Rivalries When They Actually Mean Something Can Be Enthralling …………..
It’s been said that a rivalry that’s of a competitive nature brings out the best and the worst instincts in all of us. We’ll cheer on our heroes and boo our rivals . But nothing that we could ever envisage can be as enthralling as seeing to goliaths of a sport collide in a ring. And nowhere was this more evident than last night when WBA welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto faced challenger Antonio Margarito for his title and the right to viewed as the best welterweight boxer in the world.

This match brought together the unbeaten Cotto viewed by many as the next great superstar of the sport against a dangerous foe in Antonio Margarito. And for Margarito this would prove to be a chance to legitimize his status as one of the most dangerous boxers in the world. Both fighters are classic fighters in the Latin American mould. Cotto the boxer , stylist and supremely confident in his abilities. Margarito an assassin when given the chance to show his prowess in the ring. Though not considered a consummate artist in the ring . He’s capable of being as dangerous a fighter as any fighter would dare want to face, albeit that they’d be doing so most certainly at a risk to their health.

In their bout held at the Las Vegas Grand Garden Arena in Nevada , Cotto put on an exhibition of boxing that was as exiting to watch as it was it was exhilerating. With both fighters going toe to to toe not wanting the other to gain an advantage. And whilst fights of this pedigree aren’t often witnessed. For the fans in attendance this was more than a bout about pride. Here we had the Puerto Rican warrior in Cotto facing a antagonist in Margarito who was fighting for the pride of Mexico. And with the anthology of boxing of the fighters who’ve represented these two countries over the years in the ring. They have brought over the years brought us some thrilling fights. And those fights have brought us the likes from Carlos Zarate, Julio Cesar-Chavez, Salvador Sanchez, Felix “Tito” Trinidad, to name but few amongst others.

Margarito and Cotto proved to us that this welterweight title bout would be no different, with no man relinquishing quarter throughout much of the fight. And if the ending of the bout was unexpected. The start may have led us to believe that we were in for something just as spectacular. Throughout much of the 11 rounds that the fight took its course much of what many of us witnessed was the pride , honor of Mexico and Puerto Rico on display at stake from both fighters. That being said these two fighters put on a display that was as exciting as anyone could’ve envisaged. Cotto’s record (32-0, 26 KO’s) and Margarito’s (36-5, 26 KO’s) obviously would constitute a match that was as seen as enticing as only the true purists of boxing could wish for. Fights of this pedigree aren’t usually fought at this level anymore. And when they are they usually end up being a catalyst for mediocrity .

And whilst no one believes that this fight sets the standard for things to come it does give us a clear picture of the welterweight division and where it now stands in terms of supremacy. With the alleged retirment of titlist Floyd Mayweather. It now makes it abundantly clear that the list of candidates hoping to take over the mantle as the best within the division now is becoming a little clearer. With Adrian Berto recently anointed the WBC champion , Margarito the now the holder of the WBA’s version of the title and the IBF title vacant. Paul Williams is the holder is the holder of lightly recognized WBO belt. Margarito now stands head and shoulders above any of his peers within the division who are belt holders. His record alone bears this out and now with this emphatic win over Miguel Cotto by an eleventh round TKO.

Cotto for his part may well envisage a rematch against Margarito down the line. And with both fighters sharing the same promoter in Bob Arum. It has to be said that another big rewarding payday can’t be out of the question for both fighters. They’d have a great deal to live up to if they’re to sustain the excitement from this first bout. Those in attendance must’ve loved the spectacle of the bout and one would deem that those watching via HBO PPV had to have felt the same way. Both fighters put on a display that did their country’s heraldry proud. Unfortunately though there had to be a loser in this title bout. But the winner here were the fans of boxing who had the privilege of witnessing this bout.

So for any of you aren’t enamored with the sport. Take some time to review what’s been happening within it. Although the the heavyweight category has become something of a comedy of disasters. In the lighter divisions there’s an abundance of quality fighters who are keen to seek the recognition they’re not often given or are ever able to attain.
