Rohypnol The Drug of Choice …………….

Rohypnol The Drug of Choice

It’s strange and disturbing and it’s happening at an alarming rate but it’s something that’s overlooked by the public and press alike. Here in the state of Florida which has become the epicenter for college students once Spring Break comes around.

Here’s a rather disturbing fact , in the cities of Daytona Beach , Panama City , St Petersburg , Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale over the past five years , there has been over 375 sexual assaults. Of those less than 36 have brought about or led to the indictment and prosecution of the defendant. Something of a minuscule number don’t you think ? If you think that is an alarming stat ? Then consider this , in large part those indictments came about because the District Attorney’s office in each wanted a plea deal in order to gain a verdict. Of those cases that did go to trial the defendants were found guilty with the overwhelming DNA evidence playing a part in the case being brought to satisfactory conclusion on the part of the prosecutors .

Florida sees rash of spring-break rapes ….

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., March 17 (UPI) — Six alleged rapes in Florida have occurred during the first week of spring break, Daytona Beach police said.

One rape allegedly occurred in a men’s washroom at Ocean Center on Sunday, during which the victim could not get a good look at her attacker because he held her hair while he raped her, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported. No one has been arrested in that incident.

Reported rapes usually are on the rise in March because of spring break, the News-Journal said.

“All of last year we had a total of 41 sexual assaults. Here we have six in one week,” said police chief Mike Chitwood.

In another incident, 26-year-old Donco Mitrov of Daytona Beach is accused of raping a woman who was drunk when he met her. He allegedly plied her with more alcohol and raped her twice in the hallways at a beachfront hotel, police said.

Mitrov was charged with sexual battery and released from jail on $20,000 bond, police said.

The other four rapes happened behind a beachfront restaurant, at another hotel, and one after a woman met a man at a nightclub and invited him to go with her, the police chief said.

What I find alarming about this all is that there are people out there wanting to excuse the inexcusable as it concerns Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger . As many of you may now well be aware, the Milledgeville PD and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation -(GBI) have halted their ongoing investigation for the time being. This came about because the alleged victim in the sexual assault for which the NFL player is the primary suspect has failed to attend an appointed interview with the investigating officers. Now we can attest to the fact the player has shown poor judgment but what is now clear is that people are still looking to defend the indefensible as it concerns the player. Is anyone really of the opinion that each and every allegation thus far is without warrant against the player ? How many times is it that Roethlisberger expects us to believe that each time the sex was consensual ? There are only so many ways that a cat can be skinned ! And there are only so many times that a lie can be spun in order to create the perception of truth.

Why the Spring Break Rape Total in Daytona Beach Will Keep Rising …

By David DiSalvo of Associated Content

The first official week of Spring Break was a violent one in Daytona Beach, where six rapes were reported in as many days. Bearing in mind that only a fraction of total rapes are reported to police, the actual number is unknown but no doubt much higher—and we’re only a week into the season.

Of the six reported rapes, all but one involved alcohol and/or drugs. Three of the victims were unconscious when assaulted. Only one person has been arrested so far.

A volatile set of factors combine in Daytona this time of year (and, of course, not just in Daytona). Take the impulsive and risk-prone tendencies of teens and early twentysomethings, combine with an atmosphere marketed as a massive free-for-all, and add generous amounts of alcohol and drugs—and you have a story that for many isn’t going to end well.

Daytona isn’t an especially safe city aside from Spring Break, but with the annual pilgrimage it becomes one of the least safe cities in the country. According to cityrating.com, the incidence of rape in Daytona Beach is 3.39 times higher than the national average. The occurrence of all violent crime is 3.09 times higher than the national average. 84 out of every 100,000 people in Daytona are raped annually.

The website Neighborhoodscout.com, which ranks how safe cities are around the nation, gives Daytona a 1 out of a possible 100. These statistics aren’t helped by the fact that during Spring Break, the normal population of around 66,000 swells by anywhere between an additional 100,000 – 200,000 people.

Last year, 41 rapes were reported to Daytona police during Spring Break. If the FBI is correct and only 37% of rapes are reported, then we can assume that more than 120 women were raped during Spring Break at Daytona Beach last year. All signs indicate that this year is going to be worse, and the victims are getting younger. One of the first six victims was 14 years old.

The NFL and the Steelers’ front office have been about as proactive in dealing with this situation as the government has been in dealing with the financial meltdown of the economy. Asinine utterances such as there’s ….” an upswing in productivity shows that the economy is in good health “. Well if that upswing is no more than one tenth of one per cent , then that can hardly be considered a healthy sign. But figures can be spun any way that you want it to be spun. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and his union counterpart NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith have remained ominously silent while this and under such disturbing behavior has gone on around the NFL. But what else ought we to expect from a league whose primary concern is to make money and very little else ? It’s not as they’ve ever viewed crimes against women committed by their members as something that warrants their undivided attention. The number of players within the NFL that we’ve either seen involved in cases of either domestic violence or sexual impropriety in some type of crime may seem minimal but it has become more common place than you think. Primarily because many of the incidents end being unreported or in a number of cases where it has gone to trial the defendant has either pled guilty to a lesser charge in order to avoid jail time. Somehow in some way when Goodell then deems fit to get involved he ends up making the situation seem somewhat more unbearable with his lackadaisical response.

In many of the cases where the female victims in the sexual assaults were involved . The drug ‘rohypnol’ was used in the preponderance of the cases. And rohypnol or more commonly known as roofy’s was placed into the beverage of the victim. In most cases it was alcohol , which in of itself is enough of an inhibitor . But here in lies the dilemma, many of the students who embark upon Spring Break , congregate in the aforementioned cities as well as places such as Cancun , Acapulco to have fun. Well , when fun then becomes the nightmare of sexual assault , an arrest and the violation of a victim. What’s left for many to debate about ? Two families will forever be intertwined by the events that have taken place.

And while there’s no suggestion to believe that Ben Roethlisberger instituted anything of that nature with regard to the allegations. Let us not pretend that things of this nature do not happen. Repeatedly we’ve either read or seen such events being reported. And unfortunately in many cases the police are sometimes unable to press charges because the victim is either unable or unwilling to face her attacker and make a positive identification.

My condemnation of Roethlisberger stems from the asinine decision made by the player. The same player who placed himself in harm’s way in a motorcycle accident , lied to his coach and the organization about the events that took place. Never mind the fact that the player broke the law in the operation of the bike. The operation of the vehicle without a valid license and registration. And people believe that there’s a cause for concern. When your character comes into question because your behavior indicates that your grasp of the truth is to lie. Then it would suggest that the player believes that he can act as he pleases without being at fault. Now comes the real issue if Goodell and Smith can’t even be proactive in dealing with the actions of its members . Then how the hell can the fans or the public at large have faith in the NFL ? Never mind the fact that we’ll tend to see the travesty that’s perpetrated within the justice system when the prosecutors tend to plea down crimes that are the most heinous in nature.

As a bye note Washington Wizards’ guard Gilbert Arenas will only serve 30 days incarcerated at a halfway house after having pled guilty in his gun violation trial . Somewhat of a light sentence don’t you think given the gravity of the charges faced ? Arenas if you remember brought with two loaded and unlicensed weapons to the Wizards’ locker room at the Verizon Center in Washington , DC. An altercation took place between he and teammate Javaris Crittenton and the two brandished their loaded weapons at each other. Arenas’ lawyer Kenneth Wainstein in his deliberations to the District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin , stated that the player …”is remorseful for his actions and that he’s now turned his life around”. Make of it what you will but Arenas in a recent statement bragged about the fact that he had as recently six months ago, had as many as 500 weapons in is home. Many of them semi automatic and unlicensed. Did I miss something here , concerning Arenas and ‘his demeanor’ ?

But alas, this is the society we live in , where idiot athletes are idolized for all of the wrong reasons ! As Barkley once said ……….”I’m not a role model “. Perhaps someone ought to tell Charles we know that but how the fu_k are we suppose to view them ? When they themselves go out of their way to create the image courtesy of their managers, agents and endorsers to foment an image that’s pristine and above reproach. ? Take note Tiger Woods you’ve done some very bad things and still are doing some bad things . Like you’re still in complete denial Tiger !

NB: Stories reported concerning the rapes that’ve taken place in Daytona Beach, mirrors what is now going on statewide and across the country , at the various spots that students congregate for spring break. Bear that in mind as the stats shown here , are only for this year so far.

The Damage Has Been Done …………….

The Damage Has Been Done

Well I’ve put it beyond me in terms of the men’s NCAA basketball championships bracket . I’ve seen Kansas bite the dust. When I say , bite the bust they bit it like they’d been kicked in the head by a bunch of ‘gang bangers’ . And so with it , went my bracket as well. Come to think of it President Obama’s bracket bit the dust as well and do you think that there’ll now be hell to pay as he tries to rip the Republicans ‘a new one’ over health-care reform ?

Spring Training is in full swing and the hype seems to be over Cincinnati Reds’ pitcher Aroldis Chapman and the Washington Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg . Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve no doubt that both of these pitchers are extremely talented . But I simply don’t put much store in what they’re presently doing until they’ve played their first games in ‘the majors’ as in ‘the big leagues’. And no doubt both of the organizations would rather not have them called up right away as it would essentially start their arbitration clock ticking , as to their future worth.

Steven Strasburg (L), the overall first pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, is presented with his jersey by Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (R) after being introduced at Nationals Park August 21, 2009 in Washington, DC. Strasburg, a right handed pitcher from San Diego State University, signed with the Nationals earlier this week wth a record contract for an amateur player.

Both ball clubs have essentially struggled over the last few years to show some semblance of competitiveness. And their struggles have been borne out by the declining attendance as their respective home games. But that asides is anyone of the opinion that both Chapman and Strasburg will be the apparent saviors of their respective clubs ? Over the last few years the National and Reds have simply underperformed and underachieved. Much of it has been brought by their poor play and even worse, the poor personnel decisions made by their respective front offices. The struggles for both organizations will manifest itself in the upcoming season . It’ll be interesting to see how Cincinnati Reds make their way within the NL Central . There they’ll stare down the likes of the St Louis Cardinals , Houston Astros , Chicago Cubs , Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates . And I for one would certainly like to think that the Reds’ organization has come a long way from the days when it was under the ownership of Marge Schott ! Was it her or her dog Schottzie that was actually behind the majority of the personnel decision making at the time ?

The late Marge Schott former owner of the Cincinnati Reds is seen here with Eric Davies. Do you get the impression that Davies was rebuffing Schott's sexuall advances at the time ? As we all know what Marge's alleged feelings were to minorities by enlarge. This may well have been a way to make amends. LOL,LOL, LOL !!! photo appears courtesy of Ernest Coleman ..................

This upcoming season I believe that the Reds as a team will be hard pressed to contend with the likes of the Cardinals , Cubs and Brewers within the NL Central . And the pressure will most certainly be on the Reds’ coaching staff and in particular team manager Dusty Baker . A great regular season manager given the right on-field talent but one can see his failings magnify when he’s got to deal with marginal talent and then making the right strategic decisions. Much like of that of the team’s he’s managed over the years , success just seems to be beyond him as a manager.

With the ownership group of the Reds led by President & CEO Robert H Castellini and GM Walt Jocketty . It is expected the owners are looking for signs progress and improvement as to the team’s competitiveness within the division and across the National League (NL) . If there isn’t a marked improvement then there’s liable to be changes not only on the team roster but also amongst the coaching staff.

As far as I’m concerned the idea of baseball being played in the nation’s capitol , is like making the case both legislative houses of the government conducts its business in an orderly manner. We know it’s simply not true. Both the House of Representatives and the US Senate has essentially become a place for ‘the meet and great’ , then showing about as much common sense as Ben Roethlisberger in a room filled with female college co-eds . The Washington Nationals in the NL East , have simply become ‘the doormat’ of the division. Were this a wounded animal then it’d have been put out of its misery long ago ! But alas, the MLB hierarchy led by Bud Selig believes organizations such as this, are still vibrant for the game. But then again we’re all entitled to our own opinions aren’t we ?

Billionaire Ted Lerner as the largest stake holder in the organization alongside GM Mike Rizzo really do have their work cut out for them in trying to make the Nationals not only a viable concern but also a competitive one on the field of play. Manager Jim Riggleman and his coaching staff have got to turn things around in terms of the team’s prospective fortunes. And while on paper the team does appear to be one that should things fall the right way for them then they should be able to make some noise within the division as a whole. But I fear that the fortunes of the team won’t be what they (owners) and their fans had hoped for.

In this this day and age pinning one’s hopes to a single player expecting them to be the organizations’ savior. Well that doesn’t always tend to work out all that well for the player or the party concerned. It’s a collective team effort that’s needed by both the Nationals and Reds . And it appears to have been lost on the front offices of both organizations. The damage was simply done the moment they opened up their check books for the financial outlay made to both Chapman and Strasburg. As good as they appear to be during Spring Training. There’s nothing to suggest that both of these players will be able to reproduce that same form the moment that they make their debuts in a regular season game. But if the hopes of the organizations in question are to be realized then not only will Aroldis Chapman and Stephen Strasburg have to be atop of their game. So too will their teammates if they and their respective teams are to have a modicum of success, commercially as well as competitively.

Hail Caesar We Who Are About To Die Salute You

Hail Caesar We Who Are About To Die Salute You ….

For the life of me I can never understand it ! The pundits make their asinine claims anoint players who’ve never ‘ran a down’ , ‘tackled an opposing player’ or ‘passed a ball’ in the NFL . But yet they’re anointed playmakers or the ‘future face’ of a franchise. Such asinine statements, albeit, that this is just one person’s point of view, does seem to weigh heavily by some of the predictions being made not only the bloggers I’ve read recently, preceding the upcoming NFL Draft . But many of them seem to be basing their projections solely by what they’ve either heard by just listening to the tv pundits on television. If the likes of Mel Kiper and Todd McShay were really that good. Then they would be indeed holding down a position within the ‘front office’ of any one of the ’32 NFL franchises’ around the league . But that is most definitely not the case ! Instead they make their living proffering up opinions, for which they’re both highly paid by ESPN . Makes me kind of glad that they’re not offering financial stock tips or any other type of financial advice. It’s bad enough as it is seeing the likes of Tim Geithner , Larry Summers and Ben Bernanke offering advice on the US economy . And they’re meant to be professionals.

Perhaps it was me but I seem to remember the proclamations that were being made about Brady Quinn as a quarterback while he was at Notre Dame . What was it that the pundits were seeing that clearly made them think that Quinn was about to become a prodigious talent within the NFL ? I mean for God’s sake, under Charlie Weis’ tutelage , the guy has hardly advanced wherein , you’d even now deem him an ‘average quarterback’ in the NFL . The player has failed miserably while with the Cleveland Browns and with a hapless coach such as Eric Mangini , in his first year as the team’s coach , last season. Quinn fared no better, as he and Derek Anderson shared the signal calling duties. If there was a more ‘inept duo of quarterbacks’ within the NFL last season , then I certainly must’ve missed seeing them. Because this duo not only performed abysmally but they brought a whole new meaning and standard in ineptitude to the game, with their poor play.

And now with the Browns having traded Quinn to the Denver Broncos , where he’s meant to challenge Kyle Orton > for the starting position on the AFC West division team . One wonders what the thought process was within the Broncos’ front office and the thinking with Broncos’ coach Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders ? Now we know that McDaniels was of great assistance to Tom Brady while he part of the Patriots’ coaching staff under Bill Belichick . But I’m not naive enough to think that McDaniels is about to turn Quinn into a world beater . He may well be good but not that damn good ! & Somehow , I don’t see the Broncos faring much better than their 8-8 record reflected from last season ! The division remains the San Diego Chargers to lose , should they decide on imploding. Or heavens forbid , should the unthinkable d happen and the Oakland Raiders see fit to actually become competitive under Tom Cable’s lackluster coaching skills. Never mind the fact that they’ve still got the ungainly JaMarcus Russell as the team’s quarterback. One would’ve thought by now that Raiders’ quarteraback’s coach Paul Hackett would’ve given up on a lost cause ? But apparently not , as he still plods away trying to teach the player , the simplest nuances of the game.

Now as much I’ve admired Mike Holmgren as a coach and in particular his years with the Green Bay Packers. I’ve now got to question his notion that in acquiring Jake Delhomme as the Browns’ new quarterback. As team President & Head of Player Personnel , he is now in charge of all roster decisions as it concerns the team. And for Delhomme in the declining years of what been a moderate NFL career. I for one don’t view him as someone who can lead the Browns to success that their long suffering fans have yearned for , for years. It has been bad enough that over the past decade they’ve made only one postseason NFL appearance. But now they’ll have to view a less than fleet footed and accurate passer , seemingly lead this ‘team’ against the might of the AFC North as well as the rest of the NFL ?

For Holmgren to stake his career on Delhomme is tantamount to career suicide at this juncture. I can only surmise that Dr Jack Kevorkian will be on hand to administer that lethal dose of morphine as and when ready , once the Browns’ season starts to head south ! For Delhomme however, every cloud has a silver lining as he will become the highest paid player in the NFL for 2010-11 season. Having been ‘cut’ by the Carolina Panthers . The player was still owed $12 million for the season and having signed a two year $14 million contract with the Browns at $7 million per season . That equates to $19 million guaranteed right out of the box without Delhomme having played for his new team. Kind of makes you wonder how he’ll spend his time counting it all, doesn’t it ? There’s a saying that…”there’s a sucker born every minute”. I think that with the Browns “the suckers” have been in existence there for eons !

David Carr seen here as in a Houston Texans' uniform . The player drafted overall #1 by the team in 2002. He has bounced around the NFL having not been able to secure a starting qb position . The 49ers will become the player's fourth NFL franchise in his 8 year NFL career

How is it that someone like David Carr can bounce around the NFL and get paid handsomely, for simply doing nothing ? At least the ‘corporate blowholes’ who wrecked AIG and Citigroup were actually reeking havoc on not only the companies under their custody but the whole entire god-damn US economy. Carr , now being given the chance will more likely than not , ruin the San Francisco 49ers and whatever legitimacy some may well felt about Mike Singletary being a decent coach. The player has been signed by the team as a backup to starting QB Alex Smith . Oh my God, is the one and same Alex Smith that has struggled to acclimatize himself in the NFL , after departing from Utah ? Well I never, wonders will never cease. And there were those who prescribed to the fact that the now departed Niner, Shaun Hill was the better quarterback of the two ? Well, I suppose that’d be dependent upon what you were judging their abilities against ? There are only so many ways you can skin a cat and there are only so many ways to try and sort bulls_it from cow dung . At the end of the day we all know that the smell emanating from both tends to be the same. It’s just a matter , as to whether or not you’re amenable to a certain type aroma , isn’t it ? But it shouldn’t really matter because in the NFC West , the cream will rise to the top and the sediment in the form of the crap, will still remain at the bottom of the barrel , as far as the division goes !

We’re often told that the NFL quarterback is very much like a gladiator on the field of battle or a Praetorian guard in the Roman legion. By the maneuvers that have been taking place as of late within the NFL. The quarterbacks mentioned are nowhere near as menacing, as those famed ancient warriors we’ve read about or having seen on film. These guys are more inclined to make you think of them as being nothing more than a passing resemblance of a make belief soldier. The problem is , they’re being financially rewarded at great expense of their respective teams and the credibility of the coaches and general managers. But as I’ve stated in the title we can view them as the gladiators and can surmise that they too live by the credo ” ………..Hail Caesar We Are Who About To Die Salute You “

A House Divide Against Itself Cannot Stand ……….Bring On The Golden State Warriors

A House Divide Against Itself Cannot Stand ……….Bring On The Golden State Warriors

Below in part is the transcript of a speech given by Abraham Lincoln . It was perhaps one Lincoln’s best known speeches given after his acceptance as the Republican state candidate in Springfield Illinois chosen to run against Democrat Stephen A Douglas. Date June 16th 1858.

” Mr. President and Gentlemen of the Convention.

If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it.

We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation.

Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented.

In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.

I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided.

It will become all one thing or all the other. ”

Click here to read the speech in its entirety .

The Golden State Warriors have had their struggles this season and their record of ’18-48′ within the Pacific Division of the Western Conference is reflective of that. Some 30 1/2 games behind the division leading Los Angeles Lakers (49-18) . The Warriors have had their growing pains as they try to assimilate themselves behind the court presence of rookie Steph Curry and the undoubted talents of guard Monta Ellis . Perhaps until Curry’s arrival the team’s best player ?

Pau Gasol throws the hook inside against the Warriors smaller frontcourt. Gasol had 26 points and nine rebounds in a close Lakers win.

However, in light of this all there seems to be unrest within the Warriors’ organization . For coach Don Nelson despite the pleasant respite of having a player of Curry’s talents available to him . He has also got to tend with the bruised ego it appears of Ellis , who has started to complain about not getting enough of ball when on the court. Now far be it for me to suggest that Ellis is out of line but I’d have thought anything that seemingly makes your team better, is a great deal more than appearing to look atrociously god-damn awful. It’s not as if him hiking up shots all night long and padding his stats improves the effectiveness of the Warriors as a team to begin with ! You get the impression that without him the Warriors would be garbage. And perhaps he’s right , but with Curry playing alongside him that stench of the perceived garbage dissipates somewhat. Monta Ellis needs to ‘shut the hell up’, play the basketball and earn his keep. Because anymore of his whining and the Warriors’ front office will be looking send his a_s off to outer Siberia or to a NBA franchise willing to take the player off their hands.

Oakland, Calif. (AP)—Kobe Bryant is happy to be done with the Golden State Warriors so the Los Angeles Lakers can prepare for what they might actually see come playoff time next month.

Bryant scored 29 points and the Lakers dominated the boards to overcome a turnover-plagued night and beat the Warriors for the ninth straight time, 124-121 on Monday night.

Bryant said there was nothing to learn from a game where the Lakers committed 24 turnovers, outrebounded Golden State 56-25 and allowed 100 shots before holding on at the end for the victory.

“You’re not going to see anything remotely close to this in the playoffs,” he said. “Not even close. There’s nothing you can gauge in this game. You just get out of here with a win and move on.”

Pau Gasol scored 26 points, Andrew Bynum added 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Lamar Odom had 17 points and 12 boards for the Lakers, who have won three straight following their first three-game losing streak in more than two years.

The Lakers led by 11 late in the fourth quarter but barely held on for the victory. It wasn’t sealed until Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis missed 3-pointers in the final seconds. Ellis’ last-ditch attempt bounced on the rim three times before falling aside at the buzzer, completing a 5-for-23 night.

“I thought it was going in,” Warriors center Chris Hunter said. “It looked like the invisible man tipped it away at the last second.”

Curry scored 29 points for the Warriors, who have lost seven of eight. Coach Don Nelson remained six wins shy of breaking Lenny Wilkens’ record mark of 1,337. The Warriors have only 16 games remaining this season, meaning Nelson’s quest for the record might be pushed into next season if he is brought back as coach.

The Lakers took advantage of their decided height advantage with two 7-footers in the starting lineup against a Warriors team whose only true post player is Hunter, a former NBA Development League player.

But with a season-high nine turnovers by Bryant and eight more from Bynum, the Lakers struggled to put away the quicker Warriors.

Warriors’ owner Chris Cohan and GM Larry Riley have sought their best to place a good product on the field of play, in conjunction with Don Nelson. After the years of disdain and seemingly being ridiculed by in large part, many of their own fans and others within the state. It looks as if finally they may well be heading in the right direction. But the last thing that they would want is anything to ruin what appears to be a stability within the roster. But given the notion that, Ellis believe he’s the face of the franchise, rather than the talented young rookie. You get the impression that there might be some turmoil ahead for the organization and for the Warriors’ coaching staff . Prima-donna athletes come a dime a dozen but the ones who would defer to a younger and more talented teammate . Well, that becomes something of a rarity nowadays. Especially in today’s ego driven world of the NBA. And much of that has to do with how the players are marketed and how the NBA hierarchy has gone about as an entity in getting its brand noticed on a global scale. It’s no longer about the teams themselves but more so, about its superstar. Doubt my word ? Perhaps the words that can be directly attributed to LeBron James should be a clear indication of that. ” I want to be global marketing icon”. Perhaps that would be dispelled somewhat and be of benefit to LeBron, if he were to win something of note first. Like an NBA title and ring , rather than just having an Olympic gold medal and league MVP award merely adorning his trophy cabinet at present. But alas, this is how David Stern and the NBA hierarchy feels is the best way to market its brand on a global scale ? By the way , do you think that the Warriors might actually have fans in such far flung away places such as in Guangdong, China ? Inquiring minds need to know ?

For the Warriors with a mere 16 regular games left in the season. This will be about assessing the roster and seeing discerning the good, from the bad, from the indifferent. And overall what will be of benefit to the organization as it proceeds forward. But in my own assessment, they may well also need to look at the coaching staff. It seems clear that Nelson has taken the team as far as he can. It’s not as if his remaining there, will lead to further leaps forward. He’s done as much as he possibly can . But it appears that Cohan and Riley will retain the veteran coach and his staff for the foreseeable future. As to how the fans may well view this all is a matter of great debate and conjecture.

Warriors' coach Don Nelson (left) is seen here alongside the Team GM Larry Riley at Oracle Arena ,Oakland during an NBA game . Nelson remains just 23 wins shy of Lenny Wilkins' alltime wins as an NBA coach . Wilkins total stands at 1,332 victories spanning a 35 year coaching career. Ellis without his undoubted skills remains something of an enigma , not only to the fans but quite possibly also to the coaching staff. With his prodigious talent, I ask myself why in hell’s name would he now want to take on the role of a ‘villain’ and ‘alienate’ himself not only from the fans but quite possibly some of his teammates ? It hurts not only his image but creates division within the locker room amongst the players. And that’s of no benefit to the team or the organization , itself. ‘A house divided cannot stand by itself ‘ and with Ellis’ immature behavior in that context , it creates something of a dilemma and morass for the Warriors as an organization. Do they retain a player who when on his game makes them competitive ? Or do they jettison him , in order to stave off what almost certainly would lead to division amongst the roster and tension within the organization as a whole ? If Nelson really wants to show his ‘true worth as a coach’ , he and his coaching staff led by assistant coach Keith Smart had better sit Ellis down and explain to him what it means to be not only a ‘team player’ but also ‘teammate’ as well . It’d be of benefit to not only Ellis but also to Nelson and the entire organization.

The team gave a spirited display in 124-121 , in a 3 point loss to the Lakers in game that the Warriors had within their grasp. Games such as this, shows grit and mental fortitude but they fell short to a Lakers’ team that seems destined to make their presence felt within the postseason of the Western Conference playoffs. The Warriors can only aspire to seek such a place at some point in the future. But for now, for this young team, it is actually about learning the nuances of team discipline and what it takes to win consistently. Something apparently that Monta Ellis has yet to learn as a player within the NBA. Does anyone actually believe that he’ll learn it anywhere else ? For Ellis’ teammate, Steph Curry, his future appears to be bright as he embarks upon his own career within the NBA and to write his own legacy.

The Most Interesting Man In The World ? But Who To Your Mind Is The Most Reviled Man In Sports ?

The Most Interesting Man In The World ? But Who To Your Mind Is The Most Reviled Man In Sports ?

The Dos Equis commercial suggesting ‘the most interesting man in the world’ is viewed an intellectual and a man of charm and wit. That being said who to your mind is the most reviled man in sports ?

We all have differing opinions as to who that person or persons may well be. I mean there are so many people, one could choose from, not only past but also present. And not only at the professional level but also from among the college ranks or even perhaps from the executive side of sports also. The cast would be endless much like one of those damn Hollywood blockbusters that were made during the seventies that the moguls would thought be a big money maker merely because the list of stars would make the movie all the more appealing. Problem was , in large part the plot was so poor that the only thing the movie might have going for it , were the special effects. With the most reviled man or woman in sports, the only thing each has going for them may well have been the fact that they were conceited , liars , cheats and more often than not , they simply just didn’t care.

From my own perspective I’ll just give you list of athletes and I executives who I find as such, contemptible and leave it for you to make a decision as to whether or not you’re in agreement.
They’ll be in no discerning order nor are they ranked as to how I may well feel about them individually.

Most of you know that I find the duo of Bob DuPuy and Bud Selig of major league baseball (MLB) about as affable as a dose of dengue fever. What these two idiots alongside Donald Fehr , the former Executive Director of MLBPA have done to the game of baseball has been about tantamount to perpetrating a financial fraud upon the fans of the game. Many feel that the players are equally to blame. And they are right but at the same time three highest ranking officials have merely shun their responsibility for many of the ills that the game brought upon itself , merely by standing aside and simply doing nothing. From the steroid era on down to the financial meltdown that ‘not even’ Selig or the ‘owners’ are fully willing to acknowledge at present .

Still keeping with baseball , how can one overlook Roger Clemens or for that matter Jose Canseco , Mark McGwire , Alex Rodriguez , Barry Bonds , Rafael Palmeiro, Miguel Tejada , Manny Ramirez or any of the other players that have been implicated in the steroids scandal ? Offering apologies and then trying to suggest that it was all a mistake is simply stupid. A mistake is normally an act that one does when simply unwittingly knowing the consequences of the actions. For many of these player it was simply being done to get ahead and at the same time gain an advantage . But the windfall at the end of it all were the financial rewards. Anyone who thinks otherwise need only to view the fact as to how several of the players profited from it all.

And when it comes to ownership within the game of baseball . Can there be any worse an organization than that of the Baltimore Orioles , Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates ? The owners of each of the three ball-clubs in question have been about as keen for success as the Republicans would be in seeing the Democrats be in power for another two more terms in the White House .

David Glass as the owner of the Royals , has shown as much about as much business acumen for the organization as has been shown by the executives that ran Enron. Hard to believe that Glass was at one time a senior executive at Walmart ? But that’s exactly what he was prior to becoming a board-member and then owner of the team. How the hell the Royals have survived under his tenure is hard to believe. Glass and GM Dayton Moore have struggled to make the team competitive . And what little success that has been attained has been minuscule to say the very least.

Each and every time I see the Orioles , I wonder why they bother at all to turn up for the start of the regular season of baseball. It’s not as if owner Peter Angelos possesses the will to see the organization become competitive within the AL East , much less within baseball to begin with. With he and GM Andy McPhail , the American League has its very own version of Laurel & Hardy. The thing is , the legendary comedic duo were simply paid to be funny and were damn good at it ! In the case of Angelos and McPhail , they just aren’t funny but the whole world of baseball just seem to keep on rolling over with laughter when they suggest that they want success for the team and their fans. If things carry on this way for much longer then Camden Yards will soon become an elephant’s graveyard. It’s not as if there’s anything exciting going on there to begin with, in terms of competitive baseball being played !

We know simply know that the Pirates are there just to make up the number. It’s like a game you always know what the outcome will be as it concerns the organization. They will have their moments in the sun but like the meteorologists tend to state, there’s a chance of cloudy weather with intermittent showers and thunderstorms. That pretty much sums up the Pirates’ season year and year out. And unfortunately for their fans that’s not about to change anytime soon under the present ownership of Bob Nutting and his management team headed by GM Neal Huntington . To say that the Pirates have been starved of success would be to suggest that the victims of the unfed child victims were merely malnourished . Suffice to say , that for the Pirates’ fans success has been hard to come by. They try their darnedest to be competitive within the NL and it each year it all seems to no avail.

With PNC Park merely a decade old, one has to wonder if it was in anyone’s best interest to have the facility built when there’s really little of note said to be happening there by way of a competitive product being placed on the field. It’s now becoming clear that Nutting and Huntington simply aren’t sure what direction that the ballclub is heading in. And neither are the coaching staff for that matter. As they all seem to be stranded on the vessel known as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They say that rats tend to desert a sinking ship and the survivors are left to fend for themselves. The rats here are both Neal Huntington and Bob Nutting who simply won’t admit that they’re both in over their heads and are unwilling to sell the team to someone who’d be more versed in turning things around. Instead they’d rather lead ballclub into obscurity and baseball purgatory.

As much as David Stern has his array of admirers and detractors and they are many. I have to admit that I find him condescending and disingenuous ! Now don’t get me wrong, he might just be the most astute executive there has been in professional sports over the past twenty five years. And that is with due respect to Pete Rozelle . What Stern has been able to do with the NBA in the twenty five years that he’s presided over the league as its commissioner has been astounding. But at the same time his autocratic rule and the fact the league’s hierarchy has been less than transparent in many of its innermost dealings does leave a great deal to be desired.

We can understand that were it not for the years of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson , then to be followed by the Jordan years. The league would not be what it is today , a multi billion dollar business with tentacles now reaching across the globe. And for all of that we can be thankful to Stern , no doubt. But at the same time Stern has simply tried to make it more about him and the fact that he feels he’s on an equal footing with the players and in particular the superstars within the game. And while no one doubts the contribution and hard work of the commissioner. Need we be reminded of the fact that this is the same commissioner whose actions with the departure of the Seattle Supersonics to Oklahoma City to become the Oklahoma City Thunder , left a number of people rather disturbed by the league’s actions. Stern and the Thunder ownership group led by Clay Bennett , were less than forthright with the city of Seattle . But at the same time the Sonics’ owner Howard Schultz who’d sold the franchise to Clay Bennett should’ve known the problems that would be forthcoming. Especially given the length of time it’d taken in reaching an agreement with Bennett’s syndicate group. But it doesn’t hide the fact that Stern and Bennett were quite prepared to circumvent a written an agreement with the city even when there was a clear understanding that the franchise had to live up to the terms of that agreement.

Stern can come off as being quite ‘the nice guy’. But more often than not he’s use to playing the role of Machiavelli. And then he’s always the one to make himself look the savior and hero when the willing ear of the press and television media is in midst.

Mike Tyson has his own version of a ‘happy meal’. And here I thought cannibalism in the United States was a thing of the past ?

As much as I love the sport of boxing and though I’ve now become an ardent follower of MMA . I have to admit that I thought I’d seen it all within the sport of boxing. But boy , was I wrong ! The infamous night when ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson saw fit to take make a meal out of Evander Holyfield’s ear , still has me wondering whether or not Tyson was just simply angry or completely mad .

Now everyone has their own version as to what went on and the reasons why Tyson reacted the way that he did. But by my way of thinking , boxing as an art form was about the use of hands fists as a weapon. I don’t remember the Marquess of Queensbury prescribing to the fact that the use of biting an opponent was a legitimate tactic in the ring. But then again I might be wrong that given the fact that prior to title fights being regulated to fifteen rounds and then to twelve rounds . Fights would usually last until the last man in the ring was left standing. I can only surmise that Mike Tyson on that infamous night had other ideas and wanted to make quick work of Evander ? On a lesser note , how sad is it to see how far both of these guys have fallen ? Tyson through his own self inflicted wounds and problems. And in the case of Holyfield , he now fights in order to put food on the table for his numerous children and the alimony that he has to pay to his several ex-wives. These two men combined over the course of their storied careers earned in excess of $550 million . And today , neither has anything to show for it , at all.

Marion Jones (center) is seen here alongside Tulsa Shock coach Nolan Richardson (Jones' immediate left) and Team President Steve Swetoha (Jones' right) . photo appeares courtesy of Associated Press / Tim Rogers ................

Disgraced Olympian Marion Jones is now back in sports having joined the WNBA , where she’ll play for the Tulsa Shock . Now don’t get me wrong , Jones having paid her small debt to society got off pretty lightly. And she’s deserving of a second chance. But then again , the US Justice Dept seems to pick and choose the battles it wants to win and then points out that it is indeed meting out justice. What a crock of fecal matter ! You have none violent offenders who’ve been sent down for more time than Jones served in a Federal penitentiary . And less we forget, Jones was part of a massive check fraud cashing scheme that went across several state lines . Albeit, that she pled down to a lesser charge of lying to a federal investigator. The main reasoning behind the Fed’s targeting of Jones wasn’t just the matter of her use of steroids and then lying about it. It was also the fraud itself and others involved in their investigation. We know that the runner and her ex-boyfriend Tim Montgomery another disgraced track star were amongst the names mentioned on the BALCO list. The two of them also were involved in the fraud check cashing fraud for which Montgomery was indicted , charged, tried and found guilty.

Jones finally admits to something that she should’ve done a long time ago. Especially in light of the fact she was threatening to sue anyone who stated that she had been using steroids during her track career.

That asides, Jones’ notion that having paid her debt to society , she doesn’t need to seek redemption indicates that she’s learned nothing from being incarcerated. Never mind the fact that her contrived apology after admittance that she’d lied to not only the federal prosecutors , law enforcement officials but also to high ranking officials of the IAAF , USTAF and the IOC . Never mind the fact that she still sought empathy from the public after all of the cheating and lying.

Now as I alluded to earlier in the piece there are numerous names and choices that we might as add as to who we may deem to be the most reviled person in sports. I could still add a few more names but it’d simply go on and on. So I’ll now leave it up to you to chime in with a few of your own and perhaps we might comment and discuss them on their merits ? Thanks as usual for the continued support as it’s gratefully appreciated !

What I’m Listening To At Present ! The Roots ………..

What I’m Listening To At Present ! The Roots ……………

For those of you who know me from our days within the Fox domain blogging our hearts away on what we then might be of interest to others. Well, you all might know that I’m not cut from the same cloth as other English guys you may well have come across in a social setting. For one I don’t hold true to the concept that we’re all pasty faced English guys who are all about soccer , fish & chips (quaint English delicacy- palatable to some but not to others),cricket and rugby. My interest far exceeds those boundaries in sports, socially and politically. I strive to be appreciative of both sides of an argument when it is being properly framed. But the one thing I for one can’t tolerate is just sheer downright stupidity in any form. Granted , we all have our foibles , some good and some bad . But that’s what makes so unique as human beings. We’re all so different from one and another and that’s to appreciated , rather than be denigrated and look down upon !

When it comes to music , I think I’m as eclectic in my tastes as it comes. My influences range from classical to r & b, to jazz old and new , reggae , rock , rap, hip-hop , African and Far Eastern music. I think when you’re appreciative of different artistic cultures . It offers you a somewhat more appreciative look at the world in general. That’s not to say that art , in terms of music that should be one’s lone guide or choice. But given the fact that the arts no longer seems to be appreciated by a government that is now more prone to showing its true colors in terms of bi-partisanship and ridding itself the arts and certain areas of education. It makes me wonder what the legacy will be for our descendants in the future ?

Musically speaking , as I alluded to earlier , I love various formats of music and its ever changing genre from one moment to the next. While I’m at work and poring over business stats and other various pieces of work related information. I’ll always have some music playing in the office. Today , my colleagues will have to bear the burden of having to listen to The Roots . To read their bio just click here . Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the content matter as much I have done ?

Things To Be Happy About After This Sporting Weekend ……….Or Is There Anything At All To Be Happy About ……?

Things To Be Happy About After This Sporting Weekend ……….Or Is There Anything At All To Be Happy About ……?

Thankfully the Winter Olympics’ coverage by NBC is over and Bob Costas can now do something more fruitful with his illustrious Emmy winning career. Don’t get me wrong , with the 800 hours of coverage that the network provided us with, there was a great deal to be had from watching the coverage in Vancouver, British Columbia. But at the end of the day , a great deal of it was all for nought. You had commentators and analysts at NBC who were either unprepared or simply nowhere as knowledgeable as the station would have us believe. Who was the idiot there, who stated that Lindsay Vonn ‘is the greatest female Alpine skier of all-time’ ? Hey moron, do some research and you’ll find that Vonn is nowhere near as great as Annemarie Moser-Proll . And the constant hyping up of several home grown athletes who at one time or another failed to deliver. Well , in the end it only goes to show how devoid the plot lines were to these games. Appolo Anton-Ohno is now the most decorated US winter Olympic athlete ever. Wow ! Well , that tells me a great deal but what does that say about the feats of Eric Heiden ‘who won five gold medals’ at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in 1980 ?

It’s safe to say that with the Summer Olympics in London , in 2012, we ought to expect more of the same and once again that’s to be expected at the next Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. One wonders who NBC will look to build a storyline around then ? Michael Phelps , perhaps ? Well if that’s if the swimmer still has the inclination to compete ? Especially given the fact that at present in most people’s eyes he’s far more amenable , family friendly than golfer Tiger Woods. But that’s another story for another time and day.

Well the NFL Combine the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis came and went. To an extent we didn’t really learn anything that we didn’t already know. A few pleasantries were to be had, as a number of players who didn’t take part , still made themselves available to scouts , GM’s , managers and coaches for the interview process. Hopefully, a number of those players will prove themselves worthy and are able to communicate with a great deal of confidence. So much is placed on the athletic endeavors of the combine that people tend to forget the players also have to show their intellectual prowess as well. But that appears not to be of the greatest concern to the convened press or the tv pundits in attendance. I wonder what Mel Kiper and Todd McShay will have to say about the whole process ?

As former diet-fitness guru Susan Powter use to say …..’stop the insanity’. Whatever happened to her by the way ? I mean she was once over 425 lbs and slimmed down to under 130 lbs ?

Can someone explain to me how is it that the New Jersey Nets had their way and slapped the Boston Celtics around like a hooker who’d allowed one of her John’s a ‘freebie’ ? I’m not saying that the victory was bad but they got slapped with an almighty ‘pimp slap’ ! ” Yo’ bitch take that” ! No real explanation from Doc Rivers , as to why his team got their asses hung high like one of Michael Vick’s former pitbulls after they’d been tortured with an electronic cattle prod. Suffice to say that the Nets felt good after the victory , whereas the Celtics in their home venue were totally embarrassed. The result 104-96 was enough to suggest that the Celtics were simply unprepared. With their respective records it was hard to detect which team was actually the ‘5 win team’ and which team had amassed 36 victories . Subsequently, the Nets have fallen back to earth as they’ve once again fallen into their same old bad habits ,………. losing . The Nets lost were 4 point losers on their home-court in an 89-85 loss to the Washington Wizards.

I’m not about to suggest that apart from the top five teams in the Eastern Conference of the NBA aren’t at all that bad. But is anyone really interested at all in watching those other ‘woefully inept teams’ within the conference ? Please, David Stern , stop trying to sell me on the NBA brand and product at present ! It’s about as desirable as wanting to own a Toyota Prius ! Like the vehicle, when it’s out of control , it just aimlessly heads nowhere while placing your life in danger. The same can be said of the play within the Eastern Conference amongst the lower rung teams, as they’re proving to be extremely harmful to one’s health.

It’s not often that you want to wish a former and much beloved athlete all the best in a new found endeavor. But in this case, it becomes an exception the rule . Michael Jordan , formerly a minority stake holder in the Charlotte Bobcats , over the weekend bought the controlling interest in the team from billionaire entrepreneur , Robert L. Johnson . The billionaire owner was keen to sell the franchise to stave off the continual financial losses that he’d assumed since his first purchasing the team, then known as the Charlotte Hornets. Now mounting something of a presence within the Southeast Division and chasing a playoff berth. The Bobcats with the eighth best record in the Eastern Conference , are looking to garner their first playoff berth in their guise as the Bobcats. And for coach Larry Brown having the former Tar Heel alumni , as his new boss is a welcoming and sobering thought. The fans no doubt will now rally around to show their support for Jordan and the team , as they seek success.

When they say ‘….one and done’ . What literally are the implications behind that statement ? Because at this juncture that’s the situation now facing Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver Terrell Owens . After a less than productive year with the AFC East team . The front office led by General Manager Buddy Nix has informed the player that a new contract won’t be tendered to him and that he’s now free to seek ‘free agency’ on the open market. So once again, the traveling sideshow embarks upon another journey as across the languid NFL terrain.

Owens and his agent Drew Rosenhaus , will do his level best to ‘sell him’ as a ‘still productive player’ who can contribute to a team seeking postseason experience and a wealth of maturity. Scratch that last statement, as ‘maturity’ and Owens don’t belong in the same sentence much less , the same time zone. LOL,LOL,LOL !!! But rest assured that no stone will be left unturned by Rosenhaus , even if it means him having to cajole and coerce teams and GM’s around the league to give his client a chance. And it’s not as if Owens hasn’t been given enough chances down the years to begin with. But much like cancer tends to spread through a body when it’s malignant. The same can be said of Owens and any NFL franchise where he’s said to have been over the course of his professional career. As to which might teams might be prepared to show some interest in the player , that remains to be seen. But you can be sure that there are bound to be one or two teams that will show some interest in the player. As to what demands specifically , will be made by way of a salary from the player. Let’s just say that Owens can’t expect to be paid ‘top dollar’ at this stage of his career.

I read with a great deal of interest how Curtis Granderson , the New York Yankees’ latest acquisition is looking to fit in with the team. Isn’t that like being told you’ll no longer be seated in the outhouse because you’re now welcomed in the big-house where all the guys bask in luxury ? Now we all know that for the Yankees and the organization it’s all about winning and everything else is secondary. General Manager Brian Cashman has set about retooling the roster in order to be more athletic , diverse in terms of the talent and less dependent upon an aging roster.

The AL East and its plethora of teams will be taking aim at the bulls-eye that immediately now becomes a target on the Yankees’ back. And for the likes of the Boston Red Sox , Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles . Each of the teams in question will be looking to take down the reigning World Series champions. But I’d remiss in suggesting that the Orioles are going to be competitive within the AL East. Their front office , there, have essentially obfuscated their responsibility in making that a priority and their main prerogative over the years. The long suffering fans have had to come to Camden Yards and witness a team that is about as competitive as a ham sandwich. And in team owner Peter Angelos , you may well have someone who’s said to be completely oblivious as the club’s inherent needs. Is it any wonder that they continue to languish within the bottom rungs now of fan support and have little by way of any tangible success over the last decade.

The Yankees will be the presumptive favorites to win it all again this year. And in the National League (NL) will also be looking to take their shot at the Yankees also during inter-league play. But to my mind the only way that the Yankees can lose this year is through their own complacency. And I don’t see that either team captain Derek Jeter or the team’s manager Joe Girardi are quite prepared to let that happen. And for Granderson having been acquired by the Yankees from the Detroit Tigers . He’ll now get to see how an organization of the of Yankees’ stature goes about replicating and maintaining that success. For the Tigers, this season they will be hard pressed to make their presence felt within the AL Central .

OK , so who amongst you are so sure as to who the favorite will be this year , to win the men’s NCAA basketball tournament ? To see the so called presumptive favorites drop like flies as of late in terms of results. Well it’s like seeing an insecticide or repellent be placed amongst the men’s rankings. Sitting atop of the heap at present are Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse Orangemen . Two weeks from today , is anyone of the belief that they’ll still be there ? In all likelihood given the inconsistency and the frequency with which the teams have been falling. The answer has to be an emphatic …..no !

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two fighters have seen their proposed title fight fall through they are now still chiding each other on with some rather unsavory taunts . photo appears courtesy of Associated Press / Kevin Thorne ........................

On one last note, can the sniping stop between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr ? These two buffoons and their representatives have cheated the fans out of a boxing match-up that the whole world has been waiting for and eagerly wanted to see. So please stop it with the cheap ass snide remarks just shut the f_ck up once and for all ! The both of you have become tiresome and a complete waste of the print media space that’s still being bestowed upon you both !
