TD Ameritrade . The final selling price was said to be $845 million . Somewhat of an overly inflated price but clearly what Zell was after- considering that he’d placed the Cubs’ parent company -The Tribune Group into bankruptcy proceedings. And whilst MLB haven’t been all that forthcoming as to the ongoing situation. We’re led to believe that Commissioner Bud Selig and MLB Chief Executive Officer Bob DuPuy were said to be closely monitoring the proceedings. This, I for one find to be totally preposterous. Considering the duo were about as cognizant of the issues with regard to the the steroid issue and its ramifications for the game as a blind man would be in the desert. You know it’s hot but you’re not prepared to do anything to safeguard yourself. Much as in the same they’ve both mishandled the issue. Albeit, that they’re now crediting themselves with what they believe to be the unparalleled success of the game’s steroid program.

In light of what has gone on with regard to Cubs . Isn’t it somewhat strange that a public comment hadn’t been forthcoming from the commissioner’s office or for that matter from anyone within the game’s hierarchy ? But then to MLB … silence is golden . Until there are serious ramifications for the health and financial well being of the game. But even then , they’ve failed to act appropriately and with due diligence. It is to be expected from an organization that has been as transparent as the members of Opus Dei . There’s a lot that they’d have us all believe divine as to their being. But there’s so much more that’s held from the prying eyes of the public. Much like the inner workings of the hierarchy of MLB

By R B Fallstrom AP Sports Writer

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Milton Bradley’s(notes) season is finished. Perhaps his days with the Chicago Cubs are, too.

The Cubs suspended their volatile outfielder for the rest of the season Sunday, one day after he criticized the team in a newspaper interview.

Bradley was disciplined for conduct detrimental to the team. General manager Jim Hendry said he decided to send Bradley home after learning of the player’s remarks in the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald of Illinois. Bradley, scratched from Saturday’s lineup with a sore left knee, was quoted as saying “you understand why they haven’t won in 100 years here.”

Bradley has two years remaining on a three-year, $30 million contract that he signed as a free agent last offseason. Hendry said he doesn’t know if the relationship can be salvaged.

“The last few days became too much for me to tolerate,” Hendry said. “I just decided late last night that’s what I was going to do, and I didn’t give it a lot of thought what’s going to transpire moving forward.”

Cubs manager Lou Piniella agreed with Hendry’s move.

“Jim made the decision and I support it,” the manager said. “I really do.”

Chicago signed the switch-hitting Bradley to provide balance in the lineup, but he struggled throughout his first season with Chicago, batting .257 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs. He was booed vigorously by home fans at Wrigley Field.

—————————————————————-

And if you thought that the present situation for the Cubs couldn’t at all get any worse. You’d be entirely wrong . As the team has taken the unusual step of suspending their outfielder Milton Bradley until the end of the season. The reason behind the suspension are for the statements made to the press with regard to the Cubs’ organization by the player. The Cubs for their part see Bradley’s actions as conduct detrimental to the sport and to the organization. Both GM Jim Hendry and the team’s coach , Lou Piniella are in complete agreement with the course of action taken.

And for the Chicago Cubs as a team who’ve underperformed throughout the entire season. Theirs is a situation that if anything , is viewed as irreparable. Piniella now seems to be out of his depth and unable to communicate with his players. Hendry as the team’s GM has been about as useful to the organization as a three legged horse trying to run an obstacle course. He’s fallen so many times that it has become laughable. Personnel decisions made under his tenure have proven to be disastrous, more often ,than not. And as a duo , Hendry and Piniella would make for some very fine comic relief.
It remains to be seen upon finalization of the sale of the franchise , whether not both the general manager and manager will be asked to remain with the organization.
If they’ve not been able to lead the team win anything of merit . Then in reality there’s no reason at all for them to remain with the Cubs’ organization.

The Chicago Cubs (76-72) remain 10 games behind the NL Central Division leading St Louis Cardinals (87-63) . As the season now winds down , it has to be said that for all sense and purpose the season just can’t end quick enough for the Cubs and their long suffering fans. They’ve been asked to endure far too much and more than any one fan can be asked to bear. And even though there are second , third and fourth generations of fans that still show their unwavering support to the organization. One has to ask the question ….’how much more are they all willing to bear’ ?

Bradley’s future with the club remains bleak and it’s enough of a suggestion to believe that the player won’t be back with the club for the 2010-11 season. And it wouldn’t be at all out of the question to suggest that the player’s professional career within baseball has reached its climax. One hardly feels that there’s still a major league team that’s willing to want the player- with the all the baggage that he’ll apparently bring with him. A worse case scenario, would be to see the volatile Bradley implode once again and seemingly bring down an organization with him. Best case scenario , he once again becomes a productive player and contributes to an organization. One of those is preferable but in actuality I’m inclined to believe that he won’t be around to contribute to a team. It’s as plain and simple as that !

For the Chicago Cubs and their long suffering fans. One empathizes with them. But at the same time how must they feel seeing the likes of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays all making it to a World Series . Two of those organizations winning the game’s most prestigious prize. But bear this mind, all three in question have been around a lot less longer than the Chicago Cubs, in terms of their tenure within the game of baseball. And it has been over 100 years since the Chicago Cubs won the last of their two World Series championships. And it could well be another century before they’re liable to achieve the feat again.

So what say you as to the impending fate of the Chicago Cubs ? The game’s lovable losers seemingly can’t win but for losing. It’s not been within their DNA for years ! Winning that is .

Well once again we have to thank the UFC for putting on such an exemplary show. At UFC 103, which was held at the American Airlines Arena , in Dallas , Texas. Home to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Coincidentally , the Mavericks who are owned by dot.com multi-billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban . His HDNet – a wholly owned cable broadcast outlet has been staging their own Mixed Martial Art’s promotions and events with a modicum of success.

Saturday’s staging of UFC 103 , was yet another in the long line of now ever more successful promotions that the UFC has undertaken to bring its brand to an er widening and most knowledgeable audience. And to see where the first event staged to what we are now seeing today. Dana White as President & CEO of UFC has taken this product and branded it in such a way . That you dare not say you aren’t aware as to what the sport is all about. It’s simplistic in its logic and the events are staged with such precision that one can well understand why there’s now such a growing following amongst its loyal and devoted fans.

The UFC promotional visual footage for the main event at UFC 103.

And as things now stand the sport is essentially on the cusp of surpassing boxing in terms of it being viewed as a spectator sport. It shouldn’t come as a surprise whose seen the gradual decline of boxing to begin with. It has become a complete farce and devoid of integrity and respectability. So much so , that you’re now having boxing promoter , Bob Arum , decrying MMA and UFC in particular – as a sport that’s filled with loud mouth tattooed Neo Nazi’s. Clearly Arum, is completely devoid of all knowledge when it comes to the sport and he’s showing his ignorance as far as the sport is concerned. It also smacks of jealousy on his part as he’s seen declining revenues come in with regard to the PPV events staged by boxing promoters in North America . Whereas, for UFC , it has steadily increased over the years. And in 2007, the revenues for events staged by UFC surpassed that of the entire events staged for boxing. It’s clear to see that Arum and many of his counterparts feel threatened by the rise of the sport of mixed martial arts. And what it may well mean for the sport of boxing.

And at this moment in time the sport of boxing is in dire need of a great deal of excitement. Whether or not the return of Floyd Mayweather Jr to the ring. And the continued rise in popularity of Filipino fighter , Manny Pacquiao can abate the stem of the sport’s decline remains to be seen. The highly anticipated match-up between the two may well go a long way in answering that question. But the real point is once that bout takes place . What’s next ?

Vitor Belfort (left) on his way to victory by knocking out Rich Franklin (right) in their light heavyweight bout at UFC 103 held at the American Airlines Arena , Dallas , Texas . picture appears courtesy of getty images @ copyrighted material ......All rights reserved

And while the main event card for UFC 103 was filled with a litany of top flight protagonists. The under-card itself, wasn’t anything to be overlooked. Albeit , that the headline event between Rich Franklin and the Brazilian, Vitor Belfort , was the bout that almost everyone was looking forward to. These two light heavyweights are amongst the very best that the division and sport has to offer.

The bout itself couldn’t have ended in a more shocking way. But it ought not have come as a surprise to begin with. Anyone who knows the abilities of both , knew full well that this bout wasn’t liable to go the full three rounds as anticipated. The right to contest for the UFC light heavyweight title will now belong to Belfort – after his timely display in knocking out Franklin in 3:02 minutes into the first round. The surprise and viciousness of the the display sent a message across the whole division that Vitor Belfort ‘is back’ and ready to take on all-comers. And it is to be seen if current light heavyweight champion will be willing to defend his title against his fellow Brazilian, Lyoto Machida . Another bout that’s bound to be highly anticipated.

Unfortunately for Franklin, the bout didn’t go as anticipated. It certainly didn’t pay however, for him to be making bold predictions as to what his intentions were from the outset. He failed to back those claims up of a knockout of his Brazilian opponent. In the end it was he , who was knocked out in devastating fashion .

As I’ve alluded to earlier , what makes the sport so rewarding for their fans. It is that the UFC is prepared to listen and make the matches they feel to be ones necessitated by the demands of the fans. Granted the fighters have to be in form , ready , willing and above all able to fight. Unlike the drivel that’s now derived within the sport of boxing. It is somewhat rare that an event promoted by UFC ends up being a disaster. What they tend to do is to make sure that not only is the main card an attractive one. But also too , the under-card for each of their events. Be it PPV or not. That is why the sport now has a distinct advantage over boxing , as a whole ! The stars within the sport of MMA now welcome the recognition they are gaining . And the loyalty shown to them by the fans is greatly appreciated. And the fighters , themselves go out of their way to reciprocate that. You’d be hard pressed to find that today in the sport of boxing . Wherein, many of their stars have become too self absorbed and rarely do they show their appreciation of the fans.

Well let’s face facts, the bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr (40-0, 25 KO’s) and Juan Manuel Marquez(50-5-1-37KO’s) in the end , turned out to be nothing more than a minor day at the office for Mayweather. He wasn’t at all tested by his Mexican opponent -who offered little more than being a minor bump in the road for Mayweather and his ultimate goal . And that’s to meet Manny Pacquiao in a highly anticipated mega-fight.

But first , Pacquiao will have to take care of his next opponent , Miguel Cotto. That fight is being viewed as an eliminator for the privilege of meeting Mayweather. The smart money at present is on Pacquaio to defeat Cotto. It’s viewed in boxing circles that a meeting between Mayweather and Pacquiao would offer the better fight in terms of commercial appeal and economic sense. It would definitely be something that the fans of the sport would crave.

And whilst the bout itself didn’t provide us with anything that we didn’t already know about Mayweather as to his boxing skills. It did tell us one thing most definitely – and that’s fighters such as Marquez despite their alleged skill-set. They’re in effect no real match for a fighter of Mayweather’s pedigree. And for the fans in attendance , although they may well have expected much more fluid performance from Marquez. It only provided us with further proof of what a wide margin there is between the likes of Mayeather , Pacquiao and when it comes to the other fighters within the welterweight division at this present moment in time. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao stand head and shoulders above the others within the division-that’s by a considerably wide margin.

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/mayweather-and-marquez-exchange-punches-while-on-the-ropes.jpg?w=380&h=460" alt="Mayweather and Marquez exchange punches while on the ropes . picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Eric Jamison................

The other thing that also is profound is that once leave the welterweight division . There’s very little to offer the sport by way of real talent and charisma in terms of the fighters now on display . In essence it has become a barren waste land of non-descript boxers with little talent and personality. Is it any wonder that many fans are now scurrying away from the sport in droves. And that seemingly idiots like once prominent boxing promoter Bob Arum is seemingly in denial, as to what’s wrong with the sport that he amongst others, has now turned into something of a sham , in terms of true entertainment.

Mayweather lands a good solid right to the head of Marquez during their welterweight bout . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Paul Moran ................

The bout was easily won by Mayweather and the judges had somewhat of an easy decision to make. He won the bout decisively and by a wide margin , scoring a unanimous decision in the end – over the course of twelve rounds.

The promotional tour for the upcoming Cotto vs. Pacquaio. The bout will be promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

Now the boxing world will wait to see if a mega-fight will take place between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Which will no doubt will be predicated upon the events that first take place between Pacquiao and Cotto , when they meet. For myself , as a long time boxing fan , who as of late , I haven’t found much to be excited about when it comes to the sport. Needless to say my appetite is wetted when such fights are made. Wherein, we have the very best of best facing off against each other inside the ring.

Unfortunately for a sport , that claims it has the fans’ best interests at heart. Of late the sport has been doing a lousy job creating great entertainment for even its most avid fans. Is it any wonder that many of them are now finding more compelling form of entertainment that’s now being found within the world of mixed martial arts under the auspices of UFC ?

NB : In order to hear Arum’s reasons as to why he believes that UFC and the genre known as ‘ mixed martial arts’ is what he deems ‘trash’ . Just click on the link provided below. There you’ll be able to see an interview he gave describing the sport as one filled with Nazi skinheads adorned with tattoos. Clearly Arum is devoid of knowledge when it comes to the sport and its growing following.

It can’t have escaped the most discerning fans of the NFL that there still remains one unsigned draftee of an NFL team. Now we can merely speculate as to what the problem might be concerning the San Francisco 49ers and their unsigned first round draft pick Michael Crabtree.

Niners’ president wants to meet with Crabtree

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora has confirmed a Santa Rosa Press Democrat report that 49ers president Jed York has offered to hold a face-to-face meeting with holdout Michael Crabtree.

York has yet to hear back from the rookie wide receiver or his agent, Eugene Parker.

Crabtree was the 10th overall pick in the April draft and is the only first-round selection without a contract. He caught 231 passes for 3,127 yards and 41 touchdowns in two seasons at Texas Tech.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do love a good suspense thriller . But in all honesty when it comes to suspense within sports. Then I expect to see it on the field of play during a totally riveting game. And most certainly not by way of an out of control college player who’s yet to play a down in the NFL. Crabtree from what we’ve been led to believe is at an impasse between he and the club over his compensation package. Now I know that when it comes to the first round draft picks . The premium is in the price that one signs a pick to. And while I understand that there’s an allotted slot system as to the amount paid from the first pick on down. Whatever is now taking place between and Crabtree is unwarranted.

The Niners and their hierarchy ought not to be dealing with either Crabtree or his agent Eugene Parker at this juncture. Crabtree forewent that right, the moment he started his holdout ,as to his demands for more money. At this moment in time, it becomes a complete distraction within the organization. And for 49ers’ coach, Mike Singletary , it makes his job somewhat harder. A great deal of time and effort by the coaching and scouting staff had been put into place- with regard to obtaining the player to begin with. Never-mind the fact that upon his arrival at the NFL combine he was ‘allegedly injured’ and refusing to participate in many of the prerequisite drills. If that wasn’t enough of an indicator as to his temperament, character and demeanor. Then they were certainly there for all to see, in his time with Texas Tech. A precocious talent but someone who could be easily distracted by off the field issues with regard to his personality and personal problems.

Executives against a concept of pick protection

By Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports

Two days after San Francisco 49ers team president Jed York opened the door for a détente with unsigned NFL draft pick Michael Crabtree(notes), the standoff still lingers between the team and agent Eugene Parker. And as the clock ticks, the lack of sympathy from the rest of the NFL only becomes more apparent.

On the heels of York’s offer, Yahoo! Sports reached out to highly placed personnel men from seven NFL teams, polling them on whether they’d support the establishment of draft pick protection. Crabtree has become the fourth top-10 pick in the past eight years to hold out into the regular season. Cornerback Quentin Jammer signed with the San Diego Chargers after the team’s week 1 game in 2002. Offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie didn’t sign with the Minnesota Vikings until Nov. 1 that same year. And quarterback Marcus Russell missed the season opener for the Oakland Raiders in 2007. So a simple question was posed: In light of threats about Crabtree re-entering the draft in 2010, would personnel men be in favor of adopting some form of Major League Baseball’s practice, which awards an additional draft choice to franchises which failed to sign a first- or second-round pick the previous year.

The answer? A resounding no, with all seven men coming out strongly against the idea.

“We shouldn’t become a league that rewards failure,” said one NFC North executive. “Why would I want to end up with a lower pick in [a subsequent] draft because another team couldn’t sign a player? … We’ve had very, very few [holdouts] like Crabtree, and fewer times where a player actually went back into a draft.”

The last first-rounder to sit out an entire season was Kelly Stouffer, drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) with the sixth pick in 1987. The former Colorado State quarterback had his rights traded following the season to the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent five seasons.

——————————————————————-

Year in and year out , once the NFL Draft has taken place . It seems teams take an indeterminate period of time for them to get their picks signed and off into training camp. And with suggestions now being made by many within and outside of the NFL . That there ought to be a rookie salary cap. It does merit the argument that something like this ought to be part of any discussion between the NFLPA(Players’ Association) and the NFL. But with the upcoming collective bargaining agreement about to be a matter of contentious negotiations. Whether or not, this will become a part of any discussion between Roger Goodell and chief union executive DeMaurice Smith, remains to be seen. And one doubts that will be atop of either party’s agenda.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1242" title="Michael Crabtree makes his presence felt" src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/michael-crabtree-makes-his-presence-felt.jpg?w=350&h=233" alt="Michael Crabtree makes his presence felt .
The inner sanctum of the NFL is so distrustful of the union and it’s also vice versa with regard to union and its feelings towards the NFL hierarchy. Certainly one would like to think that there is some common sense within this sea of uncertainty. But the way that the NFL and the union conducts their business at times does leave a lot to be desired. One would like to think that there’s room for negotiation wherein they can resolve their issues. But with both party’s not prepared to give ground at least on appearance . It’s hard to see a welcoming outcome that would befit all.

At this juncture for the San Francisco 49ers and their dealings with Crabtree and his agent. If they’ve not been able to sign the player before the start of the season . Why would they still want to sign him now with the season already underway ? It is not as if he’s of any benefit to them – having not been at all of the team’s training sessions. At the same time one has to look at what his once supposed potential teammates are thinking of this whole scenario. Is he in-fact a team player or more about himself ?

The thought was that with the acquisition of Crabtree the organization would be back on track make some sort of a showing within the AFC West division. Where the likes of the Arizona Cardinals , the reigning NFC champions alongside the Seattle Seahawks and St Louis Rams make up a division that’s often thought of as the last outpost of the NFL. Seemingly there , but not everyone is enamored with what’s taking place there.

As to the scenario now being played out between the player , his agent and the San Francisco 49ers. One can’t help but feel that this all could have been avoided had the lines of communication really been clear from the beginning. But from where I sit, the whole thing is beyond belief and remarkably stupid. Whether or not one can apportion blame on one side or the other can be determined by what has taken place so far. But for all sense and purpose this has been of the NFL’s making from the outset. It’s just that they’ve failed to take note of what has been happening with regard to NFL rookies and their never-ending demands by way of their salary needs. Somehow, somewhere and at some time in the future they’ll have to say ”….enough is enough !”

What proposals if any would you like to see concerning this matter ? And how best do you feel that it can be resolved ?

They’ve spent in excess of $350 million to acquire a cabal of world class soccer stars. That being said , it’s by no means a guarantee of success in the often volatile world of domestic soccer. Much less, for the premiere club soccer tournament in the world – the Champions League.

The Swiss side were never really that bold on offense but they made use of the legitimate chances that came their way.

And with the game now out of the way. They can now return to the rigors of the Spanish League domestic competition. There’s no doubt that this victory has given the team a definite boost of confidence. And now comes the sterner test for the team and that’s to maintain that consistency shown in their defeat of the Swiss side. There’s nothing more telling than when a team coming off a resounding win then falls back to earth with a lackluster display. With the team’s triumvirate of stars all having solid performances. It’s hoped that they’ll be able to replicate that form in their return to domestic competition in the league.

The two goal outburst by Cristiano Ronaldo to go with his allround display, was all that the Real Madrid fans could ask for. And it paid off in with the dividends of also seeing Kaka and Raul ably abetting the Portuguese , World Player of the Year, in Cristiano Ronaldo. The glaring talk when one deals the precocious talent of Ronaldo , has been that he’s never been able to produce on the grandest of stages. But if anything it has been the player’s complacency and the fact that he doesn’t always challenge himself to do better. We’re in awe with those moments dazzling brilliance. But then soon after we’re wanting to lambast the player for sometimes not trying harder. But were he on your team would you be willing to sell him in the expectation of getting something better ? There aren’t many players today with the talents of Ronaldo playing the game at his level of consistency. Isn’t any wonder that the Spanish giants were willing to pay Manchester United in excess of $140 million to avail themselves of his services ? His compensation package with Real Madrid makes him amongst the highest paid soccer players in the world. And the untold riches in terms of endorsements will almost certainly make him amongst the highest earning sport’s personalities on the planet.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a successful Champions League debut for Real Madrid, scoring twice Wednesday night in a 5-2 victory at Zurich.

“I never feel pressure,” Ronaldo said. “I just work to score goals. I scored two and I’m really pleased for that, but the important thing is to win games.”

Manchester United, his former team, won its opener 1-0 at Besiktas, and AC Milan gained a 2-1 victory in heavy rain at Olympique Marseille.

The reigning FIFA player of the year, Ronaldo scored on free kicks in the 27th and 89th minutes of the Group C match, with the second going in off goalkeeper Johnny Leoni, who tried to clear it with a punch. Real Madrid, a nine-time champion, also got goals from Raul Gonzalez in the 34th, Gonzalo Higuain in first-half injury time and Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez in second-half injury time.

“We must not lose concentration,” Real Madrid coach Manuel Pelligrini said. “There are always things to improve on but I’m happy we scored five goals.”

Xavier Margairaz converted a 64th-minute penalty kick for Zurich, which also got a goal on Silvan Aegerter’s header one minute later.

“Real was for sure a little bit in fear of us. At 3-2 anything is possible,” Leoni said. “If they want to win the Champions League they will have to play better.”

At a Group B match in Istanbul, Paul Scholes scored with 13 minutes remaining for Manchester United, the 2008 champion.

“It was difficult,” United captain Gary Neville said. “They create an atmosphere over here like no other country.”

And with the Spanish domestic league season just underway. It’ll be interesting to see how Real Madrid fares in domestic competition. As of late this team hasn’t won anything of merit on either level. With untold tens of millions of dollars at their disposal they’ve gone out of their way to try and buy themselves out of trouble. It has seemingly left the club in something of a financially precarious situation. Although club president Florentino Perez has tried to allay those fears by publicly addressing the issue. Stating that the club is financially sound and that they can meet all of their financial obligations.

With the Bernabau Stadium , the team’s home venue seemingly filled to capacity for home games with their vociferous and impassioned fans. Now is the time for the Spanish giants to try and reclaim their mantel as the best team in Spain. An opinion that might not be shared by the likes of FC Barcelona or Atletico Madrid . Two other popular teams that have had success at the domestic and European club competition level. It has become a titular struggle however between the triumvirate as to who is in-fact the best team in the land. Though you could thrust at least three or four other amidst the argument and try and make a case for them also. But as of now the standings within La Liga places Barcelona , Real Madrid , Valencia and Athletic Bilbao atop of the division with six points apiece -two games played.

Real Madrid’s roster is littered with star power and it would be considered a tremendous blow after the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and former Liverpool player, Xabi Alonso if this team were to fail under the auspices of their coach ,Manuel Pellegrini. Who is a proven commodity as a coach. But in the pressure cooker atmosphere of the Bernabeu and the vapid fans and the club’s seemingly unabated appetite for success. The Galacticos had better be at their very best this season on all fronts. If not, then the merry-go-round in the changing of management , executives in the boardroom and in the roster will once again be front and center in the Spanish press. As they’ll be calling for the heads as to whom they deem appropriate when failure once again surfaces for the team. Never-mind what the fans may well think.

It’s not only Cristiano Ronaldo who has got to prove something but the entire Real Madrid organization from top to bottom ! It is now a far cry from when this club reigned supreme on the domestic and European soccer stage. Baited breath now awaits as to the next chapter for this team.

Unless I’m mistaken , NASCAR’s regular season schedule has now come to a halt. And we now have the final-four postseason races for the 2009 season , that ends with the sport crowing its Sprint-Nextel Series’ Cup champion. And for all of the hoop-lah created by the sport and its fans. The tension that they’ve tried to build up has been about as suspenseful as being read the story of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. And while I don’t doubt the immense popularity of the sport across the country and seemingly across various demographics. It’s easily recognizable that the sport has now reached its zenith in terms of its popularity domestically. Now as the sport’s hierarchy seeks to further its presence on the global front. We’re led to believe that the sport can gain some further traction and resonance with a new-found fledgling of true budding NASCAR fans.

Juan Pablo Montoya of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing .

It has done its very best to lure the ever growing Hispanic market into the fray and with the popularity of Juan Pablo Montoya -his accessibility and the fact that he’s qualified for the final stages of the postseason. It bodes well for Brian France and Mike Helton , who oversee the sport under the NASCAR banner. And though it would be doing NASCAR a disservice in being critical of in their drive to lure fans of ethnicity and in particular the African American race within the sport. It’s been something of an uphill battle for the sport’s hierarchy thus far. They initially went about this haphazardly .Albeit , that they now have NFL star Randy Moss , who’s competing in NASCAR , as an owner in one of the lower echelons of the sport- the Truck Series. He’s had some semblance of success within the series and his fervor and passion for the sport hasn’t gone unabated. His Randy Moss Motorsports team has been at the forefront of NASCAR’s drive to lure the fans of color to the sport. And in particular those of the African American persuasion. And at the same time NASCAR also has its very own diversity program in place- which is proving to be something of a success .

<img src="http://abritishman.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/randy-moss-and-david-dollar-of-randy-moss-motorsports-inc.jpg?w=420&h=310" alt="NFL star , Randy Moss (right) and business partner , David Dollar of Randy Moss Motorsports Inc pose alongside the #81 Moss Motorsports Chevrolet during the announcement of his vehicle's entry in the Craftsman Truck Series .
As I alluded to earlier NASCAR went about trying to lure the African American fans with about as much aplomb as as would be befitting a group that they’ve been oblivious to in recognizing their many contributions to the sport over the years. And it most certainly didn’t initially help their cause when the interest shown by former NBA star Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson was summarily brushed aside with their feigned interest in Johnson’s wish to enter the sport as an owner. Communications and PR wise it was an immense blunder on NASCAR’s part. But they’ve learnt from those mistakes and continues to do their utmost to make all fans welcome to the sport.

Randy Moss discusses his passion for NASCAR on ESPN’s sports magazine program E:60.

As to NASCAR’s winding down to its regular season schedule and the upcoming postseason events. Well , there’s been about as much excitement created-as that of watching paint dry. Granted, the sport has its colorful cast of characters. But in all honesty , without its most popular Dale Earnhardt Jr not competing in the postseason. The ensuing events will create about as much excitement as watching a performance of Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson lip syncing to one of their odious pop songs. The fans of the sport will no doubt tune in for the events as they take place and even in this dire economic climate. The faithful fans will turn out in some quantity to cheer on their very own. But as it’s been widely acknowledged that the sport has been seeing a decline in attendance for many of its events at the Sprint Cup level. The feeling is that some changes will have to be made with regard as to how NASCAR determines it champion in its highest echelon event. They’ve tinkered around with this system since its inception. And yet it has not been to everyone’s satisfaction. Though the drivers have seemingly remained mute on the topic. The fans for their part in general have accepted it up to a point. But there have been those who’ve voiced their displeasure as to the competitiveness and veracity of the system.

There was a case at one time, where one could state unequivocally that Shaquille O’Neal was one of the most dynamic athletes in the NBA. In his younger years the fifteen-time All Star was also viewed as a dominant and some might opine an athletic individual. Nowadays, that would most definitely be the furthest thing from the truth. O’Neal, never one not to allude to his own perceived greatness. In truth however, over the last five years , he’s been doing it all with smoking mirrors. OK, it’s agreed he’s won with Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. The latter of whom, made a much greater contribution in the Miami Heat’s effort to win its only NBA championship-than O’Neal,, himself, is prepared to acknowledge. Granted ,he made the guarantee to the Heat’s fans that he’d secure them a championship. But having done so, he outstayed his welcome and inexplicably became something of a pariah amongst the fans and organization in Miami.

Shaquille O’Neal takes on the NFL’s Ben Roethlisberger and tries to prove his worth as a football player. Tonight’s episode of his show -you will get to see O’Neal go up against multi- Olympic champion swimmer , Michael Phelps in the pool.

After his sojourn with the Phoenix Suns, where his domicile with the team brought about some excitement amongst their fans. But added very little as to the team’s competitiveness and hopes of making the postseason. O’Neal now finds himself on his way to Cleveland to play alongside the ‘anointed one’ - LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. And now there’s the added incentive for Shaq to play alongside James and guide this team to its first win of an NBA championship. It has to have been the primary reason that , the franchise’s owner, Dan Gilbert and GM Danny Ferry made the splash to acquire the player. With the clock ticking on James and his desire win a championship with the franchise . And the very fact that he’s not yet prepared to address his future with the team as to whether or not he’ll stay or pursue his career goals elsewhere. This season will be make or break for the Cavaliers-as well as for both ,LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

O’Neal in the ring with former world boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya.

Last season’s disappointment of being dispatched by the Dwight Howard led Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA postseason ,was a bitter pill to swallow for James and his teammates. And the thought is with the addition of O’Neal . It will be enough to put the team over the top. But much of that will be predicated upon O’Neal’s wish to be first, a team player and at the same time defer to James. Never-mind that O’Neal’s health and fitness will come into play. And even with his performances with the Suns having been somewhat lackluster. There is the strong belief that this may well be all the motivation he needs to prove the naysayers wrong as to his declining form and zeal for the game. But I for one wouldn’t bet on it. Shaq’s been mailing it in and the whole world knows it ! And the very fact of the matter is , he has been robbing several franchises blind with his antics and his lack of professionalism when it comes to the game !

LeBron James talks about his new teammate Shaquille O’Neal and the expectations ahead for the duo.

Now we’ve been regaled with his laughable efforts to prove that he’s an athlete who can perform at the highest levels in certain sporting endeavors. His ABC reality show ‘Shaq vs.’ is about as welcoming a respite as having teeth pulled without the use of novacaine. It’s embarrassing not only for O’Neal but also for the athletes participating in the facade. O’Neal as always , the consummate class clown but even the class clown eventually has to grow up and act with maturity. Something that O’Neal has failed to exude at this juncture. For the athletes such as Albert Pujols, Michael Phelps ,Oscar De La Hoya, Kerri Walsh and Ben Roethlisberger , amongst others. It may well have been fun to be around Shaq and to have participated in the concept. But in actuality unless they were very well compensated by ABC and the thought of raising their profile alongside Shaq was deemed to be necessary. The endeavor has been an entire waste of time. Was there anyone actually watching ? So much so , it’s understandable to me why ABC would want to place this piece of garbage on the network. It can remind us why , we are appreciative of real athletes who can consistently perform at the highest level. Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t done that in years . And that’s why when it comes to the silly season we’re asked to put up with more than the human condition can bare.
