Phew I’m Glad That’s All Over !

Well the sporting weekend was filled with a litany of stories that may well have found its way into your time spent resting and taking anyone of a number of events on offer. Both the NBA and NHL playoffs are underway and as those episodes play themselves out the fans there I’ve no doubt will be thoroughly entertained. Now I’m not nor have I ever been that much of an enthusiast when it comes to the game of hockey and I doubt I ever will be ! Suffice to say that when it comes to being physical in such a way when the opposing players are throwing down and landing punches like effeminate school girls I’d rather throw my weight behind a good mix up in a martial arts dojo !

In what is allegedly said to be baseball’s biggest rivalry the Boston Red Sox and their divisional arch rivals the New York Yankees met in a three game series which the Yankees hosted at Yankees Stadium . Having lost the the first two games 5-4 , 6-0 respectively the Yankees were looking to redeem themselves in Sunday’s game in front of a soldout crowd and a national cable broadcast on ESPN .

Much has been made concerning the New York Yankees this season and the frailties of this team in particular with their pitching rotation whom many believe to the team’s Achilles’ heel. If anything with both of the losses in question it simply wasn’t about the weakness of the pitching but also that the bats wents extremely cold for the Yankees . Last night’s game in light of the furore created by the team’s veteran catcher Jorge Posada has pretty much summed up how things could very well go for the Yankees this season .

Posada is having a brutal season batting a mediocre .165 , much to the dismay of the player and the coaching staff led by Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long . That being said it was somewhat inexplicable the way in which the player informed GM Brian Cashman that he wouldn’t be able to play in Saturday’s game. His excuse seemed to be contrived , with him suggesting that he was suffering from a back-ache and that his head wasn’t where it needed to be. Pardon me for saying this , but if you’re unwilling to suit up when it’s all on the line and your teammates are counting on you then you have no part being on that team ! Either Jorge Posada was genuinely hurt or he wasn’t but for him to take umbrage when Cashman made it public to the press before the game that he wouldn’t be playing , I find it rather naive on the part of Posada ! After-all it was his decision to withdraw from the team and not face their AL East rivals the Red Sox . Now in light of that , it now appears that there’s a great deal of friction and an apparent rift between the player and the upper levels of the executive heirarchy of the New York Yankees . This I believe is what tends to happen when things become contrived and the players who feel that they ought to be treated with deference from their peers within the locker room . Posada, if he’s to be seen as a veteran and an example to the younger players on this Yankees’ roster then he ought to act accordingly , and not like some infantile child who has had his pacifier taken away from him.

I’m not about to suggest that after this Sunday loss ( 7-5 ) which gave the Boston Red Sox a clean three game sweep in this series that the season for the New Yankees is now up in the air as that would be rather asinine ! The Yankees’ situation won’t be made any easier knowing that they now have to face a red hot Tampa Bay Rays’ —- team that has the best away record (13-5 ) in the league this season and whose confidence at a real high. Having lost that game to the Red Sox the Yankees saw their lead within the division erased with the Tampa Bay Rays now leading the AL East with a 23-17 mark with the Yankees two games behind and the Red Sox a mere 3 games behind the division leaders. Things are hotting up within that division and there’s a great deal to play for , nevertheless I do believe that it’s still too soon to write the Yankees off at this juncture but I do believe that the chasm that has now been created between Jorge Posada and the front office could well be irrevocably broken . With Cashman having stated that he’ll approach the commissioner’s office to see what , if any punishment can be levied against the player , you simply get the feeling that Posada could be on his way out with the Yankees unless there’s a contrite apololgy from the player to the organization. The chances of that happening might just be diminishing by the second given the demeanor shown by Posada and his own remarks in light of the series loss.

This two game series between the Yankees and Rays at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg , Florida could go a long way in telling us about the direction that both teams are now presently heading in. The Rays need to win and win consistently if they’re even to be thought of as legitimate contenders within the division much less a wildcard entrant or for that matter to have a legitimate shot at the World Series Series . It’s a near on certainty that the wildcard entrant from AL will undoubtedly come from the AL East unless there’s a major surprise to come from within any of the other divisions . At this juncture with how the teams are now playing nothing can be taken off the table as of yet .

I don’t know about you but with all the talk of the Miami Heat strolling their way to the NBA title this season , I’m so glad they were given that proverbial wake up call ! Last night in their conference finals game opener against the Chicago Bulls played at the United Center in Chicago showed us why the Bulls should be written out of this series based on their so called inexperience . Complacency I believe has already has set in with the Heat especially amongst the role players on this team !

The Miami Heat showed why there are still many flaws on this team none more so than on defense as the Bulls laid an almighty can of whup ass on the self absorbed Heat . This game may well have started off as a sprint with the Heat’s ‘Big Three’ looking to stamp their identity on this game . But as good as LeBron James , Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are said to be , on the night Luol Deng , Derrick Rose , Taj Gibson , Joakim Noah and Ronnie Brewer simply better , as the Bulls took the Heat behind the woodshed and fuc_ed them proverbially in the ass ! Statistically the Bulls won this game by being aggressive and simply beating up on the Heat on the boards (45-33) on both ends of the floor .

Inexplicably the Heat were simply no match for the Bulls and the idiocy came about even further when the Heat had six players on the floor during this game but somehow the officials , Dan Crawford , Michael Smith and Ken Mauer as incompetent as we’ve known the referees to be didn’t call a technical against the Miami . Inasmuch , I had expected the Heat to win game one I certainly didn’t believe that they would be upended and embarrassed in the way that they were on the Bulls’ homecourt . But as I alluded to earlier , there’s a complacency about this team that I don’t believe that Erik Spoelstra or Pat Riley can deny . I think that there’s connivance and a belief about the Heat that having beaten the Boston Celtics with effortless ease they may well have felt that they would walk the Bulls like a hot knife through butter. Well it’s game on bitches and you’re now going to be in for a hard fought battle and one hell of a war .

The result a 21 point defeat ( 103-82) of the Miami Heat simply ought to remind us all that we ought to also take note that the Bulls did also sweep the Heat in their regular season meetings 3-0 . And though one could allude to the fact that the Heat as a team weren’t playing cohesively as a unit you simply cannot discount those results as being a one off at all ! The Heat were beaten and albeit that the regular season tends to mean nothing at all once the postseason comes around , you can’t deny that this would be the last thing that Miami Heat would have wanted at this juncture . And that’s to be in a battle where they’re expected to win soundly ____ but instead they’re now in the midst of what could turn out to be guerilla warfare and they’ve simply shown that based on last night’s display they simply haven’t the arsenal to compete against their younger foes.

Chances Are It Won’t Work Out …………… But Then Again Who Knows ?

The one thing that has perplexed me since the trade deadline has been the play of the Boston Celtics and the decision made by the Boston Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge in the trading of Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson . Now inasmuch as we’re told that this was done to benefit the overall strength of the Celtics’ roster I think in large part that the trade has been to the detriment of the Celtics that has provided a slump in their fortunes where they’re now the third ranked team within the Eastern Conference sitting behind the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat .

=============================================================================

============================================================================

Slide show for your perusal .

Though the Boston Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers has stated that this trade was a necessity to give the team depth in strength I do believe that the decision wasn’t a prudent one and it has if anything made the team all the more vulnerable and susceptible in their chances of making it deep into the playoffs much less winning the conference finals or the NBA title itself. The Celitics’ Big Three of Ray Allen , Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in addition to point guard Rajon Rondo have been playing at a level not identifiable with a team that many thought if anything would be viewed as a serious contender for the conference championship as well as the NBA championship. Instead this team has struggled and the fact that Troy Murphy an addition to the Celtics’ roster was seen as an upgrade has me wondering what it is that Ainge was trying to do ! If anything the general manager of this storied franchise must feel that the front office and the ownership of Wyc Grousbeck and his partners who can’t be entirely happy with the current situation but as long as there’s a chance that the team can be thought of as a contender then they may well be satisfied with their predicament.

In the offseason after the playoffs has reached its culmination I do believe that several decisions will have to be made as to the personnel of this team in light of the age of the team’s “Big Three” of Allen , Garnett and Pierce , never mind the roaming mercenary on the team Shaquille O’Neal whose career of late has been one where he’s merely moved for the sake of the money , rather than what he says…… ‘ is the pursuit of a fifth NBA ring , having won four as well as multiple Finals’ MVP’s . O’Neal is no longer the once dominant center within the league and if anything his productivity has slumped over the past few years . Rivers may well feel that his playing a mere twenty to twenty five minutes a game will suffice in the Celtics’ quest for another title.

Last season’s quest where we saw the Celtics fall to the Lost Angeles Lakers </a. in the NBA Finals was one where the team having outplayed the Lakers throughout much of the series they’d would fall apart in game seven where we’d see Ron Artest perhaps play the game of his life and where eventual Finals’ MVP Kobe Bryant would show us why he’s amongst the game’s most accomplished players and has long been considered one of the best players in the game when it matters most , on the NBA’s grandest stage. If that wasn’t enough to show the Celtics and their fans why it is that they can’t afford to be complacent then the 2010 Finals was definitely indicative of that.

This season for the Celtics hasn’t been without controversy for the team with Kevin Garnett leading the way with his flare up with the Pistons’ Charlie Villaneuva in the aftermath of which Garnett would try to negate the response of the press with a rather trite statement concerning remarks made about cancer victims. Garnett has always been something of a lightning rod in terms of his on the court demeanor and often at times his apparent willingness to do whatever it takes to win even if there’s a question as to his sportsmanship.

As an offense the Celtics have struggled and though they’re often viewed as a defensive force it has been here where their struggles have actually manifested itself and much to the dismay of their fans and Rivers’ coaching staff . I’ve no doubt will make the playoffs but I’m not so sure that as of now that they can be viewed as the presumptive favorites to win the conference finals ! As good as the team has been throughout much of the season the loss of Kendrick Perkins may well be too much to bear for this team. You cannot simply alter the chemistry on a team thinking that you can make it better by bringing in players that in terms of their contributions simply have shown that they’ve no real heart. Ainge for his part has been reticent to address the reasons as to the team’s falloff prior to the trade and what it has meant overall.

If the Celtics are to actually make their presence felt over the remainder the regular season and in the postseason , then as of now , they will have to show a great deal more determination . And in terms of leadership then Garnett , Pierce , Allen but Rajon Rondo in particular will have to lead by example if there’s to be any chance of this team simply being in with a remote chance of winning the NBA title . Failure by the quartet to show some form of consistency in terms of their play then you might as well count this team out because they’ve become a mere shadow of what many believed they were capable of achieving .

The Eastern Conference has often been thought of as a conference where the quality of play has been somewhat lacking in quality of its play but if anything with a litany stars now within the conference there’s the feeling that they’re now capable of staying in touch with their counterparts in the Western Conference . Now it comes to the point where we’re going to have to ask the questions as to whether or not the hype created with the Miami Heat ….. will they be good enough to win it all ? Can Derrick Rose assume the mantel of Michael Jordan and lead the Chicago Bulls to unprecedented heights not seen since the Bulls were in their heyday under Jordan in winning six titles during a ten year span. Boston for its part will be looking to add to the legacy of Red Auerbach and Bill Russell the two names synonymous , most associated with success and what the Celtics have been about over the course of their history.

#23 Come On Down ………………

#23 Come On Down ………………

I’m still trying to figure out where it is that the Charlotte Bobcats and their erstwhile owner Michael Jordan appear to be heading . This team has become increasingly inconsistent and I do believe that as an owner Michael Jordan is merely living in the moment. All this from a player who’s a multiple league and Finals’ MVP winner within the NBA . We know of Jordan’s legacy as a player and his feats with the Chicago Bulls . With the mantel now being passed on to Derrick Rose it remains to be seen whether or not Rose will be the heir apparent to Jordan with the Bulls and their home at the United Center in Chicago.

Watching the Charlotte Bobcats I can’t but help feel that this team will struggle even if the happen to garner a playoff spot within the Eastern Conference . At 23-31 they currently hold the eighth and final spot in the conference but lie third within the Southeast Division headed by the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic . For his part Larry Brown having relinquished his position as head coach Jordan and the front office had to head in a new direction from a managerial standpoint. Brown’s successor is seasoned veteran NBA coach Paul Silas who has brought about something of a more of free flowing approach to the play of the team .

Jordan for his part relies heavily on the input given to him by Silas the coaching staff as well that of COO Fred Whitfield concerning personnel decisions with regard to the team. But in large part the final decision still remains his overall.

Inconsistency has been the problem for the Bobcats and even with the veteran experience of Stephen Jackson , Gerald Wallace and the supporting cast you simply get the impression that the this team is summarily going through the motions. I do feel that if the Bobcats are to prevail this season then much of what they aspire to achieve will come down to the decisions made by Jordan and the front office. I do believe that they need to make a trade by the deadline . But the troubling for the Bobcats would be who they’re prepared to give up on their roster in order to get an offensive threat in order to assist this team ? It’d be pretty safe to say that they’re out of the running in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes. And that scenario seems to be spiraling from the sublime to the ridiculous .

I’ve long suspected the real reason why Jordan became so intent on being an owner stems from the fact that he failed miserably as a general manager when he ran the Washington Wizard’s organization while Abe Pollin was the owner of the team. His well chronicled ineptitude in acquiring Kwame Brown as the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft . What transpired thereafter was enough to show us that Jordan’s acumen when it came to assessing and making the right personnel decisions left a lot to be desired. This time around with the Bobcats he does have well trusted front office personnel who seem to have been making the right decisions , albeit with input from the owner.

The Charlotte Bobcats much like a number of teams around the league will struggle to contend with the likes of the Boston Celtics , Miami Heat , Orlando Magic and Chicago Bulls , the four teams within the Eastern Conference that many believe will be contesting the conference semi-finals. That quartet as of now seems to be the presumptive participants for the semis as things now stand.

With the NBA All Star Game and the surrounding events due to take place over this upcoming weekend at the Staples Center , Los Angeles , California . The midseason showcase event is the NBA’s time to shine with all of its perennial stars there to be seen by the fans across the globe. NBA Commissioner David Stern for his part along with the game’s hierarchy will do their utmost to make sure the event is presented in the best way possible .

And for his own part I’m sure that Commissioner Stern is happy that Michael Jordan still remains a part of the NBA fraternity. He still is the most recognized face in the game even with the advent of such stars as LeBron James , Carmelo Anthony , Dywane Wade , Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin . Michael Jordan has and always will be the face of the NBA and for years to come . Without the era of Jordan and the Bulls the NBA would still be playing second fiddle to the baseball . If anything in terms of their business template they might just be the most well ran of the four major sports . And although the league faces a stiff upcoming obstacle with regard to the existing collective bargaining agreement between themselves and the NBPA headed by their Executive Director Billy Hunter .

Thankfully the negotiations between the two parties doesn’t appear to be as acrimonious between the NFL and NFLPA . There the chasm between the two parties appears to be as cavernous and as wide as the Grand Canyon . Both Roger Goodell and his union counterpart DeMaurice Smith have a great deal to mull over before the deadline comes about before the collective bargaining agreement is no longer in existence. It seems somewhat ridiculous that both parties who claim to be acting in the game’s best interest have seen fit to only meet twice officially behind closed doors over the last three months to try and hash out their differences. But then again should we have expected anything different between the two sides.

Stern , the league hierarchy and Hunter’s office have met regularly and have discussed their differences over the existing agreement and the concessions each side are said to be looking for. David Stern for his part and the owners have unsuccessfully tried to convince the union that the league has reached a dangerous precipice from which there’s no return unless they are able to make concessions. Stern contends that the league on target to lose upwards of half a billion dollars ($500,000,000)for the 2010-11 season . But herein lies the caveat to this all, the league isn’t prepared to open their books for public scrutiny . And even if the NBA for all sense and purpose is a private business concern many of the league’s teams are in fact the beneficiaries of taxpayers’ monies by way of incentives given when many of these teams to build or renovate their venues. You rarely hear a fan counter this argument but what surprises me is the very fact that they’ll shout to the heavens when they see that their monies are being misspent by their city , county , state and federal government.

And even now with the Obama —- administration , House and Senate fighting over the budget and federal deficit you can’t but help not hear the cries now coming from both the right and left of the political argument. But those very same voices when it comes to landscape of sports never question the why multi-millionaire and billionaire owners are able to circumvent the rules . But then again when you have the antitrust exemption that’s given to the major professional sports courtesy of Congress , it’s easy to understand why it is that you have corporate titans willing to pay big for a sports franchise and then use that as a major tax write off .

Once the season resumes after the All Star Game it will be interesting to see how teams such as the Bobcats, Minnesota Timberwolves , Cleveland Cavaliers , Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings proceed over the remainder of the season . We can all agree that the major contenders for the NBA title are all sitting comfortably at this moment in time but those on the lower rungs of the NBA ladder will no doubt have a hard time playing themselves into contention much less have a decent season by their own lofty standards.

How do you feel with regard to the Charlotte Bobcats and the direction that they’re said to be going under their owner Michael Jordan ? Do you feel quite possibly that they can contend within the Eastern Conference or are they still some years away from being legitimately considered to be contenders for an NBA title ? Also do you feel that the NBA will be able to have a working collective bargaining agreement in place before the existing one expires ? We do know that the NBPA has already considered decertifying themselves should there be a remote chance of a labor stoppage. As in doing so it would enable them (union)to press their case within the US Federal Court System in challenging the league’s right shut down the NBA’s operations .

A Shock To The System ……….

There are few things that tend to surprise in the world of sports but I was completely taken aback when I heard that Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan had resigned as coach to be succeeded by his assistant Ty Corbin . Sloan is third on the NBA alltime list of coaches in terms of victories . He stands third behind Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens two esteemed coaches in the annals of NBA —– history . Until Sloan’s resignation he had been the longest tenured coach in major professional sports currently. In his 23 seasons he’d been to the playoff nineteen times and posted 14 consecutive winning seasons (20 overall) as well as 14 straight appearances in the NBA Playoffs. He also went to the NBA Finals in successive seasons ( ’96-’97/ ’97-’98) with the Jazz losing both times to the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls .

In today’s NBA it is no longer about the team or the coach but simply about the players and in particular the superstars of the league . It’s he monster that has been created in light of the post Jordan era . This was the monster that was essentially created by David Stern and has long been the bane of the NBA . The fans no longer really identify with a team but more so with the antics of the stars such as LeBron James , Carmelo Anthony , Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal who look to carve out a niche for themselves in and outside the game. Jerry Sloan was old school and unfortunately for him his young budding superstar point guard Deron Williams is a player of this era where it’s all about me ,me , me and always will be about me !

The league now is a young man’s game and where the players themselves expect to be coached by coaches closer to them in age. Funny thing is the coaches that’ve been recipients of the NBA title as a coach have been those who’ve a great deal of experience and basketball acumen behind them. The Utah Jazz’s Jerry Sloan was never quite able to reach those lofty heights but their coach certainly made sure that the ride was most definitely worth it.

Given the fact that Sloan coached two Hall of Famers in Karl Malone and John Stockton you’d have thought that Williams would be more reverential of his coach . But if the stories are to be believed then the relationship between the two had been severely strained. That tends to be the case when your team has been struggling to win and where offensively you’ve simply become anemic. The Jazz have lost ten of their last fourteen games and their struggles will continue over course of the rest of the season. Williams for his part hasn’t given a public statement after his coach’s decision to step down but you simply get the feeling that all fingers will be pointing towards him should the remainder of the season be one where the team fails to make the playoffs.

Team President Greg Miller son of the late owner Larry Miller , GM Kevin O’Connor and the front office have been reticent to offer up a public statement as the primary reason behind Sloan’s resignation and departure. But it’d appear that things weren’t as close as some might’ve been led to believe in terms of the team’s direction ,the relationship between the coach and several players on the team.

The NBA as I alluded to earlier has now become a players’ league where they can dictate whether or not a coach remains in his position even when the team itself is playing badly and it’s solely their fault. The coach will always be the first and last port of call when a team is having problems on and off the field . Players now within the league are rarely held accountable when they’re playing badly as the focus reverts back to the coach and his staff. And that’s even in spite of the problems we’re now seeing with teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers , Minnesota Timberwolves , Washington Wizards led by Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis and Flip Saunders respectively . It’s pretty safe to say that quite possibly one of those coaches may well be a coaching casualty by the season’s end if not before ? General managers and owners hire a coach with the goal of winning the NBA title . All else is merely secondary in nature in the realms of the NBA.

It’ll be interesting to see what the ramifications will be when the story breaks and how it is viewed by the fans and the NBA writers around the league. This much I do know ESPN and TNT will devote a great deal of time to the story and seeking to analyze everything that went into the decision in the wake of Jerry Sloan’s abrupt resignation from an organization where he spent close to twenty five years of his esteemed career. Sadly , Sloan may well go down as the best coach never to win an NBA title in spite of his impressive NBA resume’ . But that’s simply what the NBA and in fact major as well as collegiate sports is now all about ……….‘ it’s win now at almost any cost’ and if the coach’s head just happens to be served up on the proverbial platter as the price of failure then so be it !

Ty Corbin is now entrusted with the task of having to resurrect the fortunes of this team and it will be extremely interesting to see how he relates to Deron Williams , Paul Millsap and the core group of players on the roster . From my own perspective I feel that even if Corbin has been given this position on an interim basis with a view to securing it long term it could well come down as to how well he’s able to guide this team and whether or not Deron Williams buys into to what he’s selling. The player can become a free agent at the end of this season and the organization will do their utmost to retain the player. Because there’s the likelihood that he may well choose to leave for greener pastures if the team isn’t able to show any overall improvement over the remainder of the season

One of the real problems the Utah Jazz faces as a NBA franchise is the very fact that it has never been viewed as one of the more appealing destinations around the league for a free agent to enhance their NBA career. And as tenured and esteemed a career as was had by Jeff Hornacek , Stockton and Malone the fact that they were never able to win an NBA title although having made two Finals’ appearances speaks volumes as to what Sloan and the trio were able to achieve over the course of the Jazz’s history .

As I said earlier Sloan’s departure did come as a surprise but the mere fact that it was so abrupt has me thinking what other coaches could this type of situation befall within the NBA much less the NFL or MLB ? We saw how acrimonious Jeff Fisher’s fall from grace was with the Tennessee Titans . I certainly hope that the fans and in particular the Jazz ownership are appreciative of all that he’s done for the franchise because were it not for Jerry Sloan I doubt we’d discussing anything remotely suggesting that the Utah Jazz was in fact an NBA franchise.

What thoughts if any do you have concerning Jerry Sloan’s resignation and do you feel that it was indeed time for him to walk away from the game ? Any thoughts that you may well have on the matter simply leave a comment as to your thoughts. Thanks as always for the continued support as it has always been gratefully appreciated !

Telling Tall Tales In The World of Basketball ………

Telling   Tall  Tales     In   The  World  of  Basketball

OK  so  what  is  that  makes  Stephon  Marbury feel that   he’s  still   relevant in  the   sport  of  basketball ?  It’s  not  as if  his career  was  a storied one  to  begin  with.  Having   played  alongside  future  Hall  of Famers  Jason  Kidd  and  Steve  Nash the  player  who  recently   “tweeted”  that  he’d   like  to  see   the now retired  Allen   Iverson  return  to  the  court  to  join  and  play  alongside him  in  China  .   Now   pardon  me  for  saying this  but what have  the  Chinese done  deserve such  a  fate  ?  Marbury’s NBA __ career  hasn’t  been  a   storied  one  and  it   failed  to  live  up  to  the  hype of the  ‘once prodigious’  blacktop  star.

For  Iverson  to  even  consider  returning  the   court   much  less   playing  in  China  given  the mayhem  in  his  personal  life would   leave  a  great  deal  to  be   desired.  In  the   midst  of  an  acrimonious  separation  from  his estranged wife.  The   player has  a  great   deal  on  his   plate to  deal  with  much  less  forming  something  of  an   intriguing duo of  he  and  Marbury  playing  professionally   in  China.  If  there’s  a  possibility  I’d   like to see   Iverson remain retired and   Marbury  well  let’s   just  say  should  he  return   to  play  professionally  in China then  hopefully   he’s assigned  to  a  team   in   outer  Mongolia or another remote Chinese province !

Is  there  a   chance  that  the   triumph  of   team  USA  in  the  FIBA   world  championships will  be truly  appreciated  ? What  was  achieved  by  coach   Mike  Krzyzewski  and  his  staff  I for  one don’t  believe can be quantified and  appreciated. With   only  Chauncey  Billups  and  Lamar Odom  on  this national squad  with  previous  international  experience. The team led by  Kevin Durant went to  Istanbul Turkey  and   decisively  won  the   world  championships. Though  they  might’ve   been  favored   one    doubts  that  the  team  would   go  unbeaten  throughout the  tournament and   beat  the   host  nation  with   ease.    In  defeating   Turkey   team  USA won  the   world  championship  for  the  first  time  since 1994 .

USA  Basketball once  again can  consider itself  atop of the  basketball  world  internationally.  And  while  no one  can  deny  the  truly  astonishing  feat of  the  team  and the  praise   heaped upon   tournament MVP Durant . One   can’t  but ask  what   now  happens  in  the run-up  to  the  Olympic  Games  in   London  , 2012 ?  Major  stars   such as Dywane Wade  , __ LeBron  James Carmelo  Anthony  and  Chris  Bosh  were  not  participants   in   Ankara.  And it  has to be  said  that   the  players  mentioned  will  be   looking to  be   willing  participants  on  the  team  that   is  an  automatic   qualifier  for  the London   games.   Now  one   might look at  this venially,  with the  fact  that   such  major  stars  as   Wade  and   James   will   no   doubt   seen  as  automatic  choices  for  the  team   which  will  once   again  be  coached  by  Krzyzewski  in what  will be   his  last  international   tournament  as  a  coach.   In  high  anticipation  of  this    I’ve   no  doubt  that   USA   Director  of  Basketball Operations Jerry Colangelo  will  consult  with his much revered  coach   as  to  what   will  be  in   the  organization’s  best   interests  as  it  relates  to  the   tournament But   given  what   we  saw  from  these   players   who  in  many  respects   really dropped themselves from  consideration from  the  world  championship merely to pursue  the  multi-million   dollar contracts  of the  NBA  .   I’ve    got to  ask    will  it  be   fair  to  the   younger   players   who   played  with  passion  and   pride   for  their   country     to be quite possibly left  off the   team  for the  Olympics ?

And  the NBA  itself  isn’t without   discord  at  present   as the  league   hierarchy   headed   by   David  Stern  and  NBPA   Executive  Director  Billy Hunter are till  trying to  hammer  out a   comprehensive  collective   bargaining  agreement  in order to avoid  what   would  be a  disastrous  labor  dispute should  that  scenario  arise. NBA  Commissioner  Stern  has  been  reticent  to  discuss in public   not  only  how  the   talks are  progressing .  Hunter  for his  part   has   stated  that   he’s willing to  work  in  conjunction  with  the   commissioner  but  only  under the  terms  dictated by  his members. On  the  face  of this is simply about  two groups  of   multi-millionaires  not
wanting to  give  any   leeway    image   wise  by appearing to look  weak
.

Given the  weak economy and the   fact  that a   number   of  NBA  teams  aren’t  exactly in  a   healthy   financial state.  One  could ask  the question  what  is  it  that   Stern and the  team owners have to hide ? Stern’s   idiotic  argument that  the   $250 million  loaned  to fifteen teams in 2009 in order curtail the =woes  of those teams shows that for all  of the grandiose statements made by the commissioner, all is not as it appears. But you’d be hard pressed to hear the majority of owners admit to the fact that their financial woes are  as acute as we know them to be. The  league  itself  lost in excess of $400 million  in  2009 and is forecast to lose in excess  of $500 millionor the 2010-11 season.Half a billion dollars in losses in an industry where revenues are in excess of  $ 5 billion has to be  a worrying picture for the NBA owners .

The the players’ union would like or us  to  believe  that  the owners have something to  hide and  aren’t  being  entirely   honest  as  to   their  revenue  streams  and  profits. And given that  the  league  is  a   private  enterprise  and  that  their   books   have   never   been  opened  for public scrutiny   it’s   hard  to  know where   the   truth  begins   and  where   false claims  come  into  play.

With  the   upcoming  season but  a  few  months  away   it  remains  to  be   seen  what scenarios  will   arise  in  the  NBA.  Quite   possibly  before  the  season   commences   we  could  well  see  a major  trade as  rumors  were  rife  that the Denver Nuggets were   prepared  to   trade  Carmelo Anthony  in  exchange for the  Chicago Bulls’  center  Joakim  Noah.    That   move   would  bring   immediate   dividends for  the  Bulls   should  the  trade  take   place  and   would  make the  team a    serious  contender  within  the  Eastern Conference  alongside the  Miami Heat Orlando  Magic  and  Boston Celtics.  Anything  that  would make the conference  all  the  more  intriguing rather  than  being  seen  as  a  coronation  in  waiting  for  the  Miami  Heat.

Nuggets focusing on Carmelo Anthony

DENVER — Now that the Denver Nuggets have their management team in place, they’re developing a strategy to keep All-Star Carmelo Anthony in powder blue and gold.

At his introductory news conference Tuesday, Masai Ujiri, the team’s new vice president of basketball operations, said he’s been in contact with Anthony and will meet with him soon.

The Nuggets offered Anthony a three-year, $65 million extension through 2014, but if he rejects it, the team will have to consider trading the forward who has guided them to seven straight playoff berths.

“I think I’m going to convince him to be a Nugget,” Ujiri said, smiling. “No, I don’t know, I can’t make a judgment on that. Like I said, it’s a process and until he tells me that … we want him back, the city wants him back, ownership wants him back.”

There have been hints that Anthony might be thinking about moving on: his mansion in the Denver area is on the market and at his New York wedding to TV personality LaLa Vazquez this summer, there was that now famous toast by New Orleans point guard Chris Paul about reuniting with Melo in Gotham to form a super-team along with Amare Stoudemire to counter the Miami Heat’s terrific trio.

Anthony has never come out and said he wanted to be traded, however.

At his basketball camp this summer, Anthony dismissed all the speculation of his impending departure from Denver: “I’ve been hearing that for five years. I’m a Denver Nugget. I’m here, I’m with the Nuggets. I don’t become a free agent until next year, if I decide not to take that extension.”

He said then that he was just taking his time making a decision.

Is There A Nigger Around With Some Common Sense Please ?

Is There A Nigger Around With Some Common Sense Please ?

Well the fallout from the LeBron James episode has created some seismic shifts but at the same time some respected African Americans have come to the fore making the most asinine of suggestions. Now don’t get me wrong in their chosen professions I’ve no doubt that they’re well respected. But when I here the likes of Jesse Jackson calling an NBA owner , a person with a slave owner’s mentality then I for one have to question Jackson’s mendacity and intelligence ! This being the very same person , who while in New York chose to disparage the Jewish community and then had the temerity to act as if he’d done nothing wrong. Now we have respected journalist and ESPN show host Michael Wilbon coming out in support of Jackson . Now had this been Jason Whitlock making that statement in support of Jackson then I’d have thought nothing of it. But given that , to my mind Wilbon being a highly respected sport’s journalist , I do believe that he of all people ought to have known better.

Now in this day and age where there are very few African American males where the young men of that race can look up to and say that’s a proud example of a man let alone an African American man. We’re now bereft of leaders and men who can actually sustain an eloquent conversation much less talk about a subject that might have a bearing on a young person’s life.

Jesse Jackson: Spewing hate and his own brand of racism

No matter how we try to downplay it, cover it up, smooth it over or seek to put it in the context of what hopefully will one day be ancient history, there is simply no denying a tragic fact.

We are a civilization that uses racial differences as a weapon.

American sport and our very history is riddled with examples, most of which have become the core of our sensitivity to race and the need to treat everyone equally.

Jackie Robinson endured torrents of verbal rage and emerged an early champion of civil rights. Jack Johnson refused to “know his place” as a black man and was later jailed for preferring white female partners. His pardon waited almost a century. Countless athletes from varied walks of racial life can still remember being treated to their own water fountain, dining counter or rest room.

We are certainly not alone in fighting these stigmas. Players of color are routinely mocked with monkey chants in European soccer. One star player made no attempt to hide his use of the Nazi salute to honor his despicable brethren in the stands. A former star rugby player and current broadcaster speaks to a team and allegedly calls an opposing player a “black c***”.

Despite all this, people of intelligence, honor, wisdom and patience soldier on to stem this fetid tide of racial bile. Secure in the knowledge these are the most useful weapons one can use in fighting what remains a raging battle not only on our fields of play, but certainly in our daily existence as well.

But then, just when you think a time has come for an athlete to be judged on the merits what was earned working in that uniform instead of the skin shade underneath it, comes the one person, the one comment, the one action, that restarts the pinwheel of hate, misunderstanding, and disgusting racial examples that we are better off diligently erasing from our memory.

Jesse Jackson has in one verbal swoop inundated the fires of racism with more than enough fuel to reignite the mud-dwelling mores of those who revel in continually joking and mocking the tragic and insulting slavery of African-Americans.

“His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality,” Jackson said in a statement released Sunday responding to the angry post-Lebron signing statements from Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. “(He) sees LeBron as a runaway slave.”

No one will argue, at least successfully, that Gilbert didn’t shoot his mouth off and take a chunk of foot with the blast. Following James’ departure, Gilbert became the shining example of not merely being a boorish sports baron, but of mixing in a heavy dose of petulant adolescent child to create a sad and, at the same time, laughable mutation.

Gilbert roared that James was a coward for leaving Cleveland. He quit during a handful of Cavs playoff games. And compared the holding of James accountable for his actions to that of dealing with a spoiled child. And even while being fined $100,000 by the NBA for his words, he remains adamant there was no racial connection whatsoever.

Emotional? Certainly. Insulting? Not in the least when players such as James have dealt with much worse on a nightly basis during an 82 game season. Words that mask racism? Go ahead and read them for yourself. I’ll dare you to find something even remotely connected.

But racist? Taking race into consideration as a basis for dropping the hometown hammer on this once-favored son? Considering James little more than an indentured servant who should be using a scythe to clear fields when he’s not nailing double-doubles? And taking to task the very sports league that has become the model for race relations?

While I was taught at a very young age to never use this word in describing anyone, there is no better fit for anyone making this connection.

Let me see, Jackson’s claim to fame a follower of the late Dr Martin Luther King and whose claim that he was at his side when he was shot has since been found groundless and false. He’d met with him on that fateful day but as to him being at his side ….. that’s simply Jesse’s idea of being economical with the truth. This is also the same man also disparaged the current sitting President by using a profanity whilst on camera and we’re meant to take his claim seriously concerning his statement concerning Cleveland Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert ? Is it any wonder that young African Americans can’t identify with a generation of leaders from yesteryear who are now bereft of intelligence as they are to their ongoing reason to be a part of a legitimate political debate ? Can someone answer me this but when was the last time Jesse Jackson actually had something of relevance to say on any given subject ? Much like certain members of Congress , he’s about as useful as fecal matter would be on the sole of someone’s shoes.

Now as to the situation of James and his move from Cleveland to the wiles of Miami and the Miami Heat . Admittedly it was a surprise that he moved to the Heat when every indication might be that he would either remain with the Cavaliers or quite possibly go to the Chicago Bulls . That asides the premise I see behind the move is borne out by the fact that the Cavaliers’ management and front office were complacent but above all naïve to think that their most prized asset would remain with an organization whose idea of improving its talent was to obtain an aging Shaquille O’Neal and get a player in Antawn Jamison who shows flashes of brilliance about as often as Lindsay Lohan has been known to have a hit movie. Come to think of what was the last time Lohan had a “hit movie” and what was it ? Girl has a “rack” though, even if she’s supposedly batting for the other side .

Now come full circle and we’re now to think that Gilbert despite his child like rants against his former employee isn’t without fault ? He’s failed to look at himself in the mirror and ask himself the question what could I have done better in order to have made this situation work ? Now he’s whining like someone who has stolen something of value from him when he in the first place hadn’t made sure that the asset was secure. Somehow if this is a guy who believes that his NBA franchise will win a title before the present incumbent Heat organization does. Then for all sense and purpose I fully hope that he’s made to eat his words ! Though I’m in no way a Heat fan , I do feel that Gilbert has made a complete ass of himself and placed the Cavaliers’ franchise in almost impossible position when it now comes to acquiring players in the future. Players will see his actions and then ask themselves ….. ” is this the sort of guy I’d want to play or even work for” ? And the answer may well be a resounding …..”no” .

An opportunist like Jackson will now look for the next photo op and fire whereby he can add more fuel to it by making another asinine statement . Thankfully, on the international front he’s about as well known as “Joe The Plumber” whose brief fifteen minutes of fame were filled with about as much well meaning sound bytes as a speech by Sarah Palin on the US economy. Either way one can be thankful that Jackson is about as reliable as a ground hog on Ground Hog Day. He pops his head up for the season then disappears back into obscurity . Unfortunately , far too often it’s the times when he does pop his head up for all of the wrong damn reasons , that’s when the public sits up and takes note of the ridiculous things that he has to say. None more so than at present as it now becomes a water cooler topic of discussion. And needless to say this very statement will be discussed , analyzed and then have supporters on both sides of the argument. And the chances are that divide will be drawn along racial lines. Well just to dispel that notion as here’s one nigger who’s not buying into the bullshit that Jesse is now espousing. Let’s just say that Jesse Jackson is about as relevant to my way of life as fecal matter would be on the sole of my shoe. In other words I’ll just scrape it off and be on my merry way. Like I said when was the last time the man had anything of relevance to say on any meaningful subject that would be of impact on our way of life ?
