It can’t have escaped everyone’s notice that recently former major leaguer Jose Canseco was readily dispatched by former NFL player and Golden Glove amateur boxer , Via Sikahema in the first round of a celebrity charity boxing match. For Canseco this was an embarrassment so voluminous that he may well felt that he’d gotten himself into something that he’d wished he hadn’t.

Sikahema knocked Canseco out in the first round with referee Al Huggins having to intervene to save the former major leaguer from further punishment during the bout. The fight itself took place in the Bernard Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City , New Jersey. Atlantic City has been known as one of the great fight cities in North America when it comes to the sport of boxing. However on this occasion one can seriously doubt that this celebrity bout could be taken in earnest. Canseco the self avowed exhibitionist and alleged martial arts practitioner who claims that he holds a karate Black Belt 2nd degree. Whatever those claims might’ve been it was clear to see that this just might’ve been the one time that Canseco’s claims were somewhat economical with the truth. His athletic prowess as a martial arts practitioner let alone a boxer was nowhere to be seen.

And for those in attendance hoping to see a bout that at least would appear to be entertaning. They were left with a spectacle of two grown men whose best sporting achievements were from an age when they may well have been known for their prowess in their chosen athletic endeavors. Whatever one might feel about the sport of boxing and celebrity bouts that are put on for public fair. It can be said that this particular bout took on something comedic in value.

The 6′ 4″ 265lb Canseco was outmatched by Sikahema who clearly took this bout seriously . Though it can be said that many of these bouts when staged they’re usually done with regard to providing a modicum of entertainment for the fans in attendance. Even if they were perhaps the most ardent of fans when it comes to the sport of boxing. Canseco the avowed exhibitionist and self effacing publicity hound may well have viewed this as a way of gaining further notoriety. Sikahema for his part did all that could’ve been asked of him even if his opponent was unable to live up to much of the prefight hype.

The fans showed their displeasure with the result perhaps more so out of derision and anger by throwing projectiles into the ring. The projectiles in question were their plastic cups of unwanted beer. When one considers that they might’ve been better off consuming the alcohol and relinquishing their sobriety altogether. The choice made to demonstrate their anger in such a way may well have been their only course of action. For Canseco’s part the embarrassment suffered at the hands of Sikahema may well be slightly more embarrassing the claims made by him with regard to his sexual conquests. Say nothing of which all of the apparent allegations made by him concerning many of the major leaguers who he claims may well have been part of the steorid era has brought him a certain amount of notoriety and claims that he’s sold out many of those players he might’ve once considered to be friends.

As to Canseco’s future one can only imagine that it won’t be as a boxer or in any other combatative endeavor that takes place either in a ring or on a mat. He’s clearly not the man he claims to be. Steroids or not, if anything he’s a caricature of the persona that he tries to portray for the public and his fans alike. God knows he’s done enough to make himself something clearly that he’s not. Milk does a body good Jose but you made the choice that steroids would be better. Somehow you may not want to recant and you may well feel that you’ve got nothing to apologize for. But then again you’re now the man who’s stating that there’s a place for steroids to be used legitimately within sports. I’m wondering if you’re quite prepared to let a child make that same choice ?
